1. I think UGA would have been significantly better without their injuries. With our lack of depth, you don't lose a 4 yr QB, an AA OL and most of the remaining OL for games at a time and expect to win. Throw in JT, KB, QE, TA and AA and I really think we were lucky to win 8. I would say the same thing if we had these next year. This year we were decimated by injuries. The most I can remember since I have been watching Husker football.
2. Didn't read the article, but watching my Cowboys implode again last night with huge TO's, I said to my wife that they look just like my Huskers. Can't get out of their own way and are the most mistake prone team in the league............
3. I am going to wait until after our bowl game before I make any comments related to my expectations for next year.
4. . Bulletin board material pasted in UGA lockers. Guaranteed. I like it. To quote Kid Rock, It ain't called cocky if you back it up. We need this swagger, this attitude, this screw you mentality. The whole let's be quiet and respectful is BS. Let their 5th year senior come out and "prove" he is good. Over compensate to show he doesn't "panic" and implode. I like it. For fans to get butt hurt over his comments ie "worried" shows how far we have fallen.
5. Yep. Would anyone actually be surprised if Bo makes these changes with the media and refuses to make coaching changes? That seems to fit him perfectly. Sad to think that we will probably have to endure at least one more season of this. This^ I was really hoping to see some changes in the off season ie staff, philosophies, even switching of responsibilities etc Even something to solidify the fan base so that it was "unified". Almost a big screw you NU. Happy New Year from the coach who knows more than anyone.
6. It is odd with all the rumors about the hot seat, being fired etc that he would think of making a decision that would so alter the "Nebraska way". It flies in the face of what the fans (you know you do) complain about. The secrecy, inability to know what is going on in the program, fans feeling the staff doesn't get "it" etc....... Saban was mentioned above. Get us 3 MNC's and you can get a lot more latitude. Continue to get blown out and you need to improve your PR big time. On a side note, I watched the Minnie Syracuse game last night and still have no idea how we lost to them. NONE.
7. the multiple you speak of in regards to Osborne is different than that of the one people are complaining of with Beck. Sure, Osborne didnt come out in an I set every play, and would often spread it out and such, but you knew what was coming with him as well. Run first. Play Action and so on. It's not the multiplicity of playcalling and formation that's the problem. It's the whole philosphy. There's no identity. Our offense is a jack of all trades, master of none unit, and when need be, there is not one single individual facet of our offense that can be fully leaned upon in any sort of critical moment. Without a 5th years senior qb with priceless experience and gamebreaking ability in his legs, Beck's total lack of identity was severely exposed this year. This. TO ran a simple offense with multiple motions and formations. Not multiple plays. His genius was the ability to disguise the plays through the "multiple" ways in which the base O could be run. TO ran the same O when Tommie went down and Brook came in and then Turman. He didn't go to try and call a completely different O. He stayed with what worked. Run, run, run, He didn't try to design a new one when Tommie graduated or Gill etc... It was the same with minute modifications. NOt whole sale change. http://sportsillustr...827/1/index.htm The above is an old article talking about NU winning games with a QB who couldn't run and one who couldn't throw. BUT TO had a game plan that all the guys knew that allowed NU to win, and win and win............. Multiple sucks. Get great at something. Stick with it. Win games. From another article: Oklahoma State Coach Pat Jones said, "With No. 11 (Turman) in there, it became an inside run drill. They just lined up and whipped us." See, TO did what NU does. He stayed with the run, didn't try to make players run an O they couldn't. They went with what worked. Why do we, under Beck, continue to abandon what works for the sake of "running our O?"
8. IMO, it comes down to quit being "multiple" and get great at something. Year 3 with Beck and I still have no idea what the hell we run. I agree with fitting the scheme to the player. This concept, IMO, has been lost on the staff. Making Martinez throw in the pocket, Ronnie trying to run etc...... Get a system and recruit for it. Implement a system and plays that the guys can do in their sleep, that won't get stuffed on 3rd and short. IMO, and I might get killed for this, our receiver and TE play is not near what we would need currently to effectively go to a pro style passing attack with a QB under center. Unsure if Beck would even know what to do with a QB under center.
9. There is a part of me that actually thinks the bold might be true. It is wishful thinking as it would throw UGA into all kinds of fits if #3 trotted onto the field, healthy, angry and ready to go out a bowl winner.
10. A healthy OL could actually give us a great chance to win this game. Sit back and run, open up the pass and fire away to our hopefully healthy receivers. Any word on TA?
