  1. The Miami-NU game was 33-10 with 11 minutes left in the game. It could have/should have been even more than that but Kaaya threw a boneheaded INT in the end zone at the beginning of the 4th quarter. By all intents and purposes, it was a blowout. I give credit to NU for playing hard, and making a miraculous comeback to send it to OT. But, it shouldn't have even gotten to OT. Miami's idiocracy, with a coach who would be fired a month later, was the reason NU got back in the game.
  2. This. He is an average back. NU is used to having superior/special running backs, going back deep in history. It's frustrating that the coaches didn't do a better job of getting other backs REGULARLY involved in the running game. Joe Ganz was very critical of the coaching staff this week for not creating ways to use guys like Wilbon and Taylor in the running game. The coaches are paid a lot of money to figure those things out, and they didn't get it done. I appreciate Ganz' perspective because really this has been the story all year - not getting guys involved, particularly in the run game. But, I disagree that this falls back on guys like Taylor and Wilbon seeing touches. Wilbon has played in four games this season and if Taylor has played I don't readily remember it. What about Jano and Ozigbo? Those guys have have a 6.5 and 7.2 YPC average, respectively. The team's recipe for success this year has been when they've run the football well and limited TA to about 30 passes. Yeah, and Ozigbo should have gotten more touches than he did. He was on a milk carton for a number of games after seeing extensive action in the Illinois game. I agree that that was the recipe for success, but the coaches didn't stick to that recipe for a number of the games.
  3. And by Lucky's senior season, the coaches realized that Roy Helu was a better running back and Helu was getting the majority of the carries by the end of 2008.

  5. I think that UCLA will have no problem piling up points against NU's D. I think Rosen picks Banker's D apart. The only way NU keeps it close is if the offense keeps scoring with them, like NU did against Michigan State. There's no basis for thinking we'll get blown out. Thinking we'll lose, yes. Right. No basis whatsoever to think the Huskers will get blown out. Just like back in August when there was no basis whatsoever to think the Huskers would have a losing season. How do you figure? We hadn't played a game yet with the new staff. We haven't been blown out this year. We could get blown out by UCLA but nothing that has happened this season indicates that will happen. The Miami game was a blowout for 3 quarters, and then they went brain dead, and let NU back in it. Purdue was also a blowout, until NU put up some late points in the 4th quarter. It's a fallacy to say that NU wasn't blown out in any games this year.
  6. Here is a Denver Post article about the McCaffrey's from 1999. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_29072213/broncos-ed-mccaffrey-wife-lisa-both-come-from-long-line-athletes Lisa McCaffrey's dad was a world-class sprinter in the 1950's and 1960's and won a silver medal in the 1960 Olympics. Needless to say, the McCaffrey kids have some amazing bloodlines.
  7. This is meaningless as he would have to sit out a transfer year. So Tommy would be gone before Allen would be eligible to play. Well thanks for pissing in my cheerios. Meany head. Then no, there is no reason to go after him if he has to sit for a year, by 2017 POB will be our starter if not sooner. I would welcome a transfer QB at NU, even if he has to sit out next year. POB looks to have plenty of ability, but I wouldn't put it all on his shoulders. I know Riley got to NU late in the recruiting process last year, but I think he missed the boat when he didn't bring in a QB in the 2015 class.
  8. Looks like he mainly has Big 12 schools in his list of schools that he's interested in.
  9. I don't think he has terrible vision. I think - especially early in the year - he was always trying to bounce it outside. Improved quite a bit on that as the year went on. His running in the Iowa game was awful. It was like he was seeking out the tackler. I was at the game which isn't the best place to see plays develop and the replays suck. And I haven't rewatched it. But six of his nine carries were up the middle against a pretty good run defense. That's not giving him a lot of chance to do anything. So Newby's six carries are at the 11:35, 12:05, 23:40, 56:50, 59:55, 1:01:50, 1:30:30, 1:34:20 and 1:41:35 marks of the following video. I guess you'll have to explain to me which runs he was "awful" on. I don't see any where he didn't get basically what he could have gotten on the given play. Ok, I went through those runs, and he may not have been "awful", but he really wasn't very good. Here is what I saw on each run. #1--not great blocking, but Newby still runs up against the back of the blocker. Shows a lack of patience, #2--good run, at getting what was there, but he missed a cut to the right where he could have make a very good gain. #3--decent run as he bounces it outside, but he allows the safety to make a 1-on-1 tackle in the open field. I know that the Iowa safety is really good, but sometimes the RB has to make a guy miss. Newby's strength is supposed to be in the open field, but he didn't show it there. #4--This is the play that was stuck in my mind when I said Newby had an "awful" game. There were a couple of lanes where Newby should have planted the right foot and gone upfield. This play had holes to get 5-7 yards. Newby tries to bounce it outside, comes to a stop at the 10, and allows the safety to make another 1-on-1 tackle. I was on Twitter during the game, and I saw a lot of "Newby again turns a 5-yard gain into a 2 yard gain" Tweets. #5--Play wasn't very well blocked, but Newby wasn't very decisive #6--This was a VERY GOOD run. He had an open hole at the beginning, and then made a strong, decisive cut to go upfield and make a good gain. #7--Ran straight forward into the pile. Wasn't much there overall though. #8--Not much there on the play #9--Got what he could on the play, when there wasn't much there. So, I was probably a little harsh in saying that he was "awful" against Iowa. Run #4 was the play that I always think about when I picture Newby. There were times where the o-line didn't make a hole against a good run defense. Newby made a couple good plays, but he also could have gotten more out of plays if he breaks a tackle or is more decisive in his running. I know that Newby is facing good defensive talent in the Big 10, but if he is supposed to be an elite RB, he needs to get better breaking tackles, making decisive cuts, and making defenders miss in the open field.

