  1. Culver's is good. Their butterburger taste is definitely different, and very flavorful. Far as I know, Tastee's is still open. As far as looks, the place really hasn't looked any different for a long time, so using that as your standard probably isn't the guage you want to use. The place has always looked a bit dilapidated, at least since I've been in town (Came for college in '86, basically lived here ever since)
  2. That's it, FLU. Crazy how you remember that stuff. o.O
  3. Oh... Bobby 'the Brain' Heenan. The Undertaker. The different incarnations of the Ultimate Warrior. Ric Flair. Bret Hart. Good gracious, those were some crazy days. I remember a black wrestler with a parrot, I believe. Coco something, I think was the name he went by. Plenty of others that came and went over time.
  4. Gads I feel old... I haven't followed the wrestling scene for a while... my heyday was when you still had Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Jesse, British Bulldogs, Andre the Giant, etc. etc. Was fun to watch, and back then, the secret hadn't been revealed about it not being real. While the questions were there, you never quiet knew for sure. Fun times. Always entertaining to watch, regardless. I remember some cartoon they even made with those stars as the main figures for Saturday morning. Crazy stuff.
  5. Actually, zoogs, you stated it very well. You stated it in a manner that doesn't panic, doesn't state the wheels are falling off, but rather states it in such a way that it shows the deficiencies of the team, but doesn't exaggerate in respect to our problems. I still have a ton of confidence in this team and this staff. We lost one game, by 6 points, to a team that was better than expected. You examine it, move on, and come out more focused and ready to roll the next game. That's what I expect, and I think that's what will happen.
  6. Everything listed within 10 I think is probably a possible upset pick. But the two outside of that that I'd be wary of... Wisky and Utah St. The Aggies are a bit better than I think most people are giving credit right now, and with the way Wisky started the season, that could be a lot closer than expected. The other is the Iowa v. UNI game. UNI gave Wisky a run for their money, and Iowa has already lost to ISU. That one wouldn't surprise me at all to see UNI come in and catch the Squawkeyes at home. Should be interesting, for sure. Anything from a 4 to 5 win slate to an undefeated slate is possible this week, I would think.
  7. See, now I really like King Kong's, and didn't think it was overpriced at all, considering their burgers are huge, and you don't pay any more than you would at a table service place. Opinions vary, I guess. But yeah, I liked King Kong's as well. And mmg, I KNEW there was someplace I was forgetting. Not for everyone, but the loose meat sandwich taste of Tastee's.... ahhhh... course, there is a little joke among our friends, about why they call it Tastee's... because you taste it all week. But the flavor and the food is very good. And their shakes and malts are fantastic as well.
  8. Watering Hole has good burgers. If you want to go South in town, and go out to 27th and Pine Lake, Red Robin is chain, but the burgers are great. Lazlo's are good, but I usually go for something else there... the Pub Club or the Voodoo Chicken. C. Berry's is great, but I always get their bbq nachos, absolutely the best!
  9. Nuance, from what I understand of it, the link below is the trailer that has the terrorists up in arms. Terrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends. May they find peace.
  10. I see... I didn't read Swarbrick's comments closely enough. It said they get to participate in their non-BCS bowl package. I would assume that means when the playoff hits, they also won't be eligible for the conference's auto-bid to the Orange Bowl as well, considering that's their affiliated bowl. From the short video they had on the ACC website, sounds like there might be a little more news later in the day. Interesting alignment developments, indeed.
  11. Interesting... so official announcement must have come this morning. Here's a link: http://espn.go.com/boston/story/_/id/8369070/notre-dame-sports-football-hockey-acc The big kicker that makes it different than the Big East arrangement is the 5 games a year in football. Also makes it sound like Notre Dame also gets to participate in the ACC's bowl package as well, although if you're not playing a full ACC schedule, how exactly does that work? If you go 5-0 or 4-1, and have the best perecentage in the conference, do you get to go to the Orange Bowl? Interesting logistics behind it to work out. Give credit to ND, if they have to, at some point in the future, belong to a conference to get a playoff bid, this will make it fairly easy to transition right into the conference. Even more interesting when yo uread this link from the ACC website: http://www.theacc.com/genrel/091212aaa.html Buried at the bottom of that story is that the presidents evidently also voted to increase the exit fees to 3 times the annual operating budget, stating that currently, that would equate to an exit fee of over $50 million. So they're also strengthening the penalty if anyone should want to exit from now on. VERY interesting moves by the ACC.
