Xavi has also been excluded from Spain's international squad for the matches against Scotland and Lithuania as a result of tendonitis. Xavi was missing through injury (tendonitis in his left Achilles), while David Villa was suspended following his red card at Athletic Bilbao last weekend. Carles Puyol was left out, along with Sergio Busquets, which meant a start for Mascherano in midfield.
