Husker_Power
Huskers get first commit for 2009-10 It took Walter Roese only five weeks to use his international connections and lure a recruit to the Nebraska men's basketball team. Vander Joaquim, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound power forward from Angola, has orally committed to the Huskers, becoming the first member of coach Doc Sadler's 2009-10 recruiting class. Roese, hired as a Nebraska assistant on May 29, recruited Joaquim to San Diego, where Roese previously served as an assistant. Joaquim, who will be a senior at Christian High School in El Cajon, Calif., had originally committed to San Diego in February. Joaquim averaged 20.8 points last season for El Cajon Christian. He's also played for the Angolan national team. Joaquim made ESPN's Top 100 list of 2009 recruits. He's ranked No. 94. The Web site refers to Joaquim as "arguably the best-kept secret on the West Coast." UCLA, Arizona and Washington were also showing strong interest after Joaquim's initial commitment to San Diego. Writes ESPN: "In a nutshell, Joaquim oozes upside. He has the ideal length, athleticism and savvy to be a high-major 4. He gets most of his points off of tip-ins, dunks and mid-range jump shots. His back-to-the-basket game is raw, but he has great hands and appears to be very coachable." Joaquim, who can sign a national letter of intent in November, would fill one of at least three scholarships that will open after 2008-09. Joaquim couldn't be reached for comment. KansasHusker
This is a huge commit. He is a great talent and in the area that we need most. Can't wait to see him on the court for us. Quote Link to comment

T-BONE
Great pick up for us, but hopefully he stays with us and don't decommit like he did with San Diego. Quote Link to comment
Dhuskers
Great pick up for us, but hopefully he stays with us and don't decommit like he did with San Diego. he was recruited though by the San Diego Assistant that left for Nebraska...if the coach the recruits you leaves and there's opportunity to follow then why not? I doubt he leaves us too, the only way I see him leaving is if he starts building more hype and gets known better nationally. Quote Link to comment
