TT Short routes vs McKeon

The following is from rojo on another thread:

McKeon. Linebacker productivity. Quickness.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A foot injury slowed McKeon through Spring ball. It wasn't until August that Corey emerged as the top Middle Linebacker.

After four games Corey McKeon is the #5 Tackler in the Big 12.

Barrett Ruud’s 2004 performance at MIKE made him a Round #2 NFL draft selection. How is McKeon doing against that standard?

I. Through four games: Barrett Ruud in ’04 & McKeon in ’05.

Some similarities:

--Barrett: 29 solo tackles + 17 assists

--Corey: 26 solo tackles + 10 assists

Some differences:

--Barrett: 5 Tackles-for-Loss, 1 Sack, 1 Quarterback-hurry, 0 Pass-break-ups.

--Corey: 10 Tackles-for-Loss, 5 Sacks, 6 Quarterback-hurries, 2 Pass break-ups.

II. Speed/Quickness.

We all saw McKeon run down ISU’s wide receiver R. J. Sumrall on that 60-yd pass play. Middle Linebackers aren’t supposed to be able to do that. Barrett wouldn’t have.

III. McKeon and Top Linebackers in the Big 12.

A. Big 12 Linebacker Productivity: Average Tackles/Game (after 4 games)

1. Nick Reid, KU (Sr): 12.0 average tackles/game

2. Justin Warren, TAM (Jr): 9.5

3. Matt Robertson, ISU (Jr): 9.2

4. Corey McKeon, NU (So): 9.0

5. Tim Dobbins, ISU (Sr): 8.5

6. Aaron Harris, UT (Sr): 8.4

7. Lee Foliaki, TAM (Sr): 8.2

8. Rufu Alexander, OU (Jr): 8.2

9. Zach Latimer, OU (Jr) 8.0

10 Arch McDaniel, TAM (Sr): 7.8

11 Thad Washington, CU (Jr): 6.8

12 Bo Ruud, NU (So): 6.5

B. Big 12 Linebacker Speed/Quickness:

If one takes “Tackles-for-Loss," "Pass Break-ups" and "Quarterback-hurries" as measures of a linebacker's speed & quickness, that group of 12 Linebackers above rearranges to this:

1. Corey McKeon: 18 (10 TFL + 2 Breaks-ups +6 QB-hurries)

2. Rufu Alexander, OU: 14 (6 +4 +4)

3-4 Nick Reid, KU: 11 (10 +1 +0)

3-4 Tim Dobbins, ISU: 11 (5 +3 +3)

5. Bo Ruud, NU: 9 (3 +1 +5)

6. Aaron Harris, UT: 7 (6 +0 +1)

7-8 Zach Latimer, OU: 5 (1 +2 +2)

7-8 Matt Robertson, ISU: 5 (3 +2 +0)

9-10 Justin Warren, TAM: 4.5 (3.5 +0 +1)

9-10 Lee Foliaki, TAM: 4.5 (2.5 + 2 +0)

11 Thad Washington: 4 (3 +0 +1)

12 Arch McDaniel, TAM: 1.5 (1.5 +0 +0)

The Bottom Line:

1) It's been a surprise to Coz, us fans (and perhaps to Brandenburgh & Dillard), but Corey McKeon has emerged as somewhat special.

2) He’s young and inexperienced. (There are only two sophomores on the lists above: Corey McKeon and Bo Ruud.) At some point in his calling of defensive adjustments at the line-of-scrimmage, that inexperience will show.

3) Fun to watch... and efffective---kind of like the whole of the Blackshirts have been so far.

4) Let's note: Even though we've been largely looking at McKeon here, Bo Ruud is not that far off. Two sophomores....

Just some things to think about….

Pretty hard to pick Ruud over McKeon in my opinion. Ruud did not have a team playing with heart and as a cohesive unit. In fact, i think some of the defensive players were playing against the coaches. When you are the only one on the team putting 100%, it shows. I personally have respect and admiration for both guys. They play(ed) with heart

My only coment would be we saw Barret really play as a senior. I think McKeon is better as sophmore than Barret was. Bo is very close too. I think we are looking at two All American LB's in the very near future, barring injury. What a problem to have.

I look for both of them to be blowing the short routes and putting a hurting on Henderson. If that happens we win this game going away.

Talk about speed, when Bullocks missed that open field tackle and then the ISU reciever ran about 40 yards afterwards, you know who tracked him down....MCKweon, the dudes fast.
