  1. Good post that shows we actually have won some games over quality opponents......which we have. Perhaps one of the hardest knocks on Martinez is his turnovers. Turnovers are tracked and Martinez has high career numbers in turnovers.
  2. The best group to answer that might be the 115 DI schools who haven't accomplished it in the past 5 seasons
  3. Wow. One of the few fans that is actually willing to talk about the next game that we have! Yes. I'm as disappointed in the offensive and defensive production this season as anyone else. But rather than just fire away jabs at Pelini, I'm more interested in specifically what he's doing to take us to the next level.
  4. Our talent has been upgraded very well with the past two classes. I am very optimistic about our talent level in the conference now and going forward. Our front 7 is very inexperienced and upperclassmen at those positions struggle. And no, I do not find it ridiculous to expect that if Pelini is let go the next coach wins immediately. Thus far even an 8 win season would be worse than anything Pelini has delivered from day one of his tenure.
  5. My concern for tomorrow is not about Pelini's future.....it's the hope and confidence that Armstrong and Kellogg can keep the chains moving.....and that we can find the solution to making tackles from the LB spot.
  6. Do we really have any idea if either Stoops or Zook actually wanted to join staff as DC, or if Pelini actually chose not to go with either of them?
  7. Winning 9+ games every year helps your cause. Solich was .500 in 2002.
  8. Good post. There are a lot of good points in here that some don't want to recognize. When we say this isn't the 90's anymore, this is part of what is being referred to. We talk about all the changes in college football over the past 20 years and what they were designed to do. They were designed so the Minnesota's....and even FBS schools for that matter......could compete and compete well. Like the post from Mavric referred to in another thread, Pelini is one of 4 or 5 coaches to win 9 games or more in each of his seasons. Why are there only 4 or 5 coaches who have done it? Because it ain't easy. Period.
  9. Actually, it is. It's break down of a Minnesota running play, and how Defense reacted. Sorry. I think it was Andrew that posted this. It's excellent. There are articles about the Minny game from other former Husker LBs, and they are each saying similar things. These articles all correlate with the moves Pelini is making at the LB spot to get the run defense in better shape. I know this is an internet message board, but it's great to have the insight of the former players who know alignments and schemes, and the busts that are happening.
  10. Blasphemy! We do not adjust, and specifically not against the jet sweep. Kidding. Our LBs are struggling. I linked an article in another thread from Barrett Ruud where he discusses the issues the LBs are having.
  11. Gritty perhaps. A leader will find a way to get all the individual pieces to function as a unit.
  12. Some of the things we knock Pelini for now were very high on the list of why we wanted him hired.
  13. When it comes to a traveling fan base, Nebraska is second to none. In regard to the money, yes we are up there. But when it's said this isn't the 90's anymore, some of that has to do with revenue sharing.....why we changed leagues....all that stuff. We pay Pelini very well, but crap Iowa pays Ferentz very well. As far as the players, we are getting more talented, but recruiting was not great until the past couple of years. I mean what's the average age of our front 7? But hey, if we want to fire Pelini, then by all means do so.....and I guess we can see what other coaching candidates think of our situation.
  14. That show clause would be the perfect thing for Frost though. He'd have the first 5-6 games as head coach with little pressure. Then Tressel gets back and stays for a few years showing him first hand how to run a complete team. Recruiting between Tressel's Ohio roots and Frost's young players coach type approach would be nothing but positives. Eichorst would have my vote to be the highest paid state employee if he could pull that off. Don't see it as a realistic scenario if a change is made. Which I am starting to believe there won't be one. In your opinion though, could you see that working? In a case where we think we have this coach like Frost who is going to be the next big thing, I see it working better than just throwing him to the wolves. He'd be completely set up to fail here if he was handed the job. It would take some of the risk away. But again, Eichorst would have to do one hell of a job pitching this idea to both of them and signing them to contracts. And paying each of them market value as head coach.
  15. I don't disagree that there haven't been some individual success stories over the years. But "does extremely well with talent" and "can coach that talent to a championship level" are vast overstatements of what he has accomplished with talent. We might have differing definitions but I haven't seen "extremely well" or "championship level" from Bo, as it applies to the team. For awhile I felt it was limited to subpar recruiting and that has recently shown some improvement. However, now I think it has to do with the whole deal of how Pelini recruits, teaches, schemes, prepares, manages, adjusts, and motivates. It is clear to me he is failing at a majority of those things and recruiting is the only one that I have seen any indication of improvement with. Sorry but the Minny game shoved me over the edge. I'm not qualified to coach this team but even I could see the few adjustments we needed to make in that game. It was like watching the debacle in Boulder and last years CCG simultaneously and it was only Minnesota standing in our way. Should've been like taking candy from a baby. But instead it was a total clusterf*ck of mind numbing proportions. Yes, our definitions might be different and that's ok. I enjoy discussing Husker football.....especially since I live in Colorado. I understand the Minny game pushed some over the edge. I figured our defense would struggle a bit, though I'll be the first to admit I didn't realize we'd struggle at LB this bad. But I know Pelini will not rest until he finds a LB who can make tackles. No reason we shouldn't have a LB with 125+ tackles. As far as championship levels, Pelini has only been a head coach 5.5 seasons. We've had two teams that were as good as any in the B12. Our transition to the B10 has been tough and Pelini's past recruiting struggles haven't helped. He does have a title ring from his LSU stint as DC.
