Mavric
Melanie Keil started only five matches for the Nebraska indoor volleyball team as a freshman, but has now earned a spot on the Huskers’ No. 1 pair for the sand volleyball season. Nebraska lost three of its top four sand players from last season. Keil has been paired with freshman Justine Wong-Orantes during the sand season. Her blocking and quick attacks at the net complement Wong-Orantes, who plays great defense and places shots all over the court. Keil and Wong-Orantes helped the Huskers to their first dual win of the season Wednesday, as Nebraska beat Arizona State 3-2 in Tempe, Ariz. The dual came down to the final set of the final match. Keil and Wong-Orantes rallied to win the last two sets for a 16-21, 21-17, 15-11 victory against Bianca Arellano and Bethany Jorgensen. Nebraska assistant coach Dan Meske said Keil has been the surprise of the sand season. Wong-Orantes needs to play with a player who can block all the time, and Keil has filled that role.
