So I'm reading lots of headlines about Dem wins in elections today...

Has anyone considered the irony that we've got people derping on Al Franken via an internet message board...while Al Franken fights off the so-called Net Neutrality attempts that would ultimately restrict access and traffic to these very same message boards?

FYI - the Senate today shot down a Republican effort to stop the Federal Communications Commission from regulating the Internet through net neutrality. The vote was along part lines - 52-46.

Good. You realize republicans are on the wrong side of that effort right? The FCC regulations don't go far enough but at least its a start and this is an issue Al Franken absolutely nails.

What bothers me about the whole thing is 99% of people don't seem to understand what net neutrality is, at all, or why it needs to be in place. There are other people that seem to think it's exactly the opposite of what it is.

What bothers me about your post was that I was simply reporting on the vote and not taking sides.

It's net socialism... right?

I'm surprised that I haven't heard that one yet.

Just so I understand this it sounds like they want to MAKE another process that is faster andif you want to sign up for it you may. Kinda like if you want to you can pay for dialup or high speed depending on what you want. Am I close or not? :dunno

Just another way of making free speech not free.

Well, it is a little fishy finding votes in the back seat of a car and then counting them. That was one thing I found a little fishy. Are you trying to tell me you think Frankin won that seat straight up?!?!

That's what the election committee and the courts said... I have no reason to doubt them.

YOu don't doubt a liberal state finding in favor of a liberal politician. I hope you are that understanding whne it is a conservative who gets the benefit of the doubt. Liberal courts find for a liberal politician about some very fishy circumstances I for one am not that convinced. :xcuse

So would you find a Conservative Court voting in favor of a conservative politician fishy? It is amazing how one-sidedly blind we have become over two idiotic terms like conservative and liberal. Words brought to power by radio/tv hosts and politicians who sought to divide us. Franken will be/is just as bad as any other put into that office. Power to the middle class!

Yes I would be a little leery if a conservative judge made a judgment for the person with their ideals. Did you ever notice the supreme court basically falls right along party lines except for one independent thinking judge. Most know how the other eight are going to vote before the vote comes out! Scary really!! :ahhhhhhhh

Not really no. I could get really really technical about this if you want. The gist of it is, no they aren't making anything "faster" they are simply artificially slowing down traffic for everyone that doesn't pay them more. I say artificially because networks are designed to work at certain speeds, what they are attempting to do is stick software between you and the internet or vise versa that slows down traffic for people that won't or can't afford to pay to use the fast lane.

For an actual traffic equivalent analogy, it'd be like them taking and restricting a lane of I-80 to no speed limit, while not widening the road, and making that lane only usable by people that could pay an extra fee all while it congests the of the rest of the interstate. Except these aren't cars, you don't get a Lamborghini to travel across the internet. At it's most basic it's electrical or optical pulses sent down a wire at the speed of light.

The whole "want to make it faster" argument the republicans talking points use is disingenuous at best. These companies can always buy more bandwidth to do that, and websites can add servers at another datacenter, etc. The networks can always upgrade capacity or speed. (in the US we are behind tons of countries for internet access speed). It's simply a way for them to squeeze you for more money without actually upgrading their infrastructure. The other problem is, they want to get you coming and going. Companies like comcast are trying to charge level3 more to interconnect to them because they are netflix's network provider. Which is really just a way for them to try and remove access and raise costs of a competitor to their on-demand service. It also sets an artificial barrier to entry on the internet for new technology companies. Which is another good way to stifle technical innovation (along with software patents and really unreasonable copyright terms).

So basically the internet is going to end up working like this, without net neutrality:

you --->$ internet-service provider

would you like google with that? FU, Pay me.

would you like Netflix with that? Have you heard about our great ON-Demand service for $20 a month (plus $35 a month dvr rental)?

would you still like Netflix? that'll be $50/month please, on top of netflix's monthly fee.

would you like huskerboard? Have you visited our sponsor huskermax.com, the authority on all husker news and discussion?

still want huskerboard? yeah that'll be $2.

and so on.

And companies like google, netflix, facebook, etc are going to have to pay extra to have good service to people already paying their internet service providers for access to these services on the other end.
