  1. Ah, thanks for the reminder I forget that the parties and their philosophies were switched back then. But MLK Day was just adopted in 1983... when Regan was POTUS and didn't go into effect until 1986. I'll have to do some digging if I have time to see what leadership was in place in the late 80's in those states.
  2. Not at all the case or what I said if you actually read my comment. I'm quite familiar with the book. Aaron Sorkin adapted it to the Boradway stage and these two (amoung many others I'm sure) quotes were his changes in tone and tenor to scenes in the book. He recognized that Americans now days aren't able to get as much from flowery language and dumbed it down for the masses. Guess it doesn't always work.
  3. I just saw a couple quotes from Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird on Broadway. Thought they were interesting and thoughtful. "A mob is a place where people take a break from their conscience.” "A person is smart, people are dumb"
  4. I am not sure I buy into the fact that AL, AR, MS and VA ever had Dem governors and majorities but whatever. Only AL and MS still share the holiday btw, other states do honor Lee on different days however. Doesn't matter the party that designated the holiday as a shared one or decided that Lee still needs to be honored in any way its' not cool.
  5. I think it's something about "Music City" (which is Nashville, TN)
  6. Hey guys, remind me of how this (and Amy and Hilary etc) fits within all the male congressmen w/ "tough" reputations? Oh yea, those don't get "reported". Cuz they're men.
  7. I think this is one of the most profound markers of history I've read about. In Germany, across Europe and Russia they did research and have more than 70K markers put down where jewish lives were lost - makes it very personal to be standing in front of a home where people were taken away and murdered in the name of a government initiative. To learn that adults, teens etc were one members of a household that was dissolved , to learn their birth date and death date and manner is humbling. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/feb/18/stumbling-stones-a-different-vision-of-holocaust-remembrance
  8. I would have thought much better of him if he just said that, instead of saying it's god speaking to him in dreams.
  9. I think for many of us, a person's word (aka commitment) meaning something and the ability to prove that by honoring it is the definition of character. I get it that these guys have offers coming out the ying yang - that's why you take your time and fully look over all the opportunities and what is a real fit before committing. If it's $ that is the driving factor, cool - I know that's a big part of it today, especially for the Sr year transfers, and especially the O line, but I tend to be ok saying buh bye to folks that do this. I didn't have an opinion of him before, but the one I have of him now def will remember the lack of of honoring his word.
  10. The whole "I'M COMING TO NEBRASKA" on Wednesday then the "I"M COMMITTED TO OK" Saturday. Don't think we have any portal guys that flipped to us after comitting to another team two days prior.
  11. There was a study that came out showing that asthma was higher in children who grew up with gas stoves. (by 2.8% I think - based on a meta analysis of 40+ studies) The study was presented and comments about regulation and venting came up - GOP folks have taken the narrative and run with it just like the did with high effciency lights bulbs years ago and low flush toilets during the Mara-lardo's reign. There was also data that came out showing cognitive development being negatively impacted. https://time.com/6247293/gas-stoves-right-wing-memes/ In case you don't read that far, "The federal government does not currently have any laws or guidelines in place that require gas stove emissions be vented outdoors, even though such laws do exist for gas furnaces, water heaters, and dryers." There was talk of a rebate/tax credit of $850 to switch out your stove. Some cities/states have already been limiting gas utilities in new buildings and homes for some time. It's an effort to increase safety as well as decrease energy consumption. And guess who hates it? Gas & oil industry. And guess who does the dirty work for them because they take millions from them each year? The GOP, It's not hard to see the trees thru the forrest here, unless you just like to scream about $hit to get attention. And the impact on cognitive ability of kids .. well I can only assume perhaps thats how they intend to increase their younger generation of voters.
  12. I sorta feel like the gas stove obsession just might be the moment the GOP jumps the shark ... edit: I sorta feel like the gas stove obsession SHOULD be the moment the GOP jumps the shark ...
  13. Come on guys, as of this week the biggest problem is gas stoves. Keep up.
  14. Nope - TG is a good man with a rational approach to try and understand issues that supplement his beliefs, and if they don't he is fine with acknowledging the incongruence. He's continually impresses me with his ability to dig in to something to learn more and to then have an opinion based on facts even when it may not align what what his assumed beliefs might be. We could all learn a bit from him on that.
  15. Maybe the coach, knowing them and their backgrounds wasn't as interested as OSU and LSU
  16. This is really beautiful Nic, thank you for sharing. Here's where I have questions though, and I ask this with much respect to your situation above. Do you think it was the prayers that made this happen or the fact that you (and he) recognized that his time was limited and life conversations and moments together were appreciated more and happened more openly? Because if so I'd think those of us who might not believe in god wouldn't have the same experience you describe, and we (or at least I) do. I think prayer and god get a lot of credit for human nature and simple timing. I'm not sure that I'll say this in any sort of pc way, but I think that some folks are ok with thinking things just happen and others want to think that there's someone pulling the ropes to make it happen and that there's a reason for it (good or bad).
  17. So Bolsonaro learned from Trump that he needed to be outside the country to avoid conviction. Well at least we got Bannon caught and into custody so that he can't continue to influence others ..... wait ....
  18. Please - for those that will still vote for a person with an (R) behind their name - explain to me why.
  19. Ah, BUT (I say this as a former catholic) if that baby was never baptised it goes straight to hell. (I think they may have taken this out of the doctrin a few years ago now, but until the 2000's that kid was going down).
  20. Praying is to make the person doing it feel better. There is no cause and effect, it has nothing to do with the patient or person that's on the "receiving" end.
  21. Well there you go, the ESPN prayers worked.
  22. I wonder what the reception would be publicity wise if a jew or a hindu or muslim etc made a public move like this. IMHO, its not appropriate for tv. If its your choice to call attention to yourself "praying" on national television you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
  23. You know what? If thousands of americans donned tactical gear, took weapons and made plans to storm the capital and capture and/or kill government officials, members of the police etc based on something Mr. Schumer or Ms Pelosi or Waters said (or in your silly recent example of Jeffries) I'd also accuse them of inciting an insurrection. So you can pick, is it the behavior of the person getting people riled up or the thousands of idiots (and their chosen Proud Boy or local yahoo leaders) that thought he was giving them instructions? Either way THEY thought they were being told to storm the capital and take no prisoners. Incitement.
