  1. I think Armstrong is great player but he is not the QB if we want a championship team. Two intentional grounding flags, not running when he should, throwing off the back foot, thinking too long before throwing, etc. He is a great runner and leader. As long as we continue to play QBs like him, we will have trouble recruiting and develping really good ones
  2. I am not looking for great things from these guys this year.
  3. Offensive line is inexperienced and not getting the job done. The defensive line does not maintain lane coverage and they need to do it since the linebackers are not there often. If Riley wants to throw more, he must use a QB that does not panic or throw off his back foot. I think we shul be running more with Cross and Wilbon in the backfield using some assignment blocking schemes. Not very impressed so far.
  4. Just for everyone's knowledge, generally speaking, the "clap" is a silent count. A lot like any other form of "silent count" there is most likely only one movement. Leg left, arm extended downward, etc., to notify the center that the QB is ready for the ball. Every now and then they'll change it up to two "claps", "leg lifts" or whatever. The "count" isn't actually the motion the QB makes for the snap. The count is actually the amount of "head nods" the Center makes. For example, they could determine that they will go on 2. What that means is that the the ball is snapped after 2 "head nods". Count on 3, then it's 3 head nods. There are many advantages to the "clap". This allows for the Center to be able to look downfield and read the D. The other silent counts require Center to watch the QB during all pre-snap stuff. Chip Kelly's Eagles used one where Center was still able to look downfield by having the guard watch the QB pre-snap. Then taps the Center when QB is ready. Disadvantage for all silent counts. Everyone on OL stares at the Center for those nods. I did not see this in the Mich State game and the announcers did not either. I did see the snap on Armstrong's clap and the defensive ends were in the backfield before our linemen moved. The average reaction time for humans is about 3/4 second. The defensive ends can see Armsstrong start to clap and their 3/4 reaction starts then. The offensive linement cannot see the QBack so they have to wait for the sound or for the center to move his arms. The clap is a very bad method. Our linemen need the advantage of knowing the snap count so they can get their 3/4 reaction started before the defensive line can initiate their reaction. Our linemen need to cross the line of scrimmage and make contact under the defensive linemen's pads to start turning their shoulder as they rise out of their stance. The clap negates the advantage to our linemen.
  5. Here's some data. maybe i'm overthinking though. a bit garbled, but the data is good. from NCAA website. pass efficiency rankings: Maryland - 2012-Present: Assistant Coach - Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Houston Cougars - 2010-11: Assistant Coach - Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Philadelphia Eagles - 2009: Assistant Coach - Defensive Special Assistant Dallas Cowboys - 2007-08: Assistant Coach - Defensive Coordinator San Diego Chargers - 2004-06: Assistant Coach - Defensive Backs Houston Texans - 2002-03: Assistant Coach - Defensive Backs Assistant Syracuse - 2001: Assistant Coach - Defensive Backs Missouri - 1999-00: Assistant Coach - Defensive Backs San Jose State - 1997-98: Assistant Coach - Defensive Backs: 1997, 1998 year pass defense pass efficiency def. interceptions 1997(SJS) 63 38 7 (20 ints) 1998(SJS) 49 N/A (13) 1999(MIZ) 33 81 (from 27 previous year) 76 (10), 13 ints previous year 2000(MIZ) 47 65 34(14) 2001(SYR) 24 (11 prev. yr) 28(14 prev. yr) 46 (13, up from 7) 2010(HOU) 68 (72) 73 (67) 49 (13) up from 66(11) 2011(HOU) 40 12 3(21) 2012(MAR) 30 (from 75) 65 (93) 114 (4) down from 68 (11) 2013(MAR) N/A 64 73(11) 2014(MAR) N/A 40 91(9) Just seems to me that he moves around too much and too often. If he really good, he should have stayed longer with one team and moved up the chain.
  6. Bothers me that Urban Meyer is probably one of the top college coaches opted to hire Tim Beck as an offensive coordinator. Beck must have been better than we thought.

    Great Coach

Would the Huskers have been the winner in the Championship game last night if we had hired Urban Meyer a few years ago instead of Ohio State?
  8. What qualities or performance traits do Urban Meyer and Nick Saban have that Solich, Callahan, and Pelini don't have? What makes the difference?
