Solich was fired to prevent being mediocre. We have had 12 consecutive seasons that were not as good as 2003. When do you think the Huskers will have a season as good or better than 2003?

Sorry to tell you, but Solich had already achieved mediocrity. Pederson tried to reverse that but he could not.

Solich was making moves to correct things. Remember he actually fired the DC & pulled in Pelini to be the DC in 2003. Solich was in the NC game in 2001. Yes, Miami kicked the crap out of NU that year, but this was a '01 Canes team that most consider a top 5 all-time team. Most on this board would put them only behind the '95 & '71 Husker teams.

IMO Perlman & Pederson were the direct downfall to NU football. They listened to the talking heads & made the decison that ended the offensive identity to NU football & it has never recovered.

Despite all the conventional wisdom about everyone having "20/20 Hindsight", I've discovered that a lot of self proclaimed Husker fans simply do not possess such accurate hindsight.

That would not have fixed the poor recruiting, Adding another poor recruiter in Pelini was not a fix and Solich could not close a screen door.

Solich's '04 class was #14 on Rivals the day he was fired.

In 2003, a year the Huskers only lost three games, Steve Pederson fired Frank Solich, and stated that he would not let the huskers slip into mediocrity. Since then, the Huskers have lost more than three games every year. When will the Huskers return to the same level as the year Solich was fired, and when will the Huskers exceed the 2003 season results? I predict three losses for the Huskers in 2019, and less than three losses in 2020. I see the current staff at Nebraska for two additional years, then a new AD finally hires a coach that believes in an attacking D and a strong running game based on homegrown linemen. In 2018, a new staff makes improvements, and in finally returns to a three loss season in 2019. The improvement continues with a single loss season in 2020 which ends with a BCS bowl win.

Wow, sad thing is this took some time to think about. I didnt agree with the Callahan hire, but solich needed to go. So let's get over that 13 year gripe. Second of all, who really gives a rats behind what offense we run. If a coach came in here and threw the ball 70 times and won a national championship or two no one would care we only ran the ball 10 times a game. Who cares, Just win

Sorry don't agree...

I never understood this fall back line. Solich pulled in some very good talent. They also went for players that did not fit the typical offensive scheme.

Agree. Firing Solich was the biggest mistake ever made in college football.

I have always felt NU will be stuck where they are until they get back to an offense that focuses on the power run game. Just good old fashion, I formation running down hill & hitting the other team in the mouth. NU has always had really good FB's that can block & fight for yards. I just wish the current staff would go look at tape of Stanford or remember some of the beatings they took from them.

If you ask me, we should aim to get back to the level of the 2009 team. They were an offense away from being actual contenders. I know you are only using the 3 losses as the aiming point but if you actually compare the 2 teams ask yourself which team and season gave you more hope that Nebraska was close to getting back to where everyone wants it to be. IMO if you say 2003 you don’t remember how average that team actually was and just how elite that 2009 defense was.

Despite the dismal offense, I was very happy with the 2009 team. A team with a dominant defense will be in every game. One of the most impressive things about the 2009 D was the way they repeatedly saved the O after turnovers.

And yet he had trouble finding a job until a MAC school took a chance on him. Guess all those P5 AD's were fools.
