That's exactly what they do - retain records of politicians and governments for future dissemination in the name of transparency. What possible reason could they have for not retaining those DMs? Yep. That's a ridiculous response. Link to comment
BigRedBuster
Wikileaks is going to be extremely transparent about everything they can get their hands on about everyone else. In no way shape or form are they going to be transparent with who they communicate with while collecting or disseminating that information. Link to comment

They've faked and deceptively edited recordings before. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/29/project-veritas-how-fake-news-prize-went-to-rightwing-group-beloved-by-trump Quote The underhand tactics that Project Veritas adopted in its notorious takedown of the progressive network Acorn and that it later applied to media organisations has attracted growing condemnation from unexpected quarters. In 2011 Blaze, the rightwing outlet founded by Glenn Beck, investigated O’Keefe’s treatment of National Public Radio and concluded that the editing of a secretly filmed video seemed “designed to intentionally lie or mislead about the material being presented”. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/11/28/the-6-most-puzzling-aspects-of-this-james-okeefe-project-veritas-botched-sting-debacle/?utm_term=.3869fcf5ba10 https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/post-nation/wp/2017/11/27/james-okeefe-tweeted-about-his-confrontation-with-a-post-reporter-heres-what-really-happened/ http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2010/05/james_okeefe_and_friends_plead.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Veritas Quote Project Veritas is an American far-right[17] activist group founded by James O'Keefe in 2010.[22] The group uses undercover techniques to reveal supposed liberal bias and corruption[18] and is known for producing deceptively edited videos about media organizations, left-leaning groups,[30] and debunked conspiracy theories.[34] In March 2020, The New York Times published an exposé detailing Project Veritas' use of spies recruited by Erik Prince, to infiltrate "Democratic congressional campaigns, labor organizations and other groups considered hostile to the Trump agenda". The Times piece notes O'Keefe's and Prince's close links to the Trump administration, and details contributions such as a $1 million transfer of funds from an undisclosed source to support their work. The findings were based in part on discovery documents in a case brought by the American Federation of Teachers, Michigan, which was infiltrated by Project Veritas.[35] 3 Link to comment

I'm not doubting there are some not great things on the recording. The problem is who is putting it out. Veritas is the same group who have edited video of a confrontation to try to prove their story. @RedDenver is correct in wanting to wait for a more reputable source, or an entire release. O'Keefe is a known bad faith actor in his reporting. 4 Link to comment
Archy1221
Apparently, that Wikileaks tape was released previously in a Showtime documentary. Based not on the audio but a description of what's in the audio: Quote Video of a conversation that sounds a lot like the one O’Keefe describes has, however, been publicly available for a while now.
