  1. They chose to come to PSU. They knew what the situation was before they got there. They're only 'suffering' because they chose to. Paterno knew. Everyone knew. Sandusky was referred to as "Jerry the Perv" at least as early as 2002.
  2. PSU should be razed with no two stones left standing & the earth salted.

  4. You never can tell dude. You never can tell. Not being silly at all...maybe half the team will get stoned again and play them. http://www.chatsports.com/michigan-wolverines/a/Former-Michigan-player-Nearly-half-the-team-was-stoned-during-Appalachian-State-loss-10-2-3043 Yes, actually you can tell, it would make little sense to have totally different people be stoned for a game against the same opponent from years before, especially after a loss due to said activity. The odds for this are rather astronomical. I have watched Michigan for over 35 years and the Rich Rod years were like nothing I have seen, the worse records since the 30's and the 50's. But it was the complete lack of defense that stood out, it was like watching some strange team I have never watched before, even at 7-6 last year it looked like a crap year but it was a Michigan crap year, but Rich Rod days were a f'ing anomaly of space and time that come around only once as fan, maybe twice if I live into the 80's-90's. Not to derail the fantasy version of events with actual facts but the Appalachian State win was in 2007. Lloyd Carr was still head coach. The Wolverines finished 9-4.
  5. I mostly just lurk here these days but I'm compelled to say something about this: The FBI recommends a minimum of 12" of penetration in ballistic gelatin for a reason. According to Hornady's own data the 40 gr Urban TAP rounds barely penetrates 6". That is a recipe for disaster for anyone going up against a determined assailent. Hell even Hornady points out that they are designed for a very limited application. Not only are you recommending it as a home defense round but you also want to issue it in patrol rifles? God forbid they ever encounter someone using cover. FWIW the 40 gr Urban TAP is the 40 gr V-MAX with a different marketing pitch. I don't think Hornady even offers it any longer. Also the x-rays on page 51 of the Hornady brochure actually show trauma caused by the 75 gr BTHP (Ballistic Tip Hollow Point) TAP, which is a generally well regarded round. Old myths aside, .223/5.56 is no more of a threat to penetrate of common building materials than handgun calibers commonly used for self defense. A couple of layers of drywall is not going to stop any round that is capable of reliably stopping a human being so (as always) you need to be aware of what is beyond your target ("Threat, Backstop and Beyond") but to reiterate, 5.56 is no more of a threat in that regard than any other effective defensive caliber (including buckshot).
  6. Read my post again, pay particular attention to the last two lines... "To be blunt, broad comparisons between very large groups that have little in common economically or culturally are of little use period. If you want valid data then you need to look at changes within a single group." It has nothing to do with whether or not I'm comfortable with cross national comparisons, it has to do with the fact that they aren't of much value. Ahh I see, well I'll let you kids get back to your circle jerk then.
  7. What seems obvious to you appears to be less obvious to the CDC itself. That being said if the response to a ban on political lobbying was to abandon research then a reasonable person might conclude that the only purpose for said research was to further the lobbying effort. I'll leave it up to others to decide whether concluding that a ban on political lobbying was actually a front to prohibit research is equally reasonable. Despite claims to the contrary studies on gun violence have continued to be published in the intervening years.
  8. Then you will need to explain what your definition for the terms are since by definition Sweden was a third world nation. Which G8 nation do you feel a better comparator to the US.....Russia or Japan? To be blunt, broad comparisons between very large groups that have little in common economically or culturally are of little use period. If you want valid data then you need to look at changes within a single group.
  9. First, second & third world are cold war terms and have been irrelevant for the past twenty years. That being said nations with small, culturally homogeneous populations are equally non-comparable with the US. Cherry picking which apples & oranges you wish to compare does little to further an objective debate. That is just flat out not true. The relevant law actually states... "None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control." The CDC was not being blocked from funding research it was being prevented from continuing as a platform for political advocacy. Throughout the 80's & 90's there were a number of high profile individuals within the Center (along with the JAMA & NEJM) who believed that firearms where inherently bad and that individuals should be prohibited from owning them. They specifically funded research with the sole purpose of furthering that goal. That's not science....it's ax grinding. What does the CDC have to say about the legislation? "In addition to the restrictions in the Anti-Lobbying Act,CDC interprets the language in the CDC's Appropriations Act to mean that CDC's funds may not be spent on political action or other activities designed to affect the passage of specific Federal, State, or local legislation intended to restrict or control the purchase or use of firearms." The CDC itself does not believe that it is prohibited from funding research There is actually quite a bit of peer reviewed research available regarding firearms & violence. The problem is that most of it just doesn't support the claims of those who are at war with private firearm ownership. On the other hand the work that the CDC funded was generally viewed as being substandard and of little value. Even in the generally sympathetic JAMA & NEJM they were savaged in review.
