The answer is not expand to 8. Just take the 4 best conference champions and stop taking teams that didn't win their division.

What about the NFL wild card? Or the MLB Playoffs? Or the NCAA basketball tournament? All of those take teams that don't win their division.
Giving automatic bids to four of five P5 conferences would make the current system worse, IMO. The only way an automatic bid system will fly is by expanding the playoffs.

Ok, I would like it if we could have a March Madness type structure similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. That would be fun and ANYONE could be in it. That would be exciting! If a G5 team was really good that year then they could possibly be in the final game! (Remember Butler!) I would be for that. I guess one solution would be to have 8 teams-the 7 conference title winners and an undefeated G5 team (that would be the wild card). Would that work? There was a big discussion on 1620 the Zone before the playoffs started and that was one of the suggestions. I'm for expanding the playoffs just so we wouldn't have happen what happened this year: Two schools from the same conference vying for the National Championship.
