  1. Whereas Billy C may have introduced many new offensive concepts to husker nation, be did not invent or introduce the screen pass. In point of fact, one of Solich's most predictable plays was a screen to Thunder Collins on 3rd and long, often several times in a row.
  2. Interesting, Deangelo Evans was from Kansas, like Bryce Brown last year, Blake Bell, and Justin McCay this year. Will location play a factor with these guys. Certainly it used to. In the husker heyday these kids would have been far more likely to go to NU than anyplace else even to the point that the national powers would often back off. Without the pretige factor playing in NU's favor and with the apparent emergence of KU and MU these kids have other regional options. Still, if we can reclaim our place among the elite, they would probably play for the big dog in their own back yard as often as not.
  3. A screen pass refers to a screened receiver, one that is sheilded from tacklers, usually by the O-line. Typically behine the LOS. I beleive you're referring to a PAP to HB in the middle. This play is very effective against a D that has sold out to the pass rush. This has been a staple since teams stopped fearing our run game. In the past they would stack the box, thus limiting these opportunities but that would open a deep route, often as not a deep TE drag route could pick up 20-30 yards routinely.
  4. To quote the sandman from USC 1620 3 words SAB O TAGE.
  5. I agree location is an issue, and to say it wasn't during Osborne/Devany is completely naive. TO's staff recruited from evreywhere because they had great success and great relationships with high school coaches from coast to coast. Take a guy like Mike Rozier, for instance, do you think his first notion was to go to Lincoln Nebraska for college. I'll bet most kids in Jersey couldn't find it on a map. Osborne's staff had spent years making relationships with his coaches and NU was a prominent program, thats why they landed a guy like that. If Nu was on the beach in sunny California, they probably never would have needed to recruit New Jersey. Bottom line, USC, Florida, Texas, don't have to recruit everywhere because they have talent in their own backyard and plenty of ammenities (beaches, big cities, hoties,Hoties, and more Hoties)to encourage regional talent to stay put.
  6. I can't see a big downside to this one. The guy has a skillset we could use, starting experience and would, by neccessity, have time to be acclimated to the system. If he doesn't work out, we're not without other options. Frankly, I think it would be nice to have a change of pace QB in the system as I think Watts has the flexibility to use his talents. Also, further competition keeps Green and Co. on their toes even after Lee graduates.
  7. IMO, when Bo says he's not interested in stars, he is being honest. Bo's stratagy this last year seems to have been to been largely centered around building relationships with programs and coaching staffs that consistanly produce top tier talent and win on the feild. When a coach has these kind of relationships established, he doesn't rely on Rivals or Scouts to do his talents evaluations. This doesn't mean he wouldn't want the best players, and certainly most of the best players have high star rankings. The difference is wanting the players that you identify as best for your program instead of those identified by outside analysts. Secondly, Witt's transfer exemplifies a distaste for promises that have no basis in on field results. Sadly, many 5 stars guys would seem to expect such gaurantees simply because they have been told how great they are for so many years. It's alot easier to get a kid to learn your system, take time to develop, and ajust to college life when he doesn't have unreal expectations coming in. Futhermore, everone wants the best possible guy, but different styles and personnalities will better fit certain teams. Would a 5 star pocket quaterback have flourished in Missouri's spread offense the way Daniels did or would Tommy Frazier have succeeded playing for Spurrier in the 90's a la Wurrfield.
  8. I like the alignment, but I don't think it's fair to Texans (not UT fans) to split up all their traditional foes (remember how it felt to lose the OU game every year) or force too many long road trips for away games if it can be easily avoided. This is why adding 2 southern teams and moving the OK schools north makes sense. Less travel for fans, more familiar opponants. Keep in mind, these conferences are not just for football, even if that's all that really matters.
  9. Can't handle us anymore?? If they wanted to add TCU then bring in Utah for the North. I don't think Utah fits geographically. I know it's actually closer to the north than many Texas schools but there seems to be a mentallity that splits the country up between west of Rockies, east of Appalachians and the middle of the country. Maybe I'm just perceiving that wrong. Oddly, I've often thought that CU ended up on the wrong side of the slope.