  9. What four teams would you pick for the National Championship after the bowl games were played? I have always thought the four teams should have been selected after the bowl games were played. The selection committee picked: Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State. After the bowl games were played, I would have picked the following teams to play for the national championship: Ohio State Texas Christian Oregon Georgia Tech Honorable Mention: Notre Dame and Michigan State What four teams would you pick for the national championship after seeing the bowl games>
  10. I thought Oregon looked very strong today. Their defense was better than I thought. Their offense is good. I think Frost will be someone's great head coach someday. Wish he would be in Lincoln next year.
  11. Just saw OSU run about 80 years to go up two scores on Alabama. The OSU fans were going wild in the stands. Just thinking that they were on probation not too long ago and then hired Urban Meyer. They are going to compete for the national championship this month. They are beating the top teams in the country. Are we ever going to have the thrills and elations that the OSU fans have now? We have not recovered from Solich, Callahan and Pelini. I hope we don't get a revolving door for coaches searching for the holy grail. We seem to be in rebuilding mode and OSU recovers in just a few years.
  12. Rivals can come and go depending on how old you are. We will develop rivals in the Big10- it just may take some time. Missouri used to be big rival at one with the Big Brown Jug as a trophy. Then Colorado and Oklahoma were big rivals. Osborne said the Oklahoma rival made us better. In time, we will get more rivals. I don't know what Riley will do. The posts that I have read say that he and his assistants are good recruiters. We do need good recruiting. The difference will come in the assistand coaching and their ability to teach and develop players. Both Devaney and Osborne did well with long time assistants that were not nationally known top echelon coaches. They were effective and good at what they did. Hopefully, Riley and crew will get the job done. Time will tell. Harbaugh, Frost, McElwain and others did not come to Nebraska so we have Riley. Let's support him and see what happens. Its our only option since is on a multi-year contract.
  13. I am hoping that Stanton is developed as our QB next year and beyond. We need a great throwing QB who can run if needed. Tommy is good runner who could be a great runner.
  14. Bill Callahan was an NFL head coach, and that worked out so well!!! Callahan is getting rave reviews as a line coach at Dallas. Go figure? Irony, he could still be a Husker head coach if he had replaced Cosgrove.
  15. I thnk Beck was overcome by the fact that the offensive line was not getting the job done especially up the middle. I don't want to defend Beck but our O-Line play was not good or inspiring. Do you remember the iso shot of our right tackle and the announcer's comment- You have to do more than put a hand on them?
  16. Another rumor- Carl Pelini for DC and Shawn Watson back as the OC.
  17. I did not know the stats but it was not what I saw. I saw Tommy throw the ball inaccurately many times and sometimes too late- half second or so allowing the defensive back to make up the cover distance. Tommy was terrible at long balls. He was good at shorter distances but still frequently hit the receiver forcing him to break stride. I don't think he is a good passer despite his statistics. He needs a QB coach to work with him on his throwing. I think he could be a great one but not with his current throwing.
  18. Whatever the game summary for this bowl, you can take pride in the fact that the team did not quit and played hard for four full quarters. Unfortunately, now we have to wait until next year now.
  19. We would still be in this game if Tommy could really throw the ball accurately and at least a half second sooner. If we sustained drives with ball control, we would be much better off and I think the defense would be playing better too.
  20. The Huskers could do a better job tackling if they were on their knees praying for USC runners to trip on their own feet.
  21. Seems like the announcers are talking mostly about USC- I think they have picked their winner already.
  22. Can't win if you can't tackle. Where are the linebackers?
  23. I think we would have a comfortable lead if Tommy could throw accurately and on time. USC stayed in the game and now we have some ragged tackling going on. Our offense needs to stay on the field and get some points to keep our defense on the bench more.
  24. Send pictures of beach girls in thongs. We need something remarkable and memoreable from this season!
  25. After many years of seeing the Huskers against West Coast temas, I think they are usually faster and quicker than we are. We usually don't play with a lot of emotion either. I saw a list of sportswriters and others picking USC to win. Only one of about 30 picked the Huskers to win. I hope we win but I don't expect the to win.
