  1. I've been to 3 games this year, and they've all been a copy of each other: Starting pitching shaky, offense ok, then Huskers blow it open with a big inning. Hopefully they can win the rubber match today against Illinios. I don't like losing to deep blue states. Overall, starting pitching looks to be a year (or more) away.
  2. No need to change uniforms but why not morph the N--just a little--into something more 21st century looking and less 19th century looking? Maybe an outline or a shadow or something. Not something straight out of looney toons like the Wiscy W And, I think NU has changed its uniforms with a number of minor changes over the years.
  3. Meh, Devaney should explain what he was thinking with that Osborne guy in the first place.
  4. Most people--me included--would rather see our current coaching staff progress vs. a regime change. We can only hope all eyes have been opened. A few things that came to mind: 1) The B1G was there for the taking this year. Sure WI, MSU, Mich, PSU, tOSU and on a good day Iowa are all good enough--but none of them is a world-beater, not this year. Yet the Huskers manage to forget how to play (and coach) defense and can't mount even a serious challenge. 2) Coaches (and fans) will expect young NU players to play at a high level next year and the year after, based on a wing and a prayer rather than experience. 3) Thin and too small on both lines. Didn't NU once build line depth with walkons? 4) Team speed on the field speed becoming a serious issue. Team speed on the sidelines also a serious issue. 5) NU can't handle prosperity and mistakes multiply like rabbits. And killer instinct? That is a pipe dream. 6) Many programs with no business attracting good talent do in fact attract good talent. NU is having trouble reclaiming its brand. 7) Receivers who presumably were serviceable receivers in high school come to NU and might as well be trying to snag the ball with a brick in each hand. 8) I said and heard "Where in the World is ____" more times this year than I can fathom. 9) One stud linebacker can't prop up an entire defense. 10) Playing in the Longhorn League this year would have been downright ugly. Thank you Dr. Tom. 11) Saturdays, not as fun as they used to be. 12) 9-3 would be a huge win at this point, but see #1.
  5. Good for Lavonte, and thank you Mr. David. I agree unfortunately he'll be overlooked because NU team defense is so poor. He stands out as the only guy on a defense with the ability and the desire to run down and tackle other top-level athletes.
  6. Yes, at Nebraska changing coaches doesn't work all that well. Keeping the coach and hounding him until he figures things out has worked out a heckuva lot better historically!
  7. Article is nothing more than a cheap shot at Nebraska. If a tree fell on The Sporting News would anybody hear it?
  8. He doesn't have it. Neither did TO early on. It can be learned but it requires intellect and savvy. He'll either figure it out soon or be exposed.
  9. We need to keep Bo and see if he can make the step up. No idea if he can. There's a very real possibility he can't close the deal in living rooms, in meeting rooms, and in the locker room. He's going to have to take a very critical look at things, starting especially with Bo.
  10. Bo did a great job of going from 5-7 to 9/10 wins. But he's nowhere near making the next step up. It's a question of what does he need to do and can he do it. Better recruiting, better player development, and smarter game management of personnel would be a great place to start.
  11. No, I don't see us ever stopping a running a QB. We just have to hope they get tired of running wind sprints down the field and throw up enough interceptions.
  12. Bo is responsible for what happens on the field. He has to have the leadership to rally his guys sufficiently to face a 3-5 team at home, with or without help from the fans. He does that, the defense doesn't get flat run over and the fans are more of factor. Head coach pushes buttons, he has to be all over it. There's no way around it, Bo has to get better.
  13. That was the rational part? Tom Osborne was a championship coach. Not all of his teams were championship teams. You bring up 1977 as if 1978 was the year that Osborne suddenly and finally became a "championship coach" where he finally fixed all those things your criticizing Bo for. Guess what? In 1978, Tom Osborne did have that huge breakthrough - he beat Oklahoma. You know what happened one week later? He lost to unranked Missouri at home. It wasn't until 4 years after that when Osborne finally had a pair of "championship teams," in 1982 and 1983 - and even they weren't quite good enough to go the distance. It took Osborne 22 years to get a team that could do that. Yep, completely rational. Bo has done all right. But losing at home to losing teams 3 straight years is a pattern. He might become a championship head coach (conference championship or better) but he has a step up to make to get there. His current MO isn't enough. Same with Osborne. He wasn't a championship coach out of the gate. He made the step up. I'm rooting for Bo, we'll see if he has the intellect to get there. If I had made the title of the thread "Bo should stay but has to get better" it would have been more obvious.
