Bugeater
This may have been discussed already somewhere, but I haven't been around here much since the game so I may have missed it. Anyway, it was sometime in the 2nd qtr, the refs were measuring to see if WF got a first down, and when they had the stick up in the air to pull the slack out of the chain, it looked like it was several inches in front of the ball, but when they put the stick down they let the chain slack back up and set it right next to the ball. It seemed very suspicious to me, I was wondering if anyone else caught that. Quote Link to comment

AuroranHusker
Might have been an optical illusion. Actually, it looked like the orange padding came loose from the yardage down-marker.... Quote Link to comment
Kruzu
Totally saw this and we couldn't stop talking about it. The guy appeared to let the chain slack about a foot. Bizarre Quote Link to comment
I Bleed RED
It was because the orange padding came loose and that is what you saw beyond the ball. The black pole was always behind the end of the ball and it was a first down and the chain was tight. Quote Link to comment

Bizarre Yep, it looked like it was a good six inches in front of the ball. I wish I had a tape of the game. Quote Link to comment

I swear that chain looked loose lying next to the ball. Quote Link to comment
DJR313
It was the home-team retractable chain. INSTANT FIRST DOWN! Quote Link to comment
Foppa
Completely! I've wanted to start a topic on this, but I couldn't record the game, so couldn't go back to check it and confirm it...however, all 4 of my friends saw the stick start to come down a good 3 inches in front of the ball, and then get moved back to exactly the center of the football, with no question as to why. It was very obvious! Nothing said on TV or anywhere else! Thanks for posting this, apparently the ACC chain gang uses rubber links... Quote Link to comment
I Bleed RED
I gotta get me some of the Kool Aid that gets served around this place. Oliver Stone would be proud of you guys. Quote Link to comment
Bugeater
It was the home-team retractable chain. INSTANT FIRST DOWN! Yeah, I know. It doesn't help that the resident conspiracy theorist here brought the topic up. Quote Link to comment
captain obvious
The padding came off. It was clearly visible in the broadcast. Quote Link to comment

BIGREDFAN_in_OMAHA
I'll have to watch it again but I thought the same thing. It did seem like the stick was originally pulled well past the ball and then he moved it back even with the ball and there appeared to be kinked chain on the ground next to the ball.