11. It is also obvious that almost 50% come from the top 4. All are warm weather schools. Both per capita chart and total shares chart. The kids there can play football, outdoors, year round, in roughly the same conditions day in and day out. I would be interested to see how many of the recruits from these schools are "multi sports kids" ie football, then basketball, then baseball or track. Seems the top 4 probably have kids who, di to weather IMO, are allowed (concentrate) on football year round. Has to help. I would also gather that the top 3 are some of the most populated states (total recruits /share(GA has ATL). Larger schools, more competition probably increases the talent as kids need to be "better" to see the field.
12. Ironically, white RB's appear to be our kryptonite.........plus he appears to wear our own Superman's number. No Bueno. Penn St and Iowa's RB's both say hello. Good break down. Appreciate your info and coming on the board. Ref your receivers, I really hope we actually press your receivers at the line to allow our DL to get to Mason. 2nd full start, in a bowl game against our incredibly improving D could really work into our favor. Make him sit a little longer than he wants. also allows us to have another guy in the box for Gurley. He is a beast. IMO, our DL and LB corp is head and shoulders above last year. We actually have depth which should help us tremendously. Last year, in the 4th, our lack of depth was evident. We were gassed and y'all still had some on the tank. Gregory (DE) is a beast and is quick on passing and improving on run support. Valentine (DT) is a load and will take double teams most game. Our other DL are coming along. Thad Randle (SR DT) has been injured and playing less. Unsure if injury or our RSh Fresh and Soph guys are stepping up. LB's are improving with Anderson, Rose and Santos probably starting depending on your O sets. Misdirection and motion (particularly TE) still confuse, but are improving. Still struggle with the jet sweep. DB's are good. SJB is a physical presence and is plays angry. Evans is coming into his own and silently does his thing. Safety is improved with Leroy Alexander (IMO best open field tackler) who plays angry. Cooper is solid. OL lost our rock in Long to season ACL. Since then everyone including lucky fans have been allowed to suit up and h=give it a shot. Really, really depleted. Hopefully all others will be back. Maybe not 100% (knee strains), but 80-85%. Martinez, (all everything QB) is possible, but doubtful? Even if healthy, unless he has been practicing, he hasn't played since week 4 or 5. Tommy Armstrong, battling a ankle injury and senior walkon RKIII probably gets the start. I really haven't seen our TE's involved all season (injuries and our OC has no idea they are eligible plus Carter can't catch "yet") WR's are good. Some bad drops, but physical blockers. More so than last year. In the open field y'all half step and end up getting laid out. Turner has battled injuries most of the year. Bell has groin issues, but should be 100%. Enunwa (beast) has been off his game. Westerkamp, probably best hands on team, not a speedster, but catches. Also catches our punts. I didn't mention return them as Bo does not know that a punt can be advanced. Perhaps after the Auburn Bama game he researched that and realized that ST can advance the ball. RB's are solid. Leaned on Abdullah more down the stretch than I would have liked. he is banged up, but getting better. Cross is a bruiser who runs over folks, but seems to feel bad when he does ie doesn't truck folks when he can. Not quick, but Beck (OC) loves to use him on sweeps. I am sure more folks will post.
13. now you know why Alshon Jeffery burned us..... Against my Cowboys he truly looked like a man amongst boys. That is what an NFL receiver looks like. It was evident when we played them. Our guys, IMO, not so much.
14. These are the best group of receivers I have seen at NU. BUT they have not reached the elite level yet. Watching the NFL last week they were showing some catches saying the "good ones" routinely make the routine catches and make a few "circus" catches per game. Our guys sometimes miss the routine amd very few circus style catches. Some of the catching issues could be on the QB though in their defense.
15. And your comment added what? At least we can both agree that UGA's music is good.............
16. A short read about the salaries of NU assistants and how it ranks. Beck is up there. Both in conference and nationally. 3rd in conference and11th nationally. I figure Fish and Brown should get raises. Their guys have performed well. It's boring waiting for the bowl so I figured I'd post this......
17. I don't think this is true. The NFL is very bottom line. Look at Danny Woodhead for example, or undrafted Texas Tech alum receivers Wes Welker and Danny Amendola. There are plenty of guys who don't have the measurables who make it. But there are also plenty of the guys who don't have the measurables who don't. Why spend your prime high picks on those guys, when you can bring in a dozen of the latter category in for workouts or draft them later? I agree with this. IMO, the NFL looks at the measurables first. That is the reason some guys get all the pre-draft hype and some are relegated further down in predictions. They have the chance in the combine to impress as well as in camp, but the initial chatter is always about the guys who "look" the part. I think AA would do a great job ala Sproles, but scouts have him lower based up his size and probably his fumbles.....
