Assessing the Talent: Maurice Purify is a 6-5, 215 pound Juco out of College of San Francisco, California (Originally from Eureka, California). He's from the same college that Nebraska recruited current offensive tackle Cornelius Thomas from. CCSF is known through the college football coaching world for it's JUCO talent. It is third in the country on the JUCO list for most players who get scouted and recruited to the DIV-A ranks (37 current DIV-A players). Oklahoma, Kansas St and Texas A&M all recruited players from that junior college last year.

 

CCSF has been an explosive scoring machine this year. The are the JUCO version of Texas Tech. They averaged about 49 points per game the last 3 games and are currently 5-0 on the season. One guy who has helped make CCSF a force to be feared is Maurice Purify. He has been all over the field this year, streching out defense like Tech does.

 

CCSF has a bye week this weekend, hence the reason he is visiting. He currently has an offer from Nebraksa and none one else, but that could change. CCSF has outscored it's last 5 opponents 219-26 and have won 4 of the last 5 California juco championships (they finished 11-1 last year). CCSF almost finished with back to back undefeated seasons, had it not been for a controversial pass interference call against arch rival College of the Canyons last year. Purify received all state honors last year. He finished last season with 37 catches for 953 yards and 11 touchdowns.

 

Odds of becoming a Cornhusker: 87% Like i mentioned, he has 1 offer, and that's Nebraska, but he is hoping one of the California schools like USC, CAL, UCLA finally give him an offer. One drawback to him is the fact he will graduate late (In May), which could turn some teams off from recruiting him, but if he continues to have a good season, the offers might roll in.

 

One interesting fact is that his school has already played Fresno St College (40-0), the same college that Steve Allen and Andre Jones are from and both those JUCO's will be here this weekend as well.

CCSF beats Laney 27-8

In a battle featuring two of the state's top running backs, City College of San Francisco defeated Laney College 27-8, as CCSF's Tyreece Jacks had touchdown runs of 40 and 31 yards and Jimmy Collins threw for two touchdowns.

 

Shining in defeat for Laney was tailback Frank Summers who ran 37 times for 152 yards, most coming on runs between the tackles that took three and four Ram defenders to bring him down.

 

The Eagles stunned the Rams by scoring on the opening possession as Chunga Steel had a 47-yard kickoff return and Summers ran on six of Laney's first eight plays before finishing off the drive with a 7-yard touchdown.

 

Laney missed the extra point as CCSF's pressure unnerved the kicker to the point that the Rams' Larry Grant blocked the kick with his ankle.

 

CCSF took the lead later in the first quarter as Strom, who was 12-of-23 for 214 yards on the evening, threw a long pass down the right sideline to a wide-open Aaron Straiten for a 53-yard touchdown.

 

The Rams added a second touchdown midway through the second quarter when the 5'10" 195 pound Jacks, who's a freshman out of Woodside, ran off-tackle behind the left side of his line for a 40-yard touchdown.

 

The extra point attempt was blocked by Laney and defensive back Kyle Williams picked up the ball and ran it all the way back for two points, and keeping Laney within 12 at 20-8.

 

Jacks, who carried the ball 23 times for 216 yards, must be one of the most entertaining backs in the JC ranks this year. His speed allows him to hit the corner quickly and when he turns it, he chews up yardage quickly. Laney tried to be aggressive in defensing him, but often Jacks would start one way and then reverse his field for a large gain.

 

As long as the game was close, Laney could afford to keep hammering away with Summers. At 5-11, 244, Summers is a tough runner to bring down. The Rams, which came into the game with one of the top run defenses in the state, tried to take away the outside and force him into the middle and take their chances with linebackers Todd Beck and Devin Bishop.

 

CCSF opened the 2nd-half scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Maurice Purify.

 

With the deficit up to 12, and Summers beginning to feel the effects of a balky groin, Laney looked to emphasize the pass.

With most of the Eagles completions to this point coming on short passes to the middle of the field, CCSF began dropping its linebackers into coverage. This result in interceptions on consecutive possessions, one by Beck and another by Grant.

 

Laney quarterback Houston Lillard faced tremendous pressure all night long, and even his attempts at scrambling were muted by the Ram defense.

 

Although the offense struggled, the Eagle defense was resilient. At the stage of the game where the Rams have traditionally destroyed opponents, they were unable to get their passing attack going and Laney was beginning to wrap up Jacks before he could begin accelerating.

 

While CCSF's offensive attack isn't the aerial circus that it's been during the past two years, there are times when its talent can astound you.

 

Up 20-8 with the ball on its own 26, Collins through a quick hitch pass to Purify. Purify made a move, shook his defender and went tearing down the right sideline. On some formations, CCSF will split one receiver way to outside, if second defender goes with him, that'll open up the middle for another receiver, or the ever-elusive Jacks. By the time the Laney defense caught up with Purify, they were able to force him out of bounds at the Laney 31 for a 43-yard gain.

 

Next came one of the most astouding runs anybody will see at any level of football.

 

Jacks took the handoff and started toward the right sideline. Hemmed in, he reversed his field, eluding one tackle, preventing a loss then a second tackle avoiding a really big loss. Instead of reversing the ball all the way across the field, he cut up inside. As he was snaking his way through the Laney secondary, he froze one defender cutting left, ran by him then froze another cutting right. Whatever was left of the defense chased Jacks in vain as he scored a 31-yard touchdown.

 

Even the opposing Laney fans were impressed, with one yelling out, "Who's got TIVO? Who's got TIVO?" Although the Laney College field doesn't have a video screen, anyone who views a replay will undoubtedly see that at least seven defenders had a shot at Jacks.

 

Up 27-8, CCSF staved off a late scoring attempt by Laney. After a 34-yard pass from Houston to Marcus Carter put the ball on the CCSF 3-yard line, the Rams survived three running plays from Summers and a sneak by Houston as time ran out.

 

CCSF, which came into game ranked 2nd in the state, raises their record to 5-0. Laney, which was ranked 9th in Northern California and 14th overall, sufffers its first loss of the season and is now 4-1.