  11. Was wondering the same thing when I saw that. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. He has been here 4 years, will probably get his degree this December. Yes, he could probably improve his stock, but he could also be ready to end his college career. He has had injury problems at times, so he could be thinking "if I am gonna be injured, I might as well do it on a NFL roster."
  12. Newby consistently turns 5-6 yard gains into 2 yard gains. The guy just won't hit the hole hard and take the yardage that is available to him. That's my biggest complaint of him.
  13. That is what bothers me the most. I think we are getting very little bang for the buck with him. How is he as a recruiter? Was going to bring this up. He appears to basically be a non-factor in recruiting - other than recruiting kickers, punters and long-snappers. Kickers are people too but that means he's probably only recruiting one guy per year (on average). Can't remember which prominent new-hire head coach said this in the last week but he said he hires an OC, a DC and an OL coach. For the rest of the assistants, if you can't recruit, you don't work for him. Seems like a pretty good strategy to me. That was Will Muschamp, who just got hired at South Carolina.
  14. Maybe the Huskers Authentic store had a bunch of leftover gear after the season. Might be a nice gesture/PR move to get the guys in the league some gear?? I'm sure it's that too. It's probably a bunch of leftover practice gear that the players didn't grab.

  18. I don't have a link for a podcast yet, but Mike'l Severe's The Bottom Line radio show is having a round table discussion on NU football. The panel includes Joe Ganz, Sam McKewon, Dirk Chatelain, and Jon Nyatawa. I think that's a pretty fair group of observers on the season, and they give their thoughts on the future. It's been a very good listen so far.
  19. NUance, you are missing the point of last minute TD's, when down by 3 TD's or more. A last minute scoring drive in a close game is a lot different than a last minute drive in garbage time.
  20. Didn't Callahan V.1 show that a pass happy, West coast style offense not fit I Lincoln? Looks like Callahan V.2 is doubling down on the stupid. It wasn't Callahan's offense that got him fired. One of the great fallacies is that Callahan ran an effective offense. More times than not, it was offensive failures that led to defensive blow ups. Sound familiar? Look at the Purdue game this year. Do you carry a little red mao book too? Go back and look at the stats from the Callahan years and early Bo years. It was the defense stupid.... Incorrect. Everything was wrong with Callahan V.1. Remember USC? CM is 100% correct. It's funny how those that militantly defend Callahan V.2 also seem to wax nostalgic about Billy C.V.1. Guess you arent interested in facts. shrugs. All you have to do is look. Callahan's offense was non-existent against anyone with a pulse. All you have to do is look. 1/8 of the points his offense scored in '07 were in the last five minutes of games where he was behind by three TDs or more. I remember pro-Callahan message board posters defiantly defending Callahan and his offense. The biggest thing they kept on saying was "There is no garbage time!!!"
  21. And bring in his "throw it all over the yard, PAC 12 basketball offense"???? This is freaking hilarious........ People here bitch about throwing it to much and you want the Frost offense????? Of course it is Frost, so he will do no wrong. LOL!!!!I'm assuming that since Frost is actually familiar with our program, he would formulate an offense to be successful here. I'd bet that he would call plays to the strengths of his players, something that the current staff lied about doing. You assume a lot, most of it wrong. Coaches run what they know! Frost is going to run his Oregon offense in Florida and should he come here in the distant future, he is not going to run an offense he has NEVER coached. He would bring an offense you claim to despise (Chuckle) Dream on Dream Weaver...... You mean his offense that is based on principles of Dr. Tom's? I'll take that. Now that is a stretch or a crap, how ever you want to frame it. Chip Kelly's offense based in the Osborne principle??? Ha! Ha! WOW! Nebraska 2015: 439 passing plays - 434 running plays Oregon 2015: 340 passing plays - 570 running plays Frost has said repeatedly that he wants an offense with a more powerful running game in addition to the up tempo-quick strike passing game... and that's exactly the type of offense that he ran at Oregon this year and that Frost will run in Florida. Unfortunately I'm going to have to join the chorus in saying that this person going by the name RADAR does not know what they are talking about... and appears to know nothing about football. Any offense which ranks 5th in rushing yards per game in the COUNTRY, should not be characterized as pass-happy. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/23
  22. Gus Johnson? I love the Gusgasms!!! Haha! Yea that guy! Those two are my favorite announcers to listen to during a game but gosh dangit. It seems like trouble follows them every time. McDonough was the one that did the BYU hail mary, the VaTech "hail mary" in 2009. He did the Michigan/MSU game this year. Those are just the ones I know off the top of my head. Gus Johnson is great. I love how excited he gets. He is really having a lot of fun in the booth. I like Joel Klatt with him this year. Klatt is a bright guy. McDonough's call of the Michigan-MSU final play was amazing. His voice cracked so much because he was in so much disbelief of what happened.

Unlike the current staff, he has actually been in Lincoln. I realize that the current staff was getting run out of Corvallis and found a safe house in Lincoln, but this is embarrassing. At least Frost has an idea what to expect. Or if you are Mike Riley, a safe hotel.
