I know someone that used to work in the athletic department many years ago.  Still has some "contacts", for what that is worth.  He was told that SE knew his butt was hanging in the air after the black friday fiasco.  So, he was going to fire Riley and name Diaco as interim in an attempt to save his job.  Greene, et. al. found out about it and moved quickly and decisively to stop that from happening.  I"m the first to say this is, at best, third hand info, and very likely vapor, so take it at that.  If true, it really paints SE with a coat of weasel wax.

Firing Coach Riley at this point would be very bad karma for NU.

Replacing a .500 coach for a coach with a .297 win percentage....

Green would have been livid if SE did this without consulting him (assuming SE even had the authority).  There's no way he possibly could have thought this would have helped his situation.
