BIGREDIOWAN
One of our officers, who is a HUGE deer hunter, lives in Madison County here in Iowa. He says they found 200 dead along the river in the area. Apparently it's Midge Flies in the water from the drought. The larva is in the standing water, the deer drink the standing water and it eats them from the inside out and they are dead within 48 hours. Don't think I'll be going deer hunting this year. carlfense
Pretty bad around my farm. About a dozen dead so far . . . and those are just the ones I've stumbled upon by accident. In fact, one doe wasn't quite dead yet but she was awfully close. Expect that number to hit 100 or so before we get a hard enough freeze to kill the bugs. Yikes. 1 Quote Link to comment

95huskers
i havent seen any dead deer. but my dad went out up by norfolk and said that the land owner was out on the river in his air boat and saw many deer dead and my dad said he had one right below his stand dead. I checked my trail cameras saturday afternoon but didnt see anything while out there. I wasnt really looking though. But no major river in the area either... who knows. This doesnt sound good though. hskerholic
What we need an early freeze one night to kill all the midge flies/larva. Quote Link to comment

carlfense
Talked to one Nebraska game warden today who estimates approximately 40% mortality in his northern Nebraska area. Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
There are a lot of people very concerned about this in my area. Along with this, they are concerned that the drought has left pastures so short that there isn't much for them to eat over the winter. Pheasant population could be decimated for the same reason.
