  1. I may be wrong here, but this looks like the call on Wilson. The call on Farniok was a joke. Personally, I can live w/refs missing calls. But, don't call what you don't see because the result looks like it was a penalty
  2. 1 thing the announcers mentioned was NU's transition to a progression passing game. For the life of me I don't know what that means. Every pass play I've ever seen has a progression w/the exception of some RPO's & screens. The staple of the Oregon O Frost comes from is the Bubble Y Over. There's a built it hot route, progression of 3, & a check down. Anybody know what this was in reference to?
  3. I may be in the minority w/you on this, but I agree. Here's reality imo, we don't have sticky CB's. When Lamar Jackson's draft highlight tape shows him whiffing a jam on WR, getting smoked by 10 yards, and intercepting an incredibly underthrown ball...that was a good time to accept this. The 2nd thing, when the opponent catches the D in a sell out for the run call, the coverage is going to be tight man or loose man. If you accept my first point, the only difference is do you want the CB over the top or trailing? In passing situations, that Cover 7 look is challenging, IF NU does a better job of effecting the QB more consistently. It may be a little more bend but don't break mentality than we'd prefer, but NU actually forced OSU into favorable situations on their scoring drives that more times than not results in FG's or punts.
  4. I'm not pessimistic, but a few negative things really stood out to me. #1 As others have mentioned, there's just no juice at the skilled positions outside of Wandale. Which brings me to my 2nd point, if you aren't a big play offense, you especially can't afford all the rhythm breaking plays that have seemed to plague this team under Frost. #2 Take the 3 drives NU doesn't score on in the 1st half. Drive 2 - Offsides on 2nd & 1. Drive 3 - Martinez has equipment failure after a 1 play 1st down and McCaffery fumbles snap on 2nd down to sink the next set of downs. Drive 5 - Delay of game on 1st down to start 5th possession of half. Then of course the 2 QB fumbles in the 2nd half. Fix any of this & at worst the score is 17-14 at half. #3 For the love of God, please get North/South inside the 5 yard line. In fairness to coaches, they called a bash concept or switch zone play, which is an inside zone run for the QB, & he gives to Mills, who gets strung out. Probably a bad read on Martinez's part, but this has to be emphasized in this situation I have to believe.
  5. Vid reminded me that I've read multiple x's Duval spends practice w/D-line. Is he a de facto assistant D-Line coach or is he motivating fat boys?
  6. Aranda hired Ron Roberts as his DC. Roberts was Aranda & Pete Goldings mentor. among others Saban has poached several of his assistants over the years. He's up there in age, but I agree, it's going to be interesting to see how he & Aranda handle the wide open Big 12.
  7. I'm over simplifying this, but it's not that dramatic a switch for LSU from Aranda's 3-4 1-gap scheme to a traditional 4-3 1-gap. (Hopefully this doesn't jumble). o o o + o o B E T N B I I o o o + o o E T N E S M W Essentially, all you're doing is switching the strong side OLB in the 4-3 scheme for a DE at the LOS and changing labels. For example, I recall when the Bucs switched from 4-3 to 3-4, the big question was how would Lavonte David adapt from being a weak side OLB to an ILB. As you can see however, he's playing the exact same position in Bowles scheme, which is very similiar to Aranda's. I will add, there's a video series on Youtube of Bo installing the D at NU & while I won't for a second pretend he's not a knowledgeable coach who's forgotten more than I know, he puts a lot of players in conflict on every snap of the ball, & that is what most coaches attempt to minimize.
  8. If LSU fired him today, they could almost pay him as much as NU did to have him coach Cardinal Mooney or whatever equivalent he prefers this go around
  9. That might be overstating it, regardless, Lubick as a new OC, with a new cast, is sure to have a fresh perspective on what those base plays are. A theme I like is that Lubick appears to be honing in on situational football. Perhaps we'll see an offense running plays with purpose & won't see shovel pass on 1st & goal as a result. As a side note, was Held doing a Billy Bob Thornton impersonation, or is he still living the quarantine life?
  10. My educated guess would be simplicity/uniformity. Alabama for example can transition from a 3-4 OVER front to a 4-3 OVER front by simply removing the strong side DE or 5th man on the LOS when opponent removes TE. They can spin a DB down to OLB to play nickle or dime, they can spin an OLB down to DE, but every positions techniques and assignment remain the same in their quarters coverage scheme. For Chinander to do that from the TITE formation, all the interior techniques and assignments would change from their base D.
