What kind of qb's are they?? what year??

4 *Austen Arnaud, 6-3, 222, So.

8 *Phillip Bates, 6-2, 209, So.

Bret Meyer started the last 48 Iowa State games, dating back to the 2004

season. But Chizik and McFarland made sure that hometown (Ames)

product Austen Arnaud got meaningful playing time last season. Arnaud

was a positive force in his Cyclone debut, figuring large in Iowa State’s

win over Kansas State by completing five-of-seven passes for 130 yards

and rushing for 19 yards. With good size, he is not afraid to run and can

dish out what he gets when being tackled. Arnaud, whose father John

was a standout ISU defensive back in the early 1980s, completed 20-of-

37 passes for 267 yards in six games. He will be the No. 1 signal-caller

heading into spring football.

Arnaud will have competition from a man with such overt talent that

Chizik used him as a receiver last season because he wanted to have him

on the field. Phillip Bates caught five passes for 73 yards in 2007. He

made one of the season’s biggest plays against Iowa, demonstrating his

athletic ability. In closing minutes of the Iowa game, with Iowa State

trailing 13-12, Meyer threw up a ball toward Bates in heavy traffic. Bates

made a great catch going up to make the reception to set up the winning

field goal.

Bates set a school record in just two seasons at Omaha (Neb.) North High

School, throwing for 2,963 yards. He also ran for nine touchdowns. Chizik

will monitor Bates’ progress in the spring before making a decision on his

future. You can bet that the sophomore will be on the field somewhere in

2008.

It sounds like the Blackshirts have powers comparable to Wonderboy

It never hurts to have the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away...

with mind bullets!!

Riggah-goo-goo, riggah-goo-goo!

That's telekinesis, Kyle.

I was thinking more of the power of flight....

Does that do anything for you?

Who is Iowa State's qb going to be this year anyway??

Phil Bates or Austin Arnaud...I'm pulling for Bates.

So much for Bret Myers, eh?

He graduated after four years of faithful service.

I thought he had another year... shows you know what I know about ISU. So how are the facilities coming along in Ames? We are coming up there this year for the best tailgating in the country, tell me I have that much right!!

Ames is always one big tailgate party and it'll probably be huge for NU...as for the facilities, we're hauling in 5 more porta-potties for the home games so you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just don't throw anything at the guy holding the down marker. I heard he once killed a man.... <_<

If I could come to the game I would have a sign that says. "I Cheer for the Down Marker Guy! GO CY!!!!"

I heard he killed a man too, using only his thumb. :box

From a LJS article with Marvin Sanders:

“Rickey knows a lot of football,” Sanders says. “Sometimes you look at Rickey and people think, ‘Well, he’s not getting it.’ That’s not it. Rickey’s so eager to make plays. He believes in the old philosophy: tackle the man with the football. But Rickey knows football. I don’t want to throttle Rickey’s excitement, but I just want to get him to understand that he doesn’t have to make every play.”

During practice on Friday, Thenarse put a hit on Niles Paul that knocked the helmet off the receiver.

Sanders smiles when recalling the scene. “That hit he made, he was totally out of position, but he made a heck of hit. That’s what Rickey wants to do. So like I told Rickey: ‘I want you to keep that aggressiveness, but you’re supposed to be over here.’
