Husker_Power
S. Florida job attractive to many LJS Blog Via a public records request, The Tampa Tribune newspaper released names of coaches who applied for the South Florida head coaching position that ultimately went to Skip Holtz. Among the applicants: Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson; Joe Moglia, a volunteer on the 2009 Husker staff and former former chief executive officer of TD Ameritrade; and former Husker split end/return man Tyrone Hughes, now a Louisiana Storm (semi-pro) assistant head coach. The list of applicants painted a broad stroke across the coaching landscape, according to the Tribune story which can be found here. It's no surprise the position drew widespread interest because of the wealth of high school talent in the area and the fact South Florida plays in a BCS conference that is manageable in terms of overall strength. Watson, 50, in the past has expressed a desire to be a head coach again (he was head coach at Southern Illinois from 1994-96). Quote Link to comment
Fuzzy
I find it funny that some people who commented on this article (not on this board), implied Watson's reason for actively wanting to leave NU was because of money. Although it may have played a part in his decision to apply. I wouldn't be surprised if a little bit of could have been NU fans talking about firing him during the 2009 season. Quote Link to comment
carlfense
I wouldn't have been terribly upset if he'd have gotten the job. Hopefully he proves my feelings about him wrong this season. Quote Link to comment
killer cacti
No big deal. Just an OC looking to become a HC... Quote Link to comment
ESPY
What OC is not looking to move up to HC? That South Florida job definitely would've had its perks - recruiting & warm climate - and more than likely, Wats would've done quite well there, especially considering it's a BCS-AQ conference other than the Big 12. If nothing else, this proves our OC won't be an OC much longer. The guy is 50, prime age to become the HC somewhere, & he has lots of experience. In the scope of things, maybe it's better we didn't land as many offensive recruits this year. IMHO Watson will get hired as the HC before the 2011 season. Quote Link to comment
Incandenza
USF would be a great job. I'd hate to see him go, but wouldn't blame him one bit for wanting to go to a place like South Florida. Haven't heard from Tyrone Hughes in a while. Quote Link to comment
HuskerMack
Can ever blame a guy for wanting to be a head coach some where ,there are alot of great offensive guys out there that would love to come to Nebraska. Quote Link to comment
knapplc
I agree with the majority that it would be a no-brainer for Wats to apply for this job. Further, Bo has indicated that he'll help any of his coaches progress up the coaching ladder if he can (don't have a link, but he said this around the time Ekeler was interviewing last year). It's part of the business. Bo has a huge rolodex (or a Blackberry, if you're younger than 40) full of coach's phone numbers across the country. He'll have a replacement for any guy who leaves within a couple of weeks, if not sooner. Quote Link to comment
REDSTEEL
In my opinion he needs to keep trying for other Headcoaching jobs no matter what division their in. I'll be glad to reminisce about the great things he did for the program after he leaves. (after that 1 second I'll move along.) Quote Link to comment

HuskerfaninOkieland
This probably isn't the first time he's applied for a HC job...and it won't be the last Quote Link to comment

South_O_Husker
I would like to see Scott Frost back wearing scarlet and cream, not necessarily as OC but in some capacity. As for Watson's replacement (hypothetically speaking) I hope it is someone who uses the "I" as a base formation. Let Watson take the spread with him WHEN he goes. Quote Link to comment