  14. Uh, nowhere did I say there needs there needs to be a new coach. Bo has a corner that needs to be turned and time to turn it. I hope that happens, he's something of a last, best chance to get back to prominence in my lifetime.
  15. Bo is not a championship head coach. His teams don't have "it" because he doesn't have "it". He may or may not find "it". Parallels to Frank Solich are emerging. Won some with previous coach's recruits but hasn't recruited as well himself and isn't able to manage or develop the talent he does have. Solich's learning time as head coach was cut short. Tom Osborne was a bowl loss away from being fired in 1977. He learned how to be a head coach just in time. Bo needs to stay viable with 9 wins a year until he figures it out. The danger comes if he thinks he's already a championship coach. He's been in championship programs and programs that have won championships but HE is not a championship head coach. He still has to make that step to get off the current treadmill. Championship coaches convince their players every game is important by focusing on the right things. Championship coaches develop depth on o-line and d-line. See Alabama and LSU. <End of the rational part.> First time I've seen a coach ice the receiving team before an onside kick with a timeout...
  16. Dude, it's Buffalo and take a look at their schedule. They're playing major programs out-of-conference. Rutgers, Penn State, Syracuse, Baylor. This is the first year you listed they have been competitive within their conference. Five wins with that schedule in Siberia is pretty dang good. And pounded Frank Solich for good measure. If Gill ends up staying at Buffalo IMO he'll end up being the next up-and-coming, hot-property coach. Also, it may be that there aren't that many guys interested in NU. It takes a special kind of crazy to want to go to a place where most of the fans see winning EVERY GAME as a birthright.
  17. If we just manage to be competitive in one of the last two games I'll be thrilled. Teams do watch films (other teams that is) and the only thing can keep KSU/CU from naming their score is indecision as to which weakness to exploit in this defense (ala Texas).
  18. Callahan: Stinking up some lower-tier NFL offense. Coz: Selling furniture in Des Moines. And no, there's nothing wrong with selling furniture. He might even be good at it.
  19. The kid is good, but more importantly is the COACH available?
  20. IBR is TO....TO is IBR.....so yes it will still be first hand If IBR is in fact TO then I'd like to offer the following name as food for thought: Paul Johnson, Navy But since IBR has already said his source is from the donor ranks, I'm just wondering about the future information flow.
  21. Thanks for the info so far, YOU ROCK!! Just wondering though, now that TO is in place will the information be as first-hand as it has been?
  22. I want Will for the Coaching staff, not AD. Will is a great communicator, has what it takes to win, is fully versed in the fan traditions and only one year removed from Pro ball where he is a certainty to make the Hall of Fame. How can we not, fight to get this man on staff, forget his coaching experience, his experience as a winner is what we need. The staff around him can quickly give him the systems he'll need to succeed, Will can and should be in Lincoln, right now. He is sorely missed by the Chiefs, it was his leadership that made the Chiefs rushing attack so productive. Get Will on board as a coach. Will is great. If just came in and taught guys how to block and the mental aspect of competing in the trenches that alone would get us 50% of the way back on track.
  23. And we're too far into this to risk anything but going with a proven college head coach.
  24. All the talk about changing coaches/coordinators is useless without first fixing the cause of the original probem. And it might even go beyond SP. My preference is to see SP go NOW--I mean today, before lunch--and let the coaches finish the year "intact" 4-8 or 5-7. Find an AD who can bring Husker nation back together and lead a real coach search. No one will blame NU for dumping its staff this time (unlike last time). Virtually any proven college coach can get us back to 8 wins within 2 years. That would be a huge improvement.