18. Sadly this. Rex knocked all the "measurable's" out of the park save the 40.............. NFL is truly stuck on what a position should "look like". Hell they loved Josh Freeman and Gabbert............... They all need to pull a Peter and Wistrom. Those guys were projected 1st round top picks and came back for "unfinished business". It worked well for them and the Huskers.
19. I have never been a huge Beck fan. His offense is constant in the fumbles, INT's and other assorted blunders. He gets all pass happy, abandons what is working too quickly, has no identity and makes several WTH calls per game for the last 3 years. If he goes, I won't be upset.
20. An easier and more accurate way to gauge the "worthiness" of said coach to the program is ask this question. "What members of the current staff would hurt NU if they were to be hired away by another school? I can think of a few: Brown Fisher Garrison Kaz (DL actually started to get it together) Els (ditch ST and recruiting duties) LB appearing to be a bright spot this year Joseph (appears to have done a decent job) The rest would not impact NU if they were to go.
21. Beating a traditional SEC team like UGA will be a great win for the kids, the program as a whole and the fans. Even if they are down this year. Who cares. So are we. It is a chance to exorcise some demons, get an extra month of practice, showcase NU in Fl and allow Bo a chance to show he can develop ST's. Comparing ST play, UGA's sux as bad as ours. Not to mention, they are down several skill players while we should be pretty healthy on the OL, the receivers and AA should be good as well.
22. Welcome back. I said on another thread that Mason has done well in his first two starts to include the comeback and 2OT against GT. We should be the best D he has seen so pressure will be key. He appears poised in the pocket and is too good to allow hin to sit back in the pocket. Y'all having Gurley back is huge. I hope AA is 100% for us. He ran well against y'all last year until the fumble in the 4th. I wish we used our backs like Richt. Rotate and keep them fresh. We don't and won't. Other than Clowney, RG will be the best DE the Dawgs have faced. A beast off the edge. VV is a load up front and hard to handle 1-1. He will require a double team. Our LB's are finally coming into their own. So long as y'all don't run toss sweeps it should be a great game. For some reason, misdirection, formation shifts and that damn sweep are Bo's kryptonite. Well that and fumbles, INT's, stupid play calling etc....... Stick around.
23. It has been 6 years of WTH! when watching the O this year. One great play or series followed some of the dumbest play calling I have seen.
24. Murray done for the year. Marshall done for the year. Gurley back and 100%. They will run, run, run. Our run D needs to be ready. Jam the receivers at the line and knock them off their routes. Their losses include the following: Clemson Vandy Auburn Mizzou Other than Vandy, all top 10 teams, with star players out............. Eecked out wins against UF and UT. We need to jump on them quick and put the foot to the gas. They are probably less enthused than NU to be their. Their season went off track quickly. I am hoping that with almost a month to prepare we get a game plan together that will actually accomplish a complete 4 quarters of play, include a punt return of some description and copy Auburns game plan. It really comes down to which QB we have ready. Would like to have Martinez back. His quicks could really hurt them. TA better than RKIII IMO. They lost to a good passing team in Mizzou and a good running team in Auburn. We have no QB close to Mizzou (or receivers). Run the ball, win the game. Mason (QB) has played in 2 games and looked very good passing. Led a good comeback against GT. Went into 2OT. Pressure, pressure, pressure. He appears to good to allow him to sit back in the pocket. We will be the best D he has seen hands down in his two starts. Bo needs to earn his pay and create something just for this game ala the "spinner" or the stand up DL against MSU. We have a chance, they are down and injured to a degree. We have a D that is truly getting better and our O has faced some punishing D as well. Injuries on both sides could be the difference. To add to the nay sayers, This isn't last years UGA by a long shot. The same team we took into the 4th quarter and almost beat before the AA fumble. I like to think our D is much better than this time last year. Our O is in shambles, but a month to heal should help.
25. With the risk of being "yelled" at, it isn't. We do many things multiple ie fumble. INT's, TO's, but nothing perfectly...... TO ran about 10 plays to perfection out of multiple formations and motions. He was multiple in looks, not in play calling.