  12. Same song different verse. Isn't this the same rumor that was floating about them joining the Big XII as well? Be interesting to see what comes of it. Think what you will of Notre Dame, I've never been a fan (actually one of my strong dislikes in college football), but their name still garners attention, and would probably be the one school out there that could ensure some long-term stability in the ACC. Better believe if that's happening, though, that there's likely to be another school coming as well.
  13. Put a few updates in here: Volleyball team swept their first weekend, and is currently 5-5. Some tough losses, but some good wins as well. Men's soccer team is 2-2 after beating Seattle 3-2 over the weekend. Lost a couple tough matches over last weekend to Mercer and Bradley, but were at least competitive against Bradley. Have a good weekend of tests out on the Left Coast, against San Diego State, and at UC Riverside (ranked 25). Women's soccer team is having the toughest time, showing at 0-7. They've showed some good fortitude in games. Still think they might surprise some people in Summit League play. News came today of two good developments: The women's basketball team got an Oklahoma St. transfer: http://www.omavs.com/news/2012/7/23/WBB_0723122424.aspx?path=wbball and the men's hockey and men's basketball teams got a new five-year broadcast deal with 1620 the zone and 11802 the zone 2 in Omaha: http://www.omavs.com/news/2012/9/11/MBB_0911124923.aspx?path=mbball It'll be nice to have some consistency/stability for their broadcasts.
  14. The part about someone not winning their division winning the conference doesn't bother me so much. Your last comment is basically the thorn in the side of the BCS Championship for many years, and likely will still have the ability to hinder the playoff a bit even. Though, at that point, at least you're playing it out on the field.
  15. This article from Ken Hambleton at the LJS says most of what Erstad's thinking was, I believe: http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/baseball/huskers-beef-up-baseball-schedule/article_dc3fd43c-b657-5641-a02d-9cf437a6b5f8.html Basically saying that he wanted to schedule tougher to challenge the team and to boost RPI. I think he did a pretty good job of that. The lack of a long homestand is what I think they'll likely have to live with until the reputation can be built back to where DVH had it in the early to mid 2000s. If we can get back there, we can probably start shopping home and home series with many of the higher level RPI teams. But it's probably going to take a few years of a schedule like this to get back there, which is basically what he says in the article.
  16. Two links, then some comments. First, the direct link to the schedule: http://www.huskers.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=100&SPID=33&SPSID=103 Then, the link to the story from huskers.com about the schedule: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=205679009 31 on the road, 21 at home, rough first month and a half in that respect, with only 5 games in February and March at home until the very last weekend of March. Pretty balanced after that home and away, it seemed. Good test for this team. Lot of young and pretty decent talent coming in, it seems like. Good way to test them early. Listing of the teams and ending RPI from last season: CSUB: 166 CS Fullerton: 20 USC: 99 Texas: 52 New Mexico: 63 Northern Colo.: 270 Lou. Tech: 114 UC Irvine: 89 Illinois: 84 K State: 145 Northwestern: 242 Iowa: 190 Creighton: 133 Ohio St.: 72 Arky: 9 Purdue: 12 Okla. St.: 100 Rutgers: 107 Indiana: 79 Minnesota: 139 Michigan: 201 So, by my count, only 2 teams on the noncon outside the top 150, Add five more between 100 and 150. That leaves 7 from the top 100 RPI from last year in the noncon. Pretty decent challenge for the team. Should also help build the RPI as the year goes along. Should be interesting. Have my thought on series we should definitely be sweeping, but I'll wait on those for a later date. Nice schedule, decent challenge. Should be a fun year, I think!
