Jason Peter on Rome today

listening to jason right now; he's talking about his brother and how he was recruited by notre dame.

 

long story short, holtz recruited jason's brother damian (jason says flat-out says that damian had more talent than both he and christian) and everything was cool right-up until damian's pool accident.

 

it looked like damian might not have ever walked again. his family was holding vigil over him and this is what really frosts jason: not once did holtz call damian and ask how he was doing. not *once* did holtz he drop a note and say, "we're here for you, we support you and we're praying for your speedy recovery". it sounds like neither holtz or notre dame didn't even take the time to send a card.

 

additionally... even when damian did recover and did show up at notre dame to attend class... NO-ONE at notre dame even approached him to even ask how he was doing. for all intents and purposes, he didn't exist.

 

tom osborne on the other hand did call. he was concerned and he did care. other nebraska staff members called on damian. mack brown called along with a score of other coach that he turned down.

 

jason says that osborne offered helped damian get with physicians and specialists to see if his brother could ever play again. he says that osborne wasn't optimistic, but he did it more so damian could have closure. damian would later be an assistant to charlie mcbride at nebraska for three years and now he's a financial analyst.

 

jason makes the comparison between holtz and osborne. jason says that all notre dame has to do is open the doors to notre dame and BAM they have a top 10 recruit class on an off-year. nebraska never had stellar success when it came to recuiting, top 25 at best.

 

so why is it that nebraska earned two national championships and the lion-share of a third? kids know character, said jason, and will play their hearts-out for coaches when the *KNOW* and *TRUST* their coach implicitly.

 

yah, jason is still mad at holtz. hope they never meet at an ESPN mixer.

Its refreshing to hear someone take responsibility for their actions. After his dad asked him "Why dont you just quit" he woke up and realized he got himself in this now he has to get himself out and it wasnt anyone elses fault but his own. Good ole self reliance.

 

 

Let's hope he maintains. I have heard that no one is ever unaddicted to heroin.

He rips Holtz in his book to. His book talks about the struggles his brother had and how ND and Holtz basically ignored him. Haven't finished the book yet, but it is a good one.

When the younger Huffman was injured, he said that Holtz made it clear that he was a "non-entity" until such time as he could contribute.

 

Same thing happened all the time at Arkansas. A cold way of viewing the very people that can make or break you as a coach...

Now come on...do you really think that BC would feel this way? BC put the players above all else...including winning or coaching.
