The much talked-about Cody Green is on campus, but won’t be participating when Nebraska’s spring practices begin on Wednesday because of a minor hip injury.

Husker coach Bo Pelini said it is “not a very serious injury,” but the true freshman quarterback would miss at least the first weekend of practices.

“It’s like a soft-tissue deal that he just aggravated,” Pelini said at a Tuesday news conference. “It’s just something that needs a little bit of time to make sure it heals properly. It was just kind of a freak accident when he was lifting. … He’ll be out there pretty quick we anticipate. We just don’t want to rush him back.

Perhaps even more important is news that junior offensive lineman Jaivorio Burkes will miss the entire spring with a medical condition. Burkes, who started four games for NU in 2008, had issues with his blood pressure prior to last season, but Pelini said this is a different circumstance.

As for Green’s injury, Pelini said doctors told him it rates as a one on a scale of one to 10. The coach doesn’t see it as a major setback.

“He’s really a high school senior. He really shouldn’t be here anyway. So the way I look at it, it’s really a bonus that he’s here at all,” Pelini said. “The most important thing is that it’s not long-term.”

Washington to QB: With Patrick Witt departed, the Huskers needed more depth at quarterback. Enter Latravis Washington.

The junior from Bradenton, Fla., is going to try a move from linebacker to quarterback this spring, Pelini said. Washington has seen limited action at linebacker and played quarterback in high school, even attending an NU quarterback camp.

“It’s something he wanted to try and we wanted to look at,” Pelini said. “He’s got a big arm. We needed another arm. We just wanted to see what it looks like.”

NU now has four quarterbacks entering spring ball: Zac Lee, Kody Spano, Green and Washington.

Pelini said Watson would rotate the quarterbacks like he always has, and that it would be pretty much equal reps between them. “Guys will get plenty of snaps,” Pelini said. “If anything, we’ll want to tailor them back a little bit.”

Levorson leaves team: Pelini confirmed that defensive back John Levorson has left the team.

The Crete native and the Journal Star’s 2008 Boys Prep Athlete of the Year was part of the 2008 recruiting class. He redshirted last fall.

Others no longer on the roster are Justin Rogers, Major Culbert and Austin Stafford. Pelini said Nick Covey is on a medical redshirt.

More QB chatter: Pelini was asked what level of interest the coaching staff has in Robert Marve, the quarterback who is transferring from Miami and has counted NU among the schools he is interested in.

Are the Huskers interested back?

“With Patrick leaving, it kind of leaves a hole in the class,” Pelini said. “So if it was the right guy, and the right situation, the right kid, it’d be something we’d be interested in possibly. Specifically him, I don’t know. But we’ll see how it plays out.”

Eyeing some no-huddle?: Senior center Jacob Hickman was asked about some speculation that NU might dabble in some no-huddle offense this year like many other teams in the Big 12 are doing.

“We might see some of that in the spring,” he said. “We’ll see.”

Hickman’s opinion?

“I’m not a big fan of the no-huddle. I don’t really like it. I know it changes the pace of the game. But I just kind of like the idea of the O-line coming up to the line and everybody getting in their positions. It’s the way football’s supposed to be played.”
