  1. The Omaha World Herald is reporting that the book "Where the Red Fern Grows" is now been taken out of the campus library and is on the banned list of books.
  2. World of difference between bad mouthing someone (boss, former boss, mother-in-law, etc) in private with another person or two and having a MEETING consisting of a large group of people as pretty much a captive audience and doing it.
  3. Dont you think that this might have a way of uniting the fan base around the new coach and his staff? I think there were a lot of people who were on the fence about his hiring--thus maybe a bit reluctant to accept a new coach and this may move a LOT of folks to the same side
  4. If you had to choose between Steele and Coach O,,,,,who would you pick
  5. Bear in mind that Scott Frost is the OC at a top four team where the HC is relatively young--just a few years older than SF himself ((I think) So if he wants to be come a successful head coach at a Power 5 school--what is his best option 1. Wait for the Oregon job to open or the HC to retire 2. Go to a smaller D1 school and work his way up 3. Join the Nebraska staff as the OC, with a huge pay raise and the chance to be the next HC, while learning from an established HC 3 makes sense to me
  6. I spent many years in corporate america doing recruiting, interviewing, hiring and placing of employees. Early in my career, I always hired the person with the most impressive resume and the who was the most impressive on the interview. I was highly swayed by high GPA's, training, credentials their performance at previous companies (sales figures, etc) The results were mixed---had some good hires and had some bad ones---just like the rest of the people in the company Gradually, I shifted to a model where I tried to find the best fit for a particular position/job and looked for unique skill set and experience in the candidates. This also involved doing a careful evaluation of the needs of the company/department and of that particular position. The results were off the chart and I quickly become the best in the entire company (F500 Global) I have every reason to believe that SE did a very careful evaluation of our program--where we had been, where we are going, what the strengths were, what the challenges were---I think he has been doing this for some time and then he went out and found a candidate that matched those needs--and that candidate was Coach Riley Was he the best? Depends on how you define best? was he the best for our team? I believe the answer is yes--at least among the available pool of candidates
  7. Just curious why no one else in the country has snagged Coach O. Is he just waiting for the right gig?
  8. I have very little doubt that this decision, this deal has been in the works for some time and was finalized before Coach Pelini was dismissed. Cannot see it any other way.
  9. I was driving back from Nebraska to Charleston when I heard the announcement--so had about 20 plus hours of driving time to mull this over. I think many of us are highly impressed with Frost....but his lack of experience and HC experience is a real obstacle. So, we look to the HC in waiting option with perhaps a Tressell type guy coming into coach 4-5 years while grooming the future HC. The trouble with this scenario is that it creates a "temporary situation" especially with recruits---who is really running the show? Do you recruit based on the established coach or the future coach? And what happens if there is a clash of wills and egos? But, there is one coach that could overcome all of that--and its none other than Tom Osborne. He comes back for a stated period--say 2-3 years and Frost becomes the OC/Assistant Coach. Osborne grooms him---no clash as they have a history together and then at the appointed time, TO--having rebuilt the program, steps away (again) You break out the checkbook and hire the best DC you can find---someone who wants to be a career DC (Muschamp) and you make him the highest paid DC in the nation. Bring Ron Brown up as the OC in waiting. Stranger things have occurred
  10. I am willing to bet that the posters who continue to use the word "retard" in a derogatory manner, probably never had to grow up with a special needs family member.
  11. Do you really want a head coach, that has to be FORCED to make staff changes. A coach (such as BO) who is currently un-willing to make those changes (which is obvious to all--even those who want to retain BO, want some change in coordinators for the most part). is either: A; unwilling to properly evaluate the gravity of the situation that necessitates the change B: too stubborn and proud to make those changes neither of the above answers are what I would consider to be desirable traits in a head football coach. Off to watch the game with my father--it will likely be the last game he ever sees as he is in his final days GBR
