oviedol55
I posted this on Huskers Illustrated. Hope you enjoy... Well since we saw Herbstreit totally melt down and nearly burst into tears like a 7 year old who didn't get what he wanted for Christmas, I've decided to compare one of the teams that he said should've made been in the finals (04 USC) to our 95 team. I swear, sometimes these guys are oblivious to the fact that football was actually played before the new millennium, even if it was as recent as the mid-90s. Anyways, here's what I got... USC in 2004 had 5 games decided by less than 14 points. Unranked Virginia Tech (11), @ unranked Stanford (3), #9 California (6), @ unranked Oregon State (8), @ unranked UCLA (5). Nebraska's closest game in 1995 was decided by 14, against unranked Washington State. They had one decided by 23 (@ #5 Colorado) and one decided by 24 (#6 Kansas State). They had no other games decided by less than 37 (their national championship blowout of Florida was their fifth closest game of the season). USC gets most of their publicity because they blew out Oklahoma. Nebraska blew out Florida by more points (62-24, 38 points) than USC beat Oklahoma (55-19, 36 points). Florida's 1995 team is considered one of its best ever. I'm pretty sure Oklahoma's 2004 team won't. USC also got big publicity because they did it back-to-back. Nebraska also won their second in a row in 1995, but they were undefeated in 1994 and beat a favored 1-loss Miami team, complete with Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp, in the Orange Bowl: their own hometown. USC went 12-1 and beat a Michigan team that went 10-3. Two years before 1995, the Huskers lost one game, in the National championship to Florida State by 2 points. In 2002, the Trojans lost 2 regular season games, to Washington State and Kansas State. 2004 USC @ Virginia Tech…W 24-13 vs. Colorado State…W 49-0 @ Brigham Young…W 42-10 @ Stanford…W 31-28 vs. #9 California…W 23-17 vs. #19 Arizona State…W 45-7 vs. Washington…W 38-0 @ Washington State…W 42-12 @ Oregon State…W 28-20 vs. Arizona…W 49-9 vs. Notre Dame…W 41-10 @ UCLA…W 29-24 Orange Bowl: vs. #3 Oklahoma…W 55-19 Average Scoring Margin: 38.2 - 13 (25.2 Margin of Victory) Average Scoring Margin vs. Top 25: 41 – 14.3 (26.7 Margin of Victory) Average Top 25 Opponent Ranking (Final Polls): 10.3 (3 Teams; 2 home, 1 neutral site) Average Yards Per Game: 449.1 Average Yards Given Up Per Game: 279.3 1995 Nebraska @ Oklahoma State…W 64-21 @ Michigan State…W 50-10 vs. Arizona State…W 77-28 vs. Pacific…W 49-7 vs. Washington State…W 35-21 vs. Missouri…W 57-0 vs. #6 Kansas State…W 49-25 @ #5 Colorado…W 44-21 Iowa State…W 73-14 @ #9 Kansas…W 41-3 Oklahoma…W 37-0 Fiesta Bowl vs. #2 Florida…W 62-24 Average Scoring Margin: 53.2 - 14.5 (38.7 Margin of Victory) Average Scoring Margin vs. Top 25: 49.0 – 18.3 (30.7 Margin of Victory) Average Top 25 Opponent Ranking (Final Polls): 5.5 (4 teams; 1 home, 2 away, 1 neutral site) Average Yards Per Game: 556.3 Average Yards Given Up Per Game: 294.1 I think it's safe to say Nebraska would win this one. I'm not saying The '71 Huskers would've beaten the '95 Huskers, but they would've had the best shot of anyone to "Hang" with them. Quote Link to comment

I agree with the 71 Huskers being able to hang with the 95 Huskers for a while, but there is no team in the history of college football that could beat the 95 Huskers. Including the used trojans Quote Link to comment

What brings it up again? Quote Link to comment
rawhide
The balance of the 95 team was phenomenal. And like was stated most of the D and O 1st string were warming the pine in the 3rd Q. And the talent didn't drop off much. GBR Quote Link to comment
