  1. I can tell you where NOT to go. Don't go to Save Mart at 11th & Cornhusker. That place is a dive. Wait - is this serious?
  2. I admit I rolled my eyes a bit when I saw this thread title, but I have to say that this sounds like a really good idea. I don't think it should be called "Caylee's Law," though. I believe the mom killed her, but in the absence of a conviction, it's too presumptive to name the law after someone else's daughter. It also presumes guilt which, while I think most everyone thinks the mom is guilty, is not fair.
  3. Theta Chi. 626 N 16th Street, right next to Kappa Kappa Gamma. They lost their charter, though. It was always a small house, and a few years after my time there it closed down. Phi Mu owns the house now. We had plenty of girls at the house all the time, but not because we were so cool or because of the free beer. It was pretty laid back. I think the girls showed up because it was a pretty safe environment, unlike a lot of houses where the guys were all predators. I mean, we were predators, too. But we were nice predators.
  4. I think we have a puncher's chance. Depends on what the offense does. I'd like to know what Auburn's odds were this time last year. I know they started the season ranked quite low.
  5. The North Bottoms is a low-land region roughly bordered by the railroad tracks just north of Memorial Stadium on the south, I-180 on the west, Military Road on the north and the Devaney Center on the East. Tons of students live there, and as you wander through there you'll see parties and cookouts everywhere.
  6. It's just your basic "us vs. them" mentality. Humans are wired for this (as are other animals), so just about any arbitrary groups you put together will develop this mentality over time. You can even split the groups, mix the members and make two entirely new groups, and eventually you'll have "us vs. them" again. You see this in sports fandom, in politics, in nationalism, in.... everything. I pledged a really, really down-to-earth fraternity. Great guys, but no different than any guy in a dorm room. Same people, different living arrangements. That's it.
  7. Just noticed that Ubben wrote yet another blog about Nebrsaka. You'd think he'd let it go by now, but I think we're going to be a regular feature there. Don't give him the clicks. It's a dumb blog.

ESPN's recruiting guy says we'll still have a strong presence in Texas. Ubbs tries to get him to say we won't. He sticks to his guns. The end.

Ubben? Oh, you mean that little pointy headed crap spewing B12 guy.

  8. Lots on east side, too. Lots of what?
  9. There are several hotspots for tailgating around the stadium, but because of its location there aren't any huge parking lots available, so the tailgating is broken up quite a bit. The best area is to the west of the stadium, under the I-180 bridge. There are tons of tailgates, music, food and lots of red cups. Other places are in the North Bottoms, an area to the north of the stadium and the Indian Center at 10th & Military where there's plenty of room and plenty of grilling.
  10. WAT!!! There is just about no way Ohio State loses to Colorado. That is a dispirited team in the midst of coaching change, dire financial woe and bare cupboards talent-wise. The Buckeyes are out to win every game for Tressel this year. They will not be surprised by Colorado, especially not in The Shoe.
  11. I read that. Short story is, they have us going 6-2 and beating Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championship. I think most publications are going to put us in the Rose Bowl this year based on our defense alone.
  12. Is that Niles Paul at :23? Looks a bit like him, but the video is too small to be sure. EDIT - it's not Niles. You can see better about the one minute mark.
  13. Here's a writeup from YardBarker about the NCAA's denial of Alabama's appeal, which helps further explain why we may not face the same kind of penalty: The bold and bold/underlined may be why we face little if any further penalties from the NCAA over this. 'Bama was nailed for ten major violations in 2002, mostly because their boosters were giving their athletes cash. Since we haven't had anything like that kind of penalty lately, I think we'll be OK.
  14. By way of comparison, Alabama had a similar - but not the same - situation in 2007. The total value of the textbooks they received was around $40k, there were 201 athletes involved, and Alabama was forced to vacate a total of 21 wins from 2005-2007. The key difference here is probably that 22 of those athletes knew that they were getting improper benefits, while our athletes say they did not know they weren't supposed to be getting these books. Also in Alabama's case, some of their athletes were getting books for boyfriends/girlfriends, and we were not. Again, allegedly. Here's the NCAA's ruling on the 'Bama scandal: Alabama also self-reported their violations. They were not required to lose any scholarships, nor did they incur a post-season ban.
  15. Sorry. No bars. Only "historical significance." I'd have to say that puts a pretty big damper on the responses you're going to get. The only really truly historic thing in Lincoln is the State Capitol Building. It's a stone fortress built in the 1920s that has the distinction of being the only state capitol that was entirely paid for upon completion. We were a frugal people back in the day. Other than that......... We call it the Prairie Penis. You could mention that. I've always called it "The Great White Penis of the Plains." Kinda rolls off the tongue. that's what she said
  16. They were losing money if they did that. Typically the books lose about 75% of their value when they walk out the door. There's huge money in textbooks. All you have to do is make minor changes to the same text and you can sell it again next year as the "new" textbook, and last year's basically has zero value. EDIT - I did it twice in one thread! I misread what you were saying there. I thought you meant he bought the books. My bad. The devaluation of the books is still true, though. Just not pertinent.
  17. I tend to agree with this rule, though. The gist of it is, if the regular students aren't getting this, the athletes can't get it, either. Like Dr. Tom said, NO athlete is choosing Nebraska because our bookstore gave out free "recommended" textbooks to the athletes. But even still, you can't let something like that go. What I want to know is, what is the nature of our "probation?" Does this carry any kind of penalty, or is this just for show?
  18. Greek Row at nearly any other university - and especially in the Big Ten - is going to blow ours away. The closest thing we even have to a Greek Row is 16th from Vine to R, or maybe R from 14th to 17th. Neither is all that great. Anyone who's attended a Big Ten university has seen better. (nothing personal to our Greeks) Nebraska as a state has some historical things of significance, but the city of Lincoln doesn't have much I can think of. That's pat's quote, not mine, BTW.

  20. I did not note that. That's how dumb I am. I totally forgot that they were already getting the required books for free. In my defense I'm very tired. Loooong weekend. But that's pretty boneheaded on my part to have missed that.
