NUance
Ninth Circuit to DEA: putting a gun to an 11-year-old's head is not OKBy Mark Frauenfelder at 1:46 pm Monday, Jun 18 www.boingboing.net The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals told the DEA that holding a gun to an 11-year-old girl's head constitutes “intentional infliction of emotional distress,” and they should stop doing it. No doubt the DEA will appeal the ruling. At 7 a.m. on January 20, 2007, DEA agents battered down the door to Thomas and Rosalie Avina’s mobile home in Seeley, California, in search of suspected drug trafficker Louis Alvarez. Thomas Avina met the agents in his living room and told them they were making a mistake. <snip> Next they went to the 11-year-old’s room. The girl was sleeping. Agents woke her up by shouting “Get down on the f'ing ground.” The girl’s eyes shot open, but she was, according to her own testimony, “frozen in fear.” So the agents dragged her onto the floor. While one agent handcuffed her, another held a gun to her head. Moments later the two daughters were carried into the living room and placed next to their parents on the floor while DEA agents ransacked their home. After 30 minutes, the agents removed the children’s handcuffs. After two hours, the agents realized they had the wrong house—the product of a sloppy license plate transcription --and left. LINK Sounds like a bunch of incompetent DEA turds with over inflated egos. Which is about par for the course in the DEA. Link to comment
carlfense
The DEA is out of control. Someone needs to tell them that they lost the war on drugs a long time ago. 5 Link to comment
rawhide
It's just prohibition with a different time frame. I bet the same thing happened back in the prohibition days too. Human nature being what it is. Link to comment

They basically operate like some independent, sovereign entity, setting up coups and disposing one warlord/kingpin for another that is more "friendly" to their (the DEA) own agenda. All done in completely opaque maneuvering. They don't qualify or authorize anything with the public that funds them. And the amount of money we bleed out annually for their completely feckless endeavors is inexcusable. Link to comment

Ha ha! Yeah, the Elián González thing. What a debacle that was. One of the most visible news stories in the whole U.S., reporters camped out on the lawn. And the feds bust in to the house in riot gear with guns drawn. What were they going to do if Elián's family didn't hand him over, shoot the place up? What a bunch of jackasses. Link to comment

Count 'Bility
I can't determine what's sadder. The fact that the agents did such a thing, or that it took the courts 5 1/2 years to determine and relay to the agency that it was wrong. Man, we are so screwed. Link to comment
