The future of Unions

Recommended Posts

With the recent failed recall election in Wisconsin, it appears unions in the state (and possibly nationally)are bleeding members. I dont have an exact figure or link, but last I heard some of the larger Unions have lost upwards of 50% of current members due to the Walker legislation and the recall efforts. So...my question is this, Are Unions as they currently exist an idea/practice that is slowly becoming extinct and is it possible for them to change to deal with the changing national and global enviroment that exists?

In my opinion the decline of the Unions are one of the primary reasons our economy has suck to where it is. It is also a primary reason for the income inequity. Too many stupid, shortsighted people falling for GOP propaganda when it comes to Unions. If it were not for them, our working class would look like China's.

But hey, thats what the GOP wants, and it would be good for the costs of big business and the pocketbooks of the ultra wealthy. And that is all that really matters right?

You're entitled to your opinion however stupid it is. For our economy to "suck" to such levels says more about you than our economy. Let me give you some advice bro....don't count on a union job to give you 60 years of excessive pay and benes cuz that ship has sailed and as much as you hate it, that's the truth end of story. Learn to manage your career for real and be prepared to provide high value every day and year to your employer otherwise be prepared to be unemployed / low pay with a crap retirement.

Unions are nothing more than another form of excessive power such as business monopoly / oligopoly which was ineffectively addressed some 80 years ago. Excessive government power is far worse and has never been address/checked in the history of the US.

Anyway back to unions they'll continue to die in the US since they always produce globally inefficient output and they aren't dying fast enough if you are committed to US global financial excellence. To the OP who didn't google anything to exactly know what's going on recently....I think what you're sort of "knowing" is that Wisconsin state government employee participation in union membership has quickly dropped by more than 40% since now those employees don't any longer have automatic union dues deductions from their paychecks (and think about that comrades.....until recently they ALL PAID union dues whether or not they wanted to do so....comrades). For all you D's (that means socialist there is no distinction whatsoever) that like to claim the US is a free country well you don't know squat about anything (as always) but you should carefully consider 40+ percent of "uninion members" immediately CHOOSING to NOT be in your thug union when they had the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE (you libs love choice so love it more or reject it entirely lol idiots).

Sieg Heil !!!

Yes OP, Unions are on the way out and have been for a while. I think their decline is due to a couple of things,

1. Decline in Association in general, the 'bowling alone' effect....people just aren't joiners anymore, of anything, at least not like they used to be.

2. They're a victim of their own success: Unions rose to prominence in reaction to very real problems with Labor. Their effectiveness in combatting horrid working conditions and oppressive wages/terms was so great that those problems, at least upon the scale we once saw, are now a distant memory. They were absolutely necessary in improving the condition of workers back a century or so ago. Their victories, along with advances in technology and the standard of living, have made it so that the everyman no longer feels it necessary to his survival to organize on such terms. The necessity just isn't there. Unions themselves are failing because the causes championed by Unions were wildly successful.

You're half right and of course as a D always D you see only the D. But the unions are not only dying because they succeeded they are also and MORE SO dying because they are run by always corrupt always D (ALWAYS) thug bosses and that (thankfully still) is not the American way.

Grow up pal. You don't want to know anything I have to teach and you can learn nothing from me. You're a lifer loser same as BC. Try to ask a serious honest question and trust me I do know how hard that is for a lifer NTY MSNBCer. It's near impossible for you but if you actually pull it off I'll probably answer.