  16. Well if you have championship level talent, it sure makes the coaching profession a lot easier. Now in his sixth season, you would have to put finding, recruiting and motivating talent on Bo Pelini's job description. His teams do not look like they belong in the Top 25, and appear literally out of their league in the Top 10. And that's with the keys to the University of Nebraska franchise in his pocket, which should count for something. You shouldn't be able to watch the assistant coach at Minnesota showing you how he plans to exploit the Nebraska defense a week before the game. Then watch Minnesota do exactly what he said they would do. If that's about a lack of defensive talent, it means the 100% Pelini Class of recruits is operating at dangerously low levels. I'm not sure they could hang in the Mountain West. Or maybe it's just that Bo Pelini isn't allowed to get as angry any more. Tough call. Recruiting is very important. And yes, I'll say it as many times as necessary I guess......Pelini's recruiting was not good his first 3-4 years and it's hurt us. Changing leagues didn't help with the LB spot specifically, but this group of young LBs seem solid. But they will (and are) make mistakes. I can say unequivocally that recruiting has been a top focus of this staff for the past two seasons. It's been an emphasis.....so yes, it's basically in the job description. That Minnesota video is being exaggerated a little bit for what it was.....but yes, they clearly beat us in one on one matchups all over the field....offensively and defensively. In that game, our LBs had opportunities to make TFL and didn't get it done. Barrett Ruud and Jay Foreman (who both might know a little about the LB position) wrote articles about it which I linked in another thread. Our recruiting was not good, and now that it's improved we need experience. And yes, it's on Pelini. But time to start over with a new coach? I wouldn't, but it's not my decision.
  17. This is clearly faulty logic. You could never (legally) pay players. Everyone has always had practice fields and weights. That has never stopped programs from being elite. Money is hugely important. Money buys: Superior coaches Superior facilities Superior marketers/brand managers And those things in turn attract superior players. And furthermore, (1) creates superior players by taking already talented players and getting the most out of them. So it's perfectly fine to be happy with where we're at. But it's also perfectly reasonable to want more, given our resources. look no further than Oregon to prove this point...10 years ago, nobody knew who Oregon was let alone they were the ducks...now with 100's of millions of Phil Knights Nike money AND MARKETING...id say they have done quite well for themselves and now earned it.. They have done well. Except for that one prize.
  18. Callhan's best record of his tenure here was one 9 win season.
  19. Are you serious? Can't be but, are you? Back this up with anything other than A) Suh (one of the greatest DL's ever to don a CFB uniform) B) A sickening overabundance of LSU/SEC type talent I've seen so many statements from you that just plain do not jive with anything I have seen from this team in the last six years. I don't dislike you, heck I don't even know you, but I'm going to start calling you on every one of them. You've got some good sh#t there and I wanna see if there is anyway a brother can get hooked up. I'm not above using mind altering drugs if it makes our product on the field seem acceptable in the slightest. No worries.....but we may not be in as much disagreement as it initially appears. Your bullet points A&B above are what I'm saying. When Pelini has the talent, he can coach that talent to a championship level. Suh and Dorsey are examples of the DL....might be able to put Crick in there as well. Barrett Ruud gives Pelini the credit for making him the record breaking LB he was. You can add Super Demorrio and Lavonte to his successes as well. Pelini defenses turn LBs into tackling machines. It's why the staff is frustrated with the LB position right now. There are many examples in the secondary, from the Bullocks to Fonzo & Prince, and now Stanley. Some might even say Pelini had O'Hanlon playing better than anyone would have expected. We've had what I would call a significant talent gap since Suh......so I very much agree with your bullet point examples. If this young talent on defense pans out better than some of the whiffs the past few years.....Chase Rome as one glaring example......I think we can get to the next level.
  20. Agreed. There were a couple of Pelini juco recruits thrown in, but Pelini does extremely well with talent. I'm glad our recruiting has picked up. I think it will pay dividends.
  21. It's time to accept the possibility that it can be better. Nothing risked, nothing gained. Steve Pederson quote?