  11. It comes down to what coverages you run, what you ask these "OLB's" to do in coverage, & sub-packages. The Bucs run a 3-4 with JPP & Shaq Barrett as OLB's. The Steelers do the same w/Bud Dupree & TJ Watt. JPP was a career 4-3 DE, the rest fit the hybrid mold you reference better, but they are clearly no JoJo or Shaquem Griffin, & they aren't asked to do much in coverage. I watched the Steelers opening game & interestingly found them playing Chinanders "TITE" formation the entire game as their base defense. The key difference between these D's, the Georgia & Alabama's of the world & what I've seen of Chinanders D to date are sub-packages. These teams all remove a 3-4 DE & spin their OLB's down to a 4-3 DE. Where Chinander dating back to UCF has been married to his base D far more. Prior to late last season, I've never noticed him switch, but that doesn't mean he didn't. I think NU's is on the right track with "OLB's" like Nelson, Cooper, & Payne, & I prefer their 3-4 scheme, but I think Chinander's sub-package D has to evolve for him to become a high level DC.
  12. As a coach I say this all the time, tackling issues typically stem from athleticism issues. ei, if you're behind on the play, you're not in position to make a solid tackle, & that presents as poor tackling. It's not complicated, better athletes = better tackling.
  13. I thought Corcoran might get a look at LG as well with his RS off, but I guess it's a good thing he's already emerged as the clear heir apparent at LT. I get the building depth statement in this Covid climate, but the first priority has always got to be preparing the 5 on the field. What good is depth if the surface has holes in it? Fisher said something similar after year 1, how year 1 was about building his room, & I thought it was one of the dumbest things I've ever heard a coach say.
  14. This kids film screams zone corner. He plays off the ball, identifies route combinations, jumps those routes, and is physical. Not sure how that would have translated to NU's scheme.
  15. I read this & thought, #1 just shut up & avoid the need to tell everybody you are gaming the system. #2, why Georgia, if you're willing to move, transfer to a Florida school no questions asked. Then I see he was going to attend Valdosta, the winningest HS program in America. Kid ain't dumb, he wanted to play, but only if he could cherry pick a primo situation, & of course appear on a reality TV show.
  16. Last week, Michigan was the new Texas, today it's Nebraska. I like this view better.
  17. This is the worst version of 12 angry men ever
  18. As a proponent of allowing play, this season may unravel at the end if "postponing" games continues to be permitted. If the choice doesn't become play or forfeit, we could find a log jam of un-played games, w/teams picking & choosing which games they prefer to make up. Not to mention it opens the door for postponing out of inconvenience given the "outbreaks" are cloaked in vague anonymity (rightfully so, but the point remains).
  19. The answer to PC culture run amok is not flipping a pure meritocracy on it's head
  20. 1. Florida Atlantic may be in the same state, but this isn't close to home at all for Greene. It's at least an 8 hr drive. 2. Greene is an elite athlete, but he wasn't a D1 ready prospect. He needed a year or 2 in the S&C program. 3. On signing day, he said something to the effect he knew he could go to NU & start right away easily. I remember thinking he was in for a rude awakening. If I'm going to speculate on his decision to leave, I think his destination speaks volumes.
  21. I don't know about Leonhard, but a lot of coaches teach "speed turns" (360). Another technique I don't like. I get where you were coming from, but #20 here is playing the role of a flex defender, not str8 man. He would have S help over the top, but he did get SMOKED.
  22. This isn't a true 1on1 drill, but Jim Leonhard coaches his DB's to stop backpedaling, cut off, & "redirect" (catch) receivers much like this. I personally would never coach that, but I'm not implying the guy isn't a great coach either.
  23. Perhaps for some, for others this is Nick Bosa's situation wrapped in Covid. More & more of these guys are physically ready for the NFL before they've played a 3rd season and they don't want to risk being the next Jaylon Smith. Covid is a legit reason not to risk injury w/o the selfish stigma ect...
  24. If I'm missing something, please enlighten me, but this is my take away from all the Big 10 Back rumors... Select coaches & AD's are going rogue attempting to create a solution for Kevin Warren & Co. &/or attempting to force their hand. They will probably have as much success as Warren did in leading all of CF into the abyss.
  25. Is this a National Security or Pandora's Box argument? Perhaps there's an angle I'm not considering, but seriously, outside of destroying the reputation and credibility of people, what "harm" could actually be created by transparency?
