I believe we are usually referred to as NEB on tv.

 

I don't remember seeing NU used recently for us (I also haven't watch many games on TV in the past 4 years).

 

UNL is our academic name. I went to UNL, but I don't root for UNL.

 

For MSU fans, you can refer to us as Lord, Sire, Guaranteed Loss Every Year, or Big Ten Champions. Your choice.

No it's not. UNL = the academic side of the university. NU = the athletic side.

 

The school when founded in 1869 was called Nebraska University (just two years after Nebraska was made a state actually). When the state merged Nebraska University with Omaha University and created the University of Nebraska system in 1968 Nebraska University became UNL and Omaha University became UNO but Nebraska-Lincoln decided to keep the name NU for it's athletics side as a tie to the university's history and tradition as the first major school in the state.

 

We have two main fight songs, one entitled Hail Varsity ends with Hail to the Men of Nebraska U and our other is simply titled Dear Old Nebraska U.

 

Both the N and U were featured together on the side of the helmet until the 1970's.
