  1. Whoever asked Verduzco the question about whether he had ever had a QB competition this close: That was a great question and received a great answer/story from Verduzco. Loved his explanation of how you handle that and that it was his 2nd string QB who took them through the end of the season and into the playoffs where they beat Tony Romo's team 49-46.
  2. I think you missed this post/link: This is how these guys operate. "Situational Scrimmage" at the end of fall camp is how they roll. Also making everybody be on pins & needles regarding whether they are a starter or not is their modus operandi.
  3. This "situational scrimmage" to finish fall camp and keeping the depth chart close to the vest is all par for the course for these guys: https://ucf.rivals.com/news/frost-pleased-with-camp-effort-focus-soon-will-shift-to-first-game See how many of those quotes from prior to UCF's 2016 season sound similar to the scraps that we are getting.
  4. I've got a new possible scenario for you... Gebbia starts Akron, Colorado, & Troy but they have Martinez preparing to play against Michigan (where the Wolverines will have seen no game film of him). Gebbia might even still start against Michigan and they go to Martinez if things aren't going Nebraska's way. If the team responds and the offense moves better against Michigan under Martinez, then he is the starter the rest of the way, if healthy and Gebbia is used for mop-up duty.
  5. Not sure if we should be terribly happy that he hasn't been beat out by anyone yet. Also, there are players who are great in practice, but less-than-great under the lights. Looking forward to seeing the Real Product on the field this fall.
  6. Resurrecting this thread to let everyone know that his August projections are now out. Cliff's Notes for Nebraska fans: Nebraska is mentioned 19 times. Scott Frost comes in a #15 on the list of Head Coaches. Scott Frost comes in at #2 (behind only Chip Kelly) as "Offensive Coordinator" (actually the Playcaller for the team, not necessarily the one with the title of OC). Chinander comes in at #31 in Power 5 Defensive Coordinators Nebraska comes in at #27 in All FBS Preseason Rank (just behind Florida and just ahead of Iowa). He has Nebraska finishing 5th in the Big 10 West at 6-6 behind an undefeated Wisconsin, a 10-2 Iowa, and two 7-5 teams: Northwestern and Minnesota. Regarding his preseason point spreads, it is interesting to note that he calls Northwestern, Michigan State, and Iowa "Toss Up Games".The Cornhuskers would need to win those three to reach his record ceiling for Nebraska of 9-3 ( record basement of 6-6).
  7. Obviously there will be a depth chart issued prior to the Akron game, but I guarantee you that these coaches will be stressing ALL YEAR that the depth chart is fluid and you have to earn your plays in the game. In that sense, I think that Akron is going to be a bit of a "shakedown cruise" for that depth chart to be somewhat solidified. Speaking of Shakedown Cruise, here's a trip down memory lane for us older farts:
  8. Here's the other clip from today I was thinking of, related to this subject:
  9. Nebraska's offense will average 37 points per game (or better) in Year One. (Year 2 will be 42 points per game - or better.) The defense will add 4 or more TDs on the season. Scott Frost's Cornhuskers will face Chip Kelly's UCLA Bruins in a post-Christmas bowl game.
  10. I think it is worth resurrecting this thread with the comments that Barrett Ruud started out with today... Earlier in this thread we weren't quite sure how this would be used at Nebraska and I'm not sure we still do, but someone in video I watched today mentioned it "will have to be managed". How Frost & Co. manage this is one of the intriguing things to watch this year. I have the feeling that MOST of the hot shot freshman on this team might be used in just 4 games throughout the year, barring injuries to those ahead of them on the depth chart... just to maintain their 4 years of eligibility (if at all possible) and yet give them some game experience prior to the 2019 season. I'm thinking that, if the score and game situation allows it, you give some of the (say) 3rd string Freshman game experience in your non-conference games, and save your hotshot freshman's 4 games for where you are looking to surprise people... say Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio St. and Northwestern or Michigan State. For example, There could also be come creative uses of this rule to "spring" a previously unseen on film freshman at somebody (like, say a Game 4 Michigan).
  11. While the coaches are reticent, if you listen when the players name names, they are more likely to be your Number 1s (called out first).
  12. Collin Miller: "We're actually rotating a lot, you know, 'cause our offense does a pretty good job of keeping the ball going. So they can go 3 & out pretty quick, so you gotta have fresh legs [on defense]."
