New Bball Coach?!

Recommended Posts

People didn't know we had a baseball team 10 years ago or so. The only mention of it is when Darren Erstad was kicking the ball for the football team. I think we can win at basketball. Im not talking about national championships, but top 2 or 3 in the Big XII and births in the NCAA Tourney can and WILL happen.

Foxsports.com: Sources say Collier is Butler bound Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nebraska coach Barry Collier will interview for the Butler athletic director position on Friday and then, 24 or so hours later, he'll be inducted into the Butler Hall of Fame.

Shortly thereafter, according to sources, Collier will take the AD job and leave Lincoln.

When FOXSports.com first approached Collier nearly two weeks ago at the Peach Jam tournament down in Augusta, the Nebraska head man denied that he would be resigning anytime soon.

However, now the handwriting is on the wall. According to sources, Collier has even taken his assistant coaches off the road — a few days prior to the end of the valuable July recruiting period.

Collier, 52, is revered at Butler — where he played for two years and also compiled a 196-132 record in 11 seasons (1989-2000) and led the Bulldogs to a trio of NCAA tournament appearances.

Collier hasn't had the same level of success in football-crazed Lincoln, but he has led the Cornhuskers to a pair of postseason berths in the last three years.

The program had begun to turn around after a rough three years to begin the Collier era. Nebraska was 19-13 last season and finished in sixth place in the Big 12.

Collier is in the third year of a four-year deal, but the administration had yet to give him an extension at Nebraska — so it makes sense in a way for Collier to depart despite a salary hit that will likely have him go from making upwards of $600,000 to in the $200,000 range.

Hopefully that's true, and he will leave. Though it's late to grab a coach, it's not the worst situation either. The Huskers could grab someone in this dead period of college ball. Besides the obvious name of Rick Majerus, I've heard names like Quinn Snyder, formally of MU, and ESPN commentator Steve Lavin, formally of UCLA as names that aren't in the coaching ranks. Hopefully we'll get someone good.
