  1. I think Ron Brown is probably a pretty cool guy. I saw him taking his daughter to the movies a while back on a weekday afternoon and he was wearing husker pajama pants. I will admit that I giggled. I've seen him speak a couple of times and the only thing that turned me off was that once, while speaking to a bunch of undergrads at a function in the middle of the campus, he spend most of the time yelling about how homosexuality is a sin. Now, I love Jesus and I also believe it's a sin, but it was like he was doing it to be a sensationalist, to stir things up. I'm not sure if it was really in the best interest of anyone around. It reminded me of those guys who come to campus and yell at us about how we are all going to hell. If Ron Brown reminds me more of "cross guy" (not Jesus silly, the guy who stands by the Grande theatre) than Jesus than I have a problem with it. Really though, that is probably me overanalyzing and being too sensitive.
  2. I would have one of those guns that when you pull the trigger, a little flag comes out that says "bang".
  3. Hahahaha! This thread. Is. Ridiculous. Seriously though, Snooki is the new Paris Hilton. Lots of people watch her and the rest of that despicable crew for the same reason we watch Trading Spouses and that show about midget bakers. Not because we want to be them when we grow up, but because it's fun to snoop in on other people's weirdo lives. The other day I was at a furniture store and noticed that they now make recliners that are twice as wide because regular lazy boys just aren't big enough to support our gigantic asses as we watch the useless entertainment of the day (be it Jersey Shore, Baseball, Nascar, or my favorite-Say Yes to the Dress). All argument about baseball and Jersey Shore and The Situation and "College Degrees" aside, I believe I speak for us all when I say God Bless America.
  4. This is a likely root cause and I'm sure there are others. If our society does not value it, then it has little worth. I understand this is a harsh statement, but it is true. We can't continue to subsidize things that our society doesn't value. Whether I care for the arts is irrelevant. As someone who has never played an instrument, I have a surprisingly difficult time when I read that a school/district is cutting a music program. The point of my rant is that this is yet another 'smoke screen'. We get so caught in the politics that we so easily settle on the easy solution. Blame Perlman, Blame UNL, state legislature, blame whoever may seem convenient. As sorry as it is, this program is being cut for a reason. Cina...this is just a microcosm of our society. I'm not attempting to call you out. I'm sure it is a difficult situation and I wish you the best of luck. At some point(maybe) we will decide that we can't keep pumping money into loser programs(entitlement) because it makes people feel good. I'm like all the talking heads out there though....I don't have a solution. Thanks for the reply. I think you are right, and as an advocate of the arts it is my job to argue the point that the arts make an important difference in our society. Art teachers are already acting as advocates to school boards across the country who are cutting art from their curricula, and this is just an extension of that fight. You are in plentiful company believing the arts are cut for a reason, and it is our job to speak out saying that this reason is insufficient, and to make known the benefits of saving it. Is it political? Yes. But it's the kind of lobbying that goes on from day to day and the kind that is stirred up whenever an administrative body is forced to make cuts. The arts are not valued in our society, our argument is that the arts do hold tremendous value for our society and that it is overlooked. I don't expect agreement on this point, I'm just explaining that we're not complaining instead of taking action. This is the action we are taking-to get the word out there, to increase society's view of the arts in terms of importance.