  12. Lying to the NCAA is sort of like lying to the IRS......it's a lie, but everyone understands....
  13. I am convinced that you dont necessarily need to find a head coach with "the best defensive/offensive mind" but rather more of a CEO type that can lead, inspire, elevate people and most importantly---find, surround and support the very best talent (coordinators) that money can buy. The best sales people dont always make the best sales managers, etc, etc. The HC certainly has to know the game, but more from an overview standpoint, rather than a detail standpoint. So, far better to find a HC, who has succeeded at another program, even one smaller, and has done so with the above formula--than to find some coordinating guru. It goes without saying that the HC needs to have some congruent values with the state and program. I had liked the idea of a Tressel for a few years with Frost as the OC, on the job training----but I am leaning against it----what recruit wants to go and play for a "temporary coach" I think the best candidate--today is Jim McElwain, and the first interview question I would ask is "who would you want your OC/DC to be"? I think Muschamp would be a lights out DC and I actually think Beck is worth salvaging, although we have to go to an offense where the QB is efficient at passing, but can use his feet if necessary as opposed to a a QB who is an efficient runner, but can use his arm..if necessary
  14. He went after Stoops. Stoops decided to not come. He also went after Zook. Zook decided to step away from football to persue opportunities outside football. Remember, it was 6-7 months from the time we knew Carl was gone to the time that Papuchis was named DC. As was said on 1620 yesterday, it's funny how folks clamor at this deal like it was just Bo promoting the buddy, yet they forget it took 7 months and know nothing of what actually went on. It sounds like most college coaches sort of have an inside track on what is really going on and they possibly knew that Bo was looking for a YES MAN and not a real coordinator
  15. The more I look at Moglia, the more I like him, At this level you need a head coach who is a CEO, and can effectively FIND talent (coaches) delegate responsibility, but still have a grasp of the big picture and let the staff handle the details. The best salesman dont always make the best sales directors. Especially if you could pair Moglia with someone like a Scott Frost (young up and coming, but needs a few more years to learn the ropes) and then can have a seamless transition.
  16. The entire college football/coaching community knows the situation with Bo and his staff--it has become common (in games like this) to use their issues as the pre-game dialogue. So I dont think replacing him (despite the 9 win seasons) would DETER ANYONE and if a potential coach was ok with that kind of track record, than they are clearly not the candidate for Nebraska.
  17. On a side note--was I the only one that was keeping on eye on the FSU/Miami game, just hoping and praying for a Miami victory to at least give us some small ray of light on this dark and dreadful day---just something and then FSU pulls it out.
  18. I am ready to give Frost a shot---but here is how you do it. You hire someone, oh, say Jim Tressel as head coach---and you hire Frost as the OC/assistant head coach and you find the best DC money can buy. You do this with the understanding that the Head Coach is only going to coach a few years (2-3) with Frost learning the ropes and then stepping into the position. (Does not have to be Tressel--just someone older, available, with maybe something left to prove) Frost is a winner, pure and simple and I dont think he would move from a top five program to the same position at another school unless there was a clear and promised path to the HC position. Everytime I see JP on the sidelines--he just looks lost--dont know the man, but he just looks confused and idiotic---every single time the camera is on him. I like Bo, have been rooting for Bo and I will ALWAYS root for BO----but its like when you are dating that one girl---been seeing her for awhile--and its time to move on---she just aint the one and you cant change. Bo's downfall has been and always will be the un-willingness to hire staff that may be a lot better at specific things than he is. Its time
  19. Good point. Again, IMO, points to Beck as OC........We are multiple (in that we do nothing to perfection), but not in a way to get our complete talent involved. It could also be that we haven't really had a QB who was a prolific passer in the way Beck wants. Again, in this O, Beck needs a throwing QB. In Bo's version we need a TA. They just need to figure it out.... Good point. Again, IMO, points to Beck as OC........We are multiple (in that we do nothing to perfection), but not in a way to get our complete talent involved. I would agree, In our offense, I would much rather have a proficient passer--who can use his feet to run--if he really has to, than a proficient runner--who can use his arm--if he really has to
  20. The really crappy thing is that even if we win--its only a big win to us--and not to the rest of the world.
