papersun87
Boy, I can't decide whether to post "greatest" or "favorite" . . . the two lists are quite different. Meh. FAVORITE GUITARISTS (in no order) Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria) David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) John Mayer (himself . . . and the Trio) Phil Collen (not Phil Collins, learn the difference noobs. And Def Leppard) Jeremy Post (Model Engine) Mark Tremonti (Creed/Alter Bridge) These guys have influenced my playing more than anyone else. Quote Link to comment
eliot1171
How can you even think about leaving out Hendrix? I would have him in the top two competing with Stevie Ray Vaughn. Also check out Al Di Meola. I would have to agree that Tremonti seems to be forgotten way too much on most of these lists. Also, I would put Mayer up to nearly anyone in an acoustic or electric improve battle. Quote Link to comment

John Mayer is so over-looked as a player due to his popularity as a singer/performer. See him in the Clapton GuitarFest is you have a chance.. on DVD Quote Link to comment
HUSKER 37
Usually, when I hear best Guitar threads, I automatically think Hendrix and SRV in no particular order. I was impressed with John Mayer at the Clapton GuitarFest...but still feel the need to not mention it in public..To popular with the "Pop" croud? Dickie Betts voice is so bad, it tarnishes my view of his guitar playing..Plus Duane overshadowed him (and Clapton when he was with Derrick/Dominos). I thought Zappa only played xylophone.. The only one I ever talked to was Matt Guitar Murphy from The Blues Brothers at the Zoo Bar, but the best I ever saw play in person was probably Jimmy Page... Mato Nanji, of Indigenous was great too. Some that usually get little mention that I always liked: Billy Gibbons-(ZZ Top). Robbie Robertson Robin Trower Terry Kath-Chicago Albert King Carlos Santana Elvin Bishop Larry Carlton David Gilmour - Pink Floyd Neil Young Kurt Cobain - Nirvana George Harrison The Edge - U2 Freddy King Tom Morello - Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits Buddy Guy Dick Dale Steve Cropper - Booker T. and the MG's and Blues Brothers Bo Diddley Peter Green- (old) Fleetwood Mac Steve Howe - Yes T-Bone Walker Lightnin' Hopkins Johnny Winter Kim Thayil - Soundgarden Rick Nielsen-Cheap Trick Ted Nugent Eddie VanHalen Joe Walsh Don Felder Quote Link to comment

DeathCultArmaggedon
It's obvious that this thread hasn't been visited by many metalheads. I agree with most of the aforementioned choices, and would like to add some of my own nominations. In no particular order: 1.) Jeff Loomis (Nevermore) 2.) Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) 3.) Buckethead (Buckethead) 4.) Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass) Quote Link to comment

Still upset at them for not coming out with an album the Summer of '82? and forcing me to buy Michael Jackson's Thriller to feed my VH fix. Plus he somehow stole my Battery/screw gun to the pickups idea... They played out here last Friday, but didn't find out about it in time. I still wonder why Rolling Stone has him so far down their list of 100 greatest... Quote Link to comment

HUSKER 37
...I thought Zappa only played xylophone.. Zappa played alot of different instraments , but his guitar playing was his greatest feature. You must not know much about Zappa. I just remember seeing his picture on one of my Brother's collection of albums and thinking that Arab's sure have big noses..and later thanking my parents for not naming me "Dweezil" or "Moon Unit". His Music has been getting some airplay on Local FM stations lately, but it still strikes me as a little too hap-hazzard for my taste..I almost get a similar feeling after listening to Phillip Glass but without the familiar structure...I mean..You could tell by his compositions, he was pretty intelligent, but I suspect he was never able to get the sound he wanted. Still..Anybody who mentions Huskies in a song about Yellow Snow can't be all bad. (I might have to try some more listens) Quote Link to comment