  5. I'm not looking to get into a huge debate tonight, but I'll say this. I think the problem is actually deeper than just "recruiting more people for my program". The problem is that this society doesn't value arts in schools as highly as math and science. I am actually in the largest class of future art educators that UNL has ever had go through the program. But society doesn't value art, schools don't value art or art teachers, the university in turn doesn't value art teachers enough to keep the program when push comes to shove. I'm not saying that Perlman doesn't value the arts, I'm saying he had to make cuts where it would effect the least people, and since art ed is a much smaller program (not because we're not "recruiting" but because of the long long string of causal relationships listed above) it made sense for him to cut it. Much like the college of Fine Arts is cutting the Organ endorsement. It doesn't effect as many people. The fact is, none of the disciplines of endorsements in the College of Education and Human Sciences "bring in revenue" through grants on the scale of the chemistry and engineering colleges. It's not a matter of Art K-12 not pulling it's own weight, it's a matter of cutting spending while making the least amount of ripples in the pond. I'm not saying we shouldn't cut spending, that's not what I'm saying at all. But as a future art teacher, it is my job to advocate for the arts in our schools. This is just one such instance in which it is imperative to me and my classmates that we make known that someone is advocating for the art ed program. Several someones, in fact. Are there other art education programs out there? Most certainly. But I am a student of the University of Nebraska, and as a student and a prospective art teacher, it's my job to be a voice that speaks up in support of Art Education. All we are trying to do is be a voice for Art Education in the University. We're trying to make ourselves known and to raise awareness of the importance of Art K-12. Because sometimes you have to advocate for something, sometimes "sucking it up" is cowardice and laziness. I think the chance for the Art K-12 program to be retained is very, very, very small. I think that cuts are ineviteable and I welcome them. However it would be wrong for me to believe so strongly that the arts DO matter in our schools and then to just sit idly by while the University eliminates the program that has been training art teachers. I'm like the Lorax, kind of. And I'm going to bed.
  6. We were pretty well prepared to, but couldn't get enough people in agreement. Our main goal is to make as many people aware of the situation as possible. We're working on creating an art installation (we are artists after all) on the streets of downtown Lincoln, writing arguments for the importance of art ed, getting statements from faculty and trying to contact local news outlets. Several of us were ready to charge down over the stadium, but others were of the opinion that the spring game would be populated by out-of-towners who wouldn't really care about the UNL budget cuts :/ The goings on of the state's flagship institution should be of concern to all of the state's residents, at least I would think so. Also, out-of-towners can provide a signature . I just think the more awareness that you can drum up in a short period of time, the more your cause will benefit. Then again, it is pretty easy for me to make suggestions from a thousand miles away! I completely agree! If I had a ticket to the spring game I'd be drummin' up support while I was there. We almost had an unnamed someone who may or may not frequent the Lil' Red costume to hold a sign as well

  8. From what I've been able to ascertain, the state legislature is putting pressure on Perlman to cut costs significantly, though as of now there isn't anything official from the state side of things. I'm not going to hold out hope that it's a political ploy; from all I've heard from faculty the general feeling is that this news was not announced until so late in the semester because waiting until now makes it more difficult for organized opposition of it. That's speculation though, I hope the public does cry out enough that the legislature takes note, though the fact that they haven't officially cut anything yet makes me wonder why Perlman would pull such a stunt. My teaching methods class was in an uproar today, and we were going to have petitions and signs for the spring game but decided we needed more time to organize
  9. Yup. I'm at UNL minoring in Secondary Art Education (one of the programs that has just been eliminated). As I am accepted into the teacher's college I'll be allowed to finish out my degree at UNL. However I have friends who were one semester behind me who are now given the options of choosing a different profession or transferring to a different university. Obviously we're pretty upset about this, and feel ourselves in the position of advocates for the art education program at UNL. Supposedly the budget won't be approved until June (although I'm pretty sure Perlman and the regents have already made up their minds) and we're going to be rallying as much support as we can for keeping the program. Although there's very little hope for saving it, if anyone would like to help by writing Harvey Perlman a nice e-mail it would be appreciated!