  10. Nebraska finished 7th at the B1G tournament this weekend. (4) Sueflohn - 2nd (4) Green - 2nd (3) Kokesh - 3rd (3) Ihnen - 4th (8) Nagel - 8th (tournament seed in parenthesis)S Sueflohn, Green, Kokesh & Ihnen are automatic qualifiers for the NCAA tournament.
  11. ESPN isn't a news site & SI's Dohrman is still busy digging through Youngstown dumpsters.

  13. According to Stassen (& James Howell's Database) they are #13 in wins & #16 in win%. Using other metrics: BB73's all time poll rankings: #16 Lord Jeff Buck's prestige rankings (2010): #19 ESPN's prestige rankings (2009): #21
  14. That's what I think will happen as well. The Big East name going with the C7 is apparently already a done deal. I'm sure the BCS bid going with the FB schools is part of the package (what value does it have to the C7?) and the NCAA/Media partners will probably just let it ride for a year because it's good PR if nothing else.
  15. They already have their football schedules set so the easiest thing to do would be to just play the season out. Don't forget that Memphis, UCF, Houston & SMU are also set to start play in the *leftovers conference this year. Of course they'll have to rewrite the schedules for every other sport, but that shouldn't be an impossible hurdle. *Former Big East According to the news that came out yesterday the timetable has been moved up & the 'new' Big East (C7 + X & Butler) will start play this upcoming season (2013-2014). Apparently Fox pushed to get it done.
  16. Georgia Tech is a charter member of the SEC.
  17. I'm somewhat split when it comes to competitive balance. When Nebraska first joined and we were talking about divisions I started looking into the historical performance of teams. It soon became apparently that most teams tend to have a general level of success that they don't deviate from over the long term. While there may be some highs & lows the majority of schools tend to There have actually only been a very small number of schools that have bootstrapped themselves to the next level of performance for a sustained period....the Wisconsins, Northwesterns, Kansas States, Virginia Techs, Oregons & Miamis are actually the exception rather than the norm. To be honest what I found to be the best way to determine a team likely to have sustained success was to look at FB spending by the athletic department. There is a very correlation between the two. There is also a lot of inertia involved with FB success; good teams tend to stay good while bad teams tend to stay bad. Another aspect of 'competitive balance' that gets overlooked is that equal access to the more successfull/brand name teams is beneficial to those who don't typically enjoy much success. The general consensus is that Ohio State, TSUN & PSU will all end up in the east and over the long run it's possible that will actually hurt some of the western teams. It means Minnesota & Illinois won't be on national TV quite as often & that attendance may sag with only a single marquee team (Nebraska) in their division. So yeah I agree that 'competitive balance' isn't something that can be absolutely planned in advance there is a level that can (and should) be taken into account when planning long term divisions. Thanks, got it!
  18. You've successfully trolled us once again Adidas, you magnificent bastard! Well done...well done.
  19. You wouldn't have to keep it lit all the time, you could turn it on in between plays and when the officials need a measurement. Meanwhile ....20 yards behind the offense they'd be running Barbasol ads on the field.
  20. Calling a Hawaiian of Samoan descent 'some Irish guy' may be the perfect summation of the relationship ND fans have with reality.
  21. No worries, I just wanted to clarify that my ideal 20 doesn't necessarily consist of the teams listed. The latter. Louisville & WVU aren't potential members AFAIC. FWIW If I were going to put those team in 4x5 pods it would probably look something like: Competitive Balance: Central: Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Pitt, Indiana Northern: TSUN, Sparty, Northwestern, Rutgers, Illinois Eastern: Penn State, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Duke Western: Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota Regional rivalries: Northeast: Ohio State, Penn St, Purdue, Indiana, Pitt Central: TSUN, Sparty, Northwestern, Illinois, Missouri Western: Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota Southeast: North Carolina, Rutgers, Virginia, Maryland, Duke
  22. FWIW it wasn't my plan, I was just showing how the teams that Husker John & IA State Husker were discussing could be broken down into pods. One question on your set-up... Are you talking about a full rotation of the pods? Something like: 2017: W+WC & E+EC 2018: W+E & WC + EC 2019: W + EC & E + WC That would let you play every team in the conference at least once every three years (using your annual rotation) and have them at home one out of every six. BTW why did you choose Pitt & UVA to be in the EC pod?
  23. Complete drivel. He's a LB with average stats, nothing more. The thought that he should be a serious Heisman candidate was ludicrious from the outset. Without the media & ND desperately grabbing onto what they thought was a feel good PR goldmine nobody would have looked at him twice as a player.
  24. But Isn't it fun watching the domers try & deflect attention away from that basic fact?
  25. You can actually see the dollar bills in her eyes.