  10. I'm a bit of a history buff myself, so I've tried to understand the Civil War as more than a racial battle. I get southern pride, and comend the convictions of south not to be under the thumb of northern industrialist of the time. That said, it isn't 1865 anymore. Displaying the stars and bars has a racial undertone in todays world, and eveyone knows it. I refuse to accept that you interpet it diffently so it's ok in your mind. Perception is reallity and if everyone around you preceives this as racist, and you certainly know this, aren't you then speaking directly to that. I know a guy at work who wears an upsidedown cross earring and has the same tatoos. Am I to beleive that he is expressing some enlightened viewpoint that I must repect and annalyze, or should I simply assume that guy is trying to start some @#$! and get that attention that his momy denied him going up. Bottom line, symbols, like words, have meaning. What you say (show) is probably what you mean. Man up and acknowledge.
  11. I had to go with Harper for his impact on that team at that time. Big difference maker on the field. Lots of good names not on the list is a testament to NU tradition
  12. Hard decision, Noonan, Smith, Parella etc all great. I went with Jason Peter only because I thought he had more impact on raising the level of play around him.
  13. I wouldn't be suprised if this isn't the last of the defections etc. Most new coaching staffs need a couple years to clean house, especailly if the previous tenant was a packrat.
  14. IMO this is a unit that despartely needs vetern leadership right now. I agree that the best guy plays period, but I hope like hell he pulls a 180 and gets his a$$ in gear.
  15. The more likely scenario to me would be that either Missouri leaves (via Big 10), or Colorado (to the Pac 10, as they seem to think their not part of the midwest/plains anyway) neccessitating the addition of a team to fill the vaid which could also lead to realignment.
  16. Actually, I think the biggest conference right now is the MAC at 13. I could be wrong. The problem with expansion is that the conference need more northern power. The only teams that seem to fit the Big 12 profile (size, tradition, geography) in the north are IMO. Colorado State (not a strong add) Wyoming (see above) Arkansas (probaly an excellent fit but more likely a southern conf team) Norte Dame (I always thought they would be a good fit but the fighting anacronisms would never yeild their special place as the de facto kings of college football) To me it would seem like anyone else would be a big stretch. So......if they are to expand, it would only seem logical it would have to be with southern (read as Texas) teams hopefully with a realignment of the Oklahoma schools to the north. Which would largely solve the underlying problem of a weak north division and probably help the big boys of the south by easeing their in division schedule. having said all that...............NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. The no huddle offense was evolved for the 2 minute drill. Obviously in it's original format it would be both exhausting and confusing. However, those programs that use it as a core philosiphy have adapted it, Iowa State has had neither the time or personnel to run the scheme effectively against big 12 competition (which the like of Rice would not be facing). People often forget how difficult it is to swicth offensive philosiphies overnight. Last years attempts at option play would have looked embarassing by the standards of earlier husker teams, and as I recall the swicth to west coast principles wasn't exactly painless either. Bottom line we need to adapt to the strenths of our team, both in tersm of personnel and coaching. I for one trust this staff to do just that.
  18. I agree we have enough talent to run no huddle reasonably well, I just don't think we can afford to get into shoot outs with Ttech,Ou, et al. I do think no huddle is especially effective as an immediate audible device which allows a QB to take advantage of personnel mismatches and defensive miscues. I also believe that as Big 12 teams evolve to face pass happy offenses, we may be able to take advantage of faster (translation smaller linebackers) by being more physical and utilizeing reverses and trap plays ala 1990's.
  19. LINES,LINES,LINES football teams live and die in the trenchs. This is an area we need constant quality depth. We also need an Impact receiver, we certainly don't need to waste schollies on a half dozen 4th and 5th receivers like we have been for oh say 5 years.
  20. Correction, Iowa State does not suck by proxy. The do quite well sucking all by them selves.
  21. Hugh USC fan, Kevin and Mike'l get that sports talk shows have to be entertaining as well as sports related. I like Perrault as a change of pace back, and will miss him. By the way, I wonder why he seems able to get more ex-huskers on his show than on USC. Or, maybe that's just my imagination.
  22. Be careful what you wish for. OU's talent pool in very different from our own. A fast moving short Time Of Possesion gameplan was a big part of Callahan's problem. It doen't matter how good a defense is, noone can defend an even average opponant for 45 minutes.
  23. I can't help but wonder if ,in the long run, an injury to a true freshmen quarterback might ultimately benifit both the team and the player. The expectations on this kid right know seem to be just north of messiah, right up there with Curt Dukes and Harrison Beck. An injury at this point may just be enough to convince him and husker nation to be patient through a red shirt year. conversly, I think it's telling that Ebke moved to safety, that sure doesn't leave alot of choice at QB
