My wife and I did 2 days of landscaping work at our house. Moved 2 tons of fill dirt, 2 1/2 tons of river rock, and 16 rolls of sod. Physical labor sucks, but it saved me about $2,000.
I made the decision to do the landscaping on our own, after getting a bid by a landscaper. I figured I could do the grunt work. I will give props to my wife for being out there helping me, even on Mother's Day.
I do a lot of landscaping and yardwork myself. On some big projects (like laying sod) I've picked up a couple of day laborers to help out. They worked for $10 or $12/hr in cash, IIRC. It's worth it.
