Kernal
I am on the fence with this dedicated ST coach. I'm willing to concede the importance of ST, and in theory it could make sense to have a ST coach (in reality, it's not much different from having another coach also coach ST), but we're not seeing the kind of results that are going to sell me. I suppose we should be patient with it and give it a chance to work, but goddammit, isn't anything going to look good without a bunch of waiting? I mean, throw us a bone here. I think we should have a special teams coach, as long as the special teams coach recruits. If you're only going to focus on special teams and not recruit like Read you had better make sure that your special teams is rock solid and doesn't regress from 1st to middle of the pack. I've also heard he isn't a "recruiter." But he did recruit some of the ST players- a long snapper and another kicker. I can't say with any authority one way or the other what he's doing. Our STs haven't been great, but then neither has the offense or defense. At least ST has the "excuse" of missing their pre-season All-American punt returner for half the season. I'm inclined to think that ST is suffering the same team-wide motivation problem, or whatever it is, as the O and D. Quote Link to comment
seaofred92
I'd rather donate the $500k to the Louisville basketball recruiting budget than pay Read to stay again next year 1 Quote Link to comment
Mavric
Special teams as a whole have to be better. Eight games in, the Huskers haven't broken one really long kick return all year, and you haven't really felt like they've been close to doing so. Nebraska is dead last nationally in average kick return yardage -- 14.53 yards a game. In a locker room with more than 120 options to put out there, it doesn't compute. LJS 1 Quote Link to comment
QMany
Nebraska is dead last nationally in average kick return yardage -- 14.53 yards a game. (I believe that should be yards per return, not game) I was not surprised to read this, but it is still startling. Last year we averaged 20.79 yards per return (65th of 128 teams), and only one team (Old Dominion) finished with less than 16.5 yards per return. Along with Stevenson's redshirt, we are burning money with Read. 1 Quote Link to comment
