The implication: If they didnt pay up, they would be stuck in the slow lane. What followed has been the longest, most sustained campaign of Internet activism in history, one that the little guys appear to have won. On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission is expected to vote to regulate the Internet as a public good. Link to comment
ColoNoCoHusker
Nice win for the internet for the time being IF it goes through Now hopefully the Comcast/TWC deal gets killed... Link to comment
strigori
I think it will go through the FCC. What needs to have close eyes kept on it is with the GOP who have been crying that this is over regulation, and Telecoms should get to do whatever they want. Link to comment
VectorVictor
The battle has been won, but the war rages on Nice to see that something in favor of the customer can win out in spite of the derp, doublespeak, and flat-out lies and misrepresentation from our tea-bagging friends and their ilk. Saunders
I like how people blame right wingers for this when the President appointed a Telco lobbyist as the FCC chairman. Until people realize that neither Republicans or Democrats truly have the people as their main concern, and not corporations, we're f'd. Link to comment

However it IS only one side arguing that the internet should be fundamentally changed to whatever travesty of dystopian future world the telecoms want to create. The Telco guy just pissed off the industry he used to work for. Link to comment

There may be more on one side, but both are arguing it. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2014/09/09/two-top-democrats-push-back-against-fccs-net-neutrality-plan/ The fact is, both the major political parties in the US pander to their corporate donor base. There's been some back peddling as the public has become more informed, but I don't really trust any of them. Link to comment
zoogs
We need maybe some better built-in protection against corporate and moneyed interests. Government should not be large, but it should also protect the people. Having parties and politicians with conflicting interests is not protecting the people. @saunders, that Sep 14 article has a proposal by FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who is a Democrat, but also a cable lobbyist as you mentioned. The pushback here by the "two prominent Democrats" -- Leahy and Pelosi -- are in favor of net neutrality, right? Against the FCC's original plans? Link to comment
strigori
All of the politicians need to be wary about trying to legislate against Net Neutrality also. Thus far the tech companies have held back the 'nuclear option' which could swing elections over this issue. Google, Twitter, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and many others have so far not gone into a full court press over the issue. As they have the means to be in front of more eyes than any amount of money the telecoms could spend. The comments to the FCC were about 99% in favor of Net Neutrality. This is something that transcends any party line. Link to comment
VectorVictor
Looks like the current GOP residents are dead set on acting like paid for telecom whores and are pushing forward with the Orwellian-named 'Internet Freedom Act'. It's so damn sad and pathetic that these politicians like Blackburn aren't even trying to hide the fact that they're bought and paid for by AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast (among others). Regardless, it looks like the next round in this fight for the future of the Internet is underway... Link to comment
strigori
Go ahead GOP, keep pushing this. See what happens in '16. Keep pushing and the tech companies might decide to unleash the nuclear option. Think about this, if Google, Apple, Netflix, Amazon and so on decide they want people to see something, it will be seen. Thus far they have done things the standard way. Want to find an issue that will pull younger voters out to the polls? This would be one. The comments to the FCC regarding Net Neutrality were about 99% pro-net neutrality. If you are against this, you work for a telecom, or have been bought and paid for. Link to comment

The 'bagger-jacked GOP is so out of touch and so inundated with the uneducated and older Americans, that they could inevitably be lighting the match that leads to their own immolation.