    Iowa game

Ahhh, I love the internet. Husker or Hawkeye, on the internet anyone can act like a petulant child and still sleep soundly at night. You know what annoys me? Referring to the Big 10 as the "B1G" online. I know it's the new logo, but it just doesn't work in bookman, or times, or whatever font this is. I always just read it as "The Big" and that sounds weird. That being said, I will admit to having a general dislike for Iowa. Not really the team, just..87% of people I've met from Iowa. Also, 100% of Iowa fans that I've met (face to face that is, there seem to be some pretty upstanding Iowegians on this board.) The only thing that really annoys me is the intense, passionate love for the "B1G" that Iowa fans seem to have. It's like they can't really be proud of their own team's record on a year to year basis, so they fall back on the respectability of the conference. I know I shouldn't complain, because we're in the Big Ten now and it's a great conference..I just feel that pride Iowa has in the Big Ten, that burning pride..I just don't want to fuel that pride. I just want to irrationally, bitterly cut down that pride and have no part in it, simply because they're Iowa. Iowa, those evil evil Iowegians with their evil team and their evil colors and their evil..evil.. ... ...evilness. But seriously, Iowa is fine. They bug me a little, like an annoying sibling. When we play them we might lose (I don't expect us to but I didn't expect us to lose to Iowa State in '09 either), and if we do I'm sure I'll have some excuse to fall back on (Those darn injuries! Those incorrigible refs!) just like they will. Rivalry? Maybe, maybe not. Irrational? Totally. Expected in a football forum? Yup. Going to stop me from making pointless entries? Not on your life.
  11. That's a negative, ghostrider. Also I should add that not all girls attempt to "change" guys. I never want to be one of those girls. As much as I've wanted to change a guy, I recognize utter futility when I see it. Although it seems the common dominator in this thread is guys who have had girls try and change them, so it seems to be an epidemic stretching back since the days of Yore. ***SNIP*** But the first time he leaves the toilet seat up at night... I've never understood what the big deal is there. Guys don't seem to be annoyed with having to put it up. Are there really girls out there who get mad about this?!

I can't speak for all of us (although I've done my fair share of it here!) but girls, it seems, want what everyone truly wants: someone who will see them for who they really are and love them anyway.
  13. I hope that bolded part wasn't for me. I definitely don't need anyone to cook for me Not meant for anyone in particular, just a general statement
  14. I definitely don't see this as a battle of the sexes (not exactly even numbers for a battle. More like a woman massacre? Just kidding! ) It's kind of a fun conversation, I think. From what you've said of your ex, makes your attitude completely justifiable. Unfortunately there are people on both ends of the gene pool who are in the business of ripping people's hearts out and throwing them in wood chippers. Or at the very least turning out to be a huge waste of time, devotion, and money. Hopefully someday you'll meet someone who will outlive all (well, okay, SOME) of those steriotypes. Until then, enjoy being able to devote that extra time to your son, right? Personally, I grew up around a lot of guys in my family and they're all amazing men, which sets my standards pretty high for any man I plan to date. That list is kinda true. Some woman steriotypes are there because they have some truth to them. We do like to talk about stuff, we are more emotionally centered than men, we do like to see the man as a protector and responsible provider (though the basics of feministic doctrine would argue that this isn't true). Need I lay up before you the endless list of steriotypes about men? Some of those stem from truth too, but does every one of them define you to a T? Nope.
  15. The whole "being an a-hole" thing might get you a girl, but I'm pretty sure you won't keep them that way. Trust me. I just got out of a relationship with an a-hole. One reason I ended it was because it was either end it or try to change the guy. And I don't want to be one of those girls you guys are talking about, haha! As far as I can tell, all guys are at least slightly assholish; all the men I know are. Girls should for sure be able to put up with assholery to a certain extent. I knew when I signed up for this board that I'd be a minority and since I spend most of my time around dudes I'm used to it. I gotta say though; any chick that wants to change you isn't the right one for you, any dude who just wants a chick to bang and to cook for him can hardly be called a "man". Act like a boy and you're gonna attract girls. Act like a man and you're gonna attract women. But anyway yeah. Chicks are totally bogus. Amiright?