  17. Aye. But what I've taken from it is that they had to gameplan for an offense they had little/no film on (lot of possibilities on what style of offense they would run), had to gameplan for 3 potential quarterbacks with different styles & different strengths, and they still only gave up 13 points, only 3 in a second half after adjustments, and only 260 yards total. For a first effort, I'm not going to complain. While I won't give it an A effort, I will give it a strong B-, with a load of potential for improvement. That's why I think much of the what appears to me to be overwrought handwringing over the performance isn't justified. Even Bo said he thought they probably through too much at the players for what USM ended up using, but I also think they had to provide for many pieces that didn't end up happening as well. The rest of the season isn't going to present any situation that will be that tough to gameplan for again. Good first effort, and I think we'll see improvement as the season goes on.
  18. 1 game to prove the point about dropped passes - '10 Texas. We don't drop passes in that game that were clearly in or at the hands of the receivers, we win that game. Even as badly as other portions of that game were played, if we catch the ball in that game, we win, and it isn't even close.
  19. Yeah, mmg. Forgive me if I'm reading it wrong, but I don't think you read what I actually posted. That wasn't for the '96 band. If you read the description of the award, it's actually for having a history of having demonstrated prowess at the highest level in that field. In other words, more of a 'lifetime achievement' style award if you will. You can also only win once, and ours was only the fifteenth to have won the award. The band since that time has kept that same level of excellence, that same level of performance. I don't agree that we need to step ANYTHING up. We're already there, and I think that recognition backs that up. I'm not a big fan of 'modernizing' just for the sake of it. I think this is one area where modernization does nothing but hurt. So I'll likely be one of those asking to keep the excellence we have, instead of trying to 'step things up', when I don't think we have anything in need of 'stepping up'. I think our level is already there.
  20. Over. Think that moniker will get used often. Over/under on the number of touches Ameer gets - 15
  21. Okay... this has been an interesting discussion. For anyone that thinks the marching band at Nebraska doesn't measure up? We were the fifteenth recipient of the Sudler Trophy, found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Philip_Sousa_Foundation#The_Sudler_Trophy Basically, recognizing marching bands around the country that, in the words of the organization giving it out, "identify and recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence who have made outstanding contributions to the American way of life. The Sudler Trophy is awarded annually to a college or university marching band which has demonstrated the highest musical standards and innovative marching routines and ideas, and which has made important contributions to the advancement of the performance standards of college marching bands over a period of years." You can only receive it once, and they went to awarding it every other year starting in '07. I would say being awarded that trophy shows that on the national level, at least, we are recognized among the top marching bands in the country. I also found this link by someone that went through and power ranked who he thought were the best pre-game performances in the country: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/814829-college-football-power-ranking-the-top-25-college-marching-band-pregames I understand its bleacher report, so yes, I take it with a grain of salt. But he did rank us 13th in the nation. Those were really the rankings I was able to find regarding bands. I really think we tend to take it for granted, and don't quite understand what we have here. I think a lot of folks think of a 'the grass is greener' type situation, when I don't it's really as far off as people think. I think we fit in just fine with the tradition of great marching bands within this conference.
  22. As I was typing, borNred... AS I WAS TYPING. ROFL
  23. Gonna take Wash St. tonight to win over BYU. I like BYU well enough, but I want to see the Pirate come out fighting early. I think he'll be looking to make a statement in his first game, and I think they'll find a way to pull off an upset. I'll say 28-21.
  24. My go-tos, for the most part, are Empyrean Ale's Dark Sky Vanilla Porter (love the flavor) and Third Stone Brown, or more regularly, New Belgium's 1554. If 1554 is around, that's what I'm drinking. Smoothest dark I've ever tasted, and the chocolate comes across VERY nicely. Other than that, I'll give anything a go as far as beers at least once.
  25. Over. By a lot. Human interest element that they like to play up in these broadcasts. Over under on wave start time (over being past time listed, under being prior to time listed) - mid 3d quarter
