bad apples

You know what they say about a few bad apples ...

Apparently not all Husker fans adhered to Tom Osborne and Bo Pelini's pleas last week to treat the Hook'ems with kindness and respect.

A Waverly man apparently didn't like the looks of a 6-foot-long set of longhorns mounted on the grille of Texas fan Patrick Flinn's 2004 Cadillac Escalade. So the Waverly man, apparently angered by the Husker loss, tore one of the horns clean off the Escalade.

Flinn declined to press charges, according to LJS reporter Cory Matteson's story.

In addition, Flinn said his younger brother's burnt-orange Jeep was vandalized outside the Council Bluffs, Iowa, casino where the group of Longhorns fans stayed.

These obviously were isolated incidents. I'm sure there were countless displays of kindness toward the Texans.

I commented about this on the LJS. I can't believe they ran a story about this douchebag. I talked to at least a dozen Texas fans Saturday, and every single one of them said they'd been treated very well by Husker fans.

What the hell is the point of running an article about the one or two percent of dumbasses out there who do dumbass things? It's not representative of our fans.

Sometimes the JournalStar baffles me. This is one of those times.

Hey, thats Iowa's problem, not ours. We cant help it if some bad apple Hawkeyes or Cyclones went on a booze filled rampage through the casino parking lots after some tough losses at the slots.

Because the LJS is in the business of reporting news, and this was certainly newsworthy.

Exactly. This is definitely news worthy, especially since the outlet reporting the story is a local paper.

If this would have been the other way around people would be boo-hooing about and saying how bad the UT fans were. I mean come on people actually blamed that Mizzou fan a couple years ago because his face came into contact with Kellen Huston’s fist.

Yawn. It's newsworthy as the sun rising in the East. This happens everywhere, every game, every Saturday.

Did you write an angry e-mail to the LJS a few years ago when it was reported that NU fans got their tires slashed at their Hotel in Lawrence saying how that is not a worthy story to report on? I be the answer to that is no.

It’s a Lincoln paper, they were probably looking for a story about the way fans were treated in Lincoln. They came across these 2 instances and like any other newspaper in America reported the bad stories. I’m sure their Sunday paper also had a back-patting article about how nice NU fans were to UT fans.

Look, in the east... what's that glow at the end of night?

“It’s a light on the sewage treatment plant!”

It is a blog. What is news worthy more stories about Cameron Meredith’s moustache?

This article and accompanying blog is a misrepresentation of what happened Saturday. For every guy who ripped the horns off a car or shouted at Niles Paul (OWH article) there are 10,000 fans who showed respect and hospitality to Texas fans. Focusing on the negativity sucks. There was a lot more positive that came out of the day than negative.

One of the Texas fans I talked to - and shook hands with in parting - told me how all the Austin TV stations were saying that Longhorns fans heading to Lincoln last week had better be prepared, because we weren't the congenial hosts we've been in the past. They needed to look out for themselves. This guy was spitting mad about that, saying that he had never been treated nicer at a game than he was that day. We talked football, we talked players, we talked about the future, and we parted amiably. I had a similar interaction with every other Texas fan I ran across.

That's the story I would have liked to see. "Hospitality reigns amid defeat" would have been a good headline, with a paragraph or two dedicated to the inevitable douchebags who ripped horns off of cars. Focus on the MORE newsworthy story, but cover all angles.

Why is that so hard?