  16. Sounds like one of the guys she was dating when I found out we were getting divorced. Although I have no idea what you mean by CoD..Chemical Oxygen Demand? Back when I still lived in Lincoln, I used to test some of the groundwater for that. And now I'm sitting at my 'puter in my underbritches two hours before I have to wake up and go to work. That sounds like an opening act for The New York Dolls. I'm pretty sure I saw them at the Zoo bar the other night Yeah, Call of Duty..I've played my fair share so I'm not one of those girls who complains (actually I spend most of my time playing online games these days which is a pretty good indication I don't have ANY guy to complain about.) Just thought I should clear that up. Just because I understand why girls do that doesn't mean I think it's reasonable.
  17. Uh, I think that girls want a funny guy because a good sense of humor is usually a good sign that the dude isn't a complete douche with no personality. As for girls wanting to change a guy, I'd say that usually once a girl is dating a guy and it's starting to go long-term, suddenly she doesn't want a guy who sits around in his underwear all day and plays CoD..she wants a guy who shows signs of being a responsible provider. I'm not saying it's not possible to be both, but after a while a girl stops looking at a guy as a "cute/funny boy" and starts seeing them as "potential husband?!??!???" which is usually when she wants you to get off the couch and open a savings account and stuff. Is it wrong or unfair of her to expect you to morph into Bob McResponsibility when you won her over by making fart noises with your armpit? Probably. But it happens. Sincerely, A girl.
  18. Hmm. You know, I've been thinking about this lately. I mean, I don't make very much money as it is, and my campus job isn't open during the holidays so I don't even get a paycheck around Christmas. Not to mention that I won't be done studying for finals until tomorrow, leaving me..what..9 "shopping days" before Christmas? When I think about stuff like that I completely agree with you. Presents are dumb; I don't need 'em. Usually I'm spending half of my time racking my brain trying to think of something..ANYTHING I could buy for my dad that wouldn't be a complete waste of space in his garage/closet/car. The man has everything. But if I don't find one more thing he might possibly use, well damn. I must be a crappy daughter, right? There are parts of Christmas that I do love, however. And those are mostly hallmark-card-y, Charles Dickens-y things like ringing bells for the Salvation Army, singing in the Christmas choir and finally getting to see the fam. Funny how none of these things cost money. It's a hard pill to swallow that love can't be expressed through a cordless drill..well, I mean, it CAN..but it can also be expressed just as easily through, I dunno..words. Actions. Free stuff. I'm totally with ya on taking the giant economical strain and general stress out of Christmas, now we just gotta figure out how to do it...
  19. stop being nice! But Santa's watching!
  20. Well THIS is a fun thread already I dunno, I mean it doesn't seem unreasonable for me that people on a Husker message board would complain a little about a sports show being disparaging towards their coach..it's not like we're going to go burn down their sound studio (or are we? Anyone free Thursday night?) It's just a common discussion point. The guys are on the radio. They're gonna catch it from SOMEONE no matter what they say. Schick could make a comment about how awesome babies are and somewhere, a crazy baby-hatin' maniac is going to complain on his baby-hating message board about how much Schick seems to have a pro-baby bias. Yeah, some people take what those guys say WAY too seriously, but they're on the radio so people will listen, and when people listen they're bound to form opinions. Message boards are a great way to voice them to people. So instead of complaining about complaining, I'm going to go ahead and say welcome to the boards
  21. I can see it now, Bo and Carl can cut a Christmas album, with the Pelini version of some of your favorites: "Rudolf the big-nosed reindeer" and "The Holly and the &$#!&*@ Ivy" Seriously though, It is nice to see that Bo has a gooey inside. It's probably made of gum.
  22. Definitely dead week, a.k.a. "work until you're dead" week for us art majors. No finals, just lots and lots and lots of projects.. I've definitely had a test before during dead week, so I think it's "dead week" in theory only, not enforced overmuch. This tweet seems bogus. I'm gonna start a twitter account and randomly post things about players, just to see which boards momentarily implode. This just in! Brandon Kinnie fell in a bottomless pit. #wowzers #Ilikeanicepairofslacks
  23. If I were T.O. I would have a response like this typed up and sitting on my desktop ready to be copy-pasted to anyone of the numerous "Fire watson" e-mails I received every day.
