  1. I remember we were starting to get the ''Win at all Costs'' reputation after C. Peter/ LP/ 3 other guys from that team that we tried to hide from the law ..Heck, even Johnny Rodgers being kept on the team, even though he'd gotten in trouble. But what I meant by it in this situation, was that I fear if we start reneging er...taking scholarships back, we actually will get that reputation among high school coaches and recruits..It's also much easier to play for someone you feel actually cares about you rather than a former coach's ''Us against the Fans'' mentality. I get it that we want to fight against the ''participation trophy'' mentality of today's kids, and the need to make every scholarship count, but our coaches/recruiters need to be more responsible for evaluating that talent/desire as well as development. It's a crapshoot on both sides..and with today's specialization and revolving door coaches...Putting even more pressure on these guys seems unhealthy. Even when my cousin was put on scholarship as a RFr in the early 80's, he couldn't take more than 12 credit hours during the season..Imagine trying to finish up or catch up on classes if you had to switch colleges too..On top of learning a new playbook. Even with all the money generated, we need to educate these student athletes ...and realize this is mostly just entertainment
  2. Interesting read..Not new...But new to me. Nebraska's in-state recruiting collapse was worse than you think. Scott Frost won't find a quick fix
  3. So..Win at all costs. Karma? I know you're not talking about injured players...YET...But these guys contribute more than just measurable stats. Karma may not be a real thing, but one of the last things that set us apart from the pros, is that we care more about these athletes than just what they can do for us.
  4. That brings me back to a movie I watched as a Freshman? in highschool...I was shocked that that was ever done, and just assumed it was something that only ''Bad SEC schools'' did. If we got that kind of rep, why would you ever want your kid to play there? ''One on One''
  5. I grew up in a pheasant hunting hotspot (Phelps County). I didn't even know there was a season for turkeys until an old teammate sent out this confusing picture of him sneaking up on one..
  6. My favorite recent article about s/c..
  7. Although I like the idea of trying to help student/athletes, Making the transfer portal even more of a thing makes me wonder if I will still prefer college ball over the NFL.
  8. https://snappshots.com/2020/01/28/the-seven-others/?fbclid=IwAR3vMqCX4_heZXSHLsI8H45wmh8mdA6vIbbSoZILSMmReA960Ikh04Gds04
  9. I'm not saying weeks, but just probably the one most likely to transfer first...His videos look like he throws a ''heavy ball'' Maybe he thinks some time with Mario can help him get to the next level.
  10. Brought me back to my youth. A childhood friend's Dad would sometimes talk like .1. to my Dad by our cars as I was getting home from Football practice or my afterschool job. And I would casually linger, and watch my embarrassed? Dad try to understand what the little fiery guy was actually saying. My dad was some sort of WW2 hero, (My niece found out a couple of years ago, He and his B-29 were 2nd in line to drop the Atom Bomb over Nagasaki...But he'd been raised by some mighty religious parents..He had a violent temper but The worst curse word? I ever heard him say was, ''Dirty Bird!!!''. Sometimes I think my Dad was who Red Foreman (That 70's Show) was based on..I even graduated the same year as the characters from that show. We never talked about what that neighbor said...But sometimes I wish we had. I knew it probably made my Dad uneasy, But one of my biggest regrets was that we didn't joke around with each other more. Tuff Tiger was fun because it was an exercise trying to 'cypher what he was tryin' to say, while also not being embarrassed by other teams' fans thinking we had an accent.
  11. Fewer QB carries and better protection would tend to help..I agree to a point, but...Lots? I can't remember the last time we went a whole season without one of our starting QBs miss games due to injury...(or even anyone we played)...Didn't we have 3 miss probable starts or brought along on road trips as an emergency backup only, this last season? When I first started looking at Logan Smothers' highlight videos, I figured he'd be the most likely QB next year or two to enter the transfer portal..But after looking at some stats...Maybe staying put would more likely work out, even if the QB room appears full. https://www.sbnation.com/2019/9/18/20870625/nfl-panic-index-2019-week-3-quarterback-injuries-drew-brees-cam-newton https://apnews.com/ede0b659a3e2442d9275db16564945e0
  12. interesting..Remembering posters I'd forgotten about..And thoughts of who to hire after Pelini.
  13. It's a long offseason...(We must need moar Bowls).. Wonder if Carl stays at YSU
  14. Now...To waste even moar time trying to find out whether Snyder is a Coach or an Analyst yet...
  15. Dayng!!! I just couldn't resist the temptation to look up Adrian's latest injury status...plus re-read about the one from the Colorado game his Freshman year...I'm guessing the staff believes a partially healthy QB1 is still better than a partially healthy QB2 or QB3.. Are we allowed to discuss players' surgeries anymore? If ever?...Although...Maybe spreading the reps around will help in the long run. (and stop assuming anyone can still play a full season without injury .
  16. My apologies to the board for going this far off topic...I've spent most of my life raising Siberian Huskies, and the more time I spend with actual Wolf Dogs, and witnessing their extreme intelligence..and sweetness. The more the misleading bad stereotypes stick out to me..
  17. Some of my favourite people raise High Content Wolves...In fact, the last time I appeared in a photo, I was holding a wolf cub at a local Bass Pro Shop trying to help acclimate them to people. The last time I got into HB trouble, it was in a ''fun'' ? look alike thread.. I've never been good at recognizing or even noticing a person's race just by looking at them, but there was this lineman from an opposing team with chubby cheeks that I thought looked like my childhood favourite glass lady containing pancake syrup...Took me a week to be able to log in and find out that the lady was ''controversial'' in the South..er sumpthin'...I ended up never eating pancakes again. Speaking of...I still think the people that were up in arms about Roseanne comparing some politician (that I thought looked like her own younger sister if she has one) to a monkey..are the real racists...Because they assume only one race resembles those critters more than others...Like Abe Lincoln and my older brother never existed.
  18. Yeah...Me too. I grew up in small town Nebraska around a bunch of Swedes...Didn't ever experience any sort of racism until the time I moved to Austin, Texas in the early '80's for their really cheap tuition ($4/credit hour).. I guess that lack of experience put me at a disadvantage when I joined HB...I was forced to take vacations twice by the PC police around here because of things I never would have EVER considered to be racist...Really hurt my feelings more than it should and wondered what my parents would have said to me....One of the things they tried to stress to me and my siblings..Part of what made me so proud of them and where I grew up.
  19. I found some hilarious tweets after googling ''Bubba Starling Bo Pelini''...The bolded part was in reference to your use of ''seeing him on national tv'' in which I thought you were referring to the gif above your post showing Bo trying to air out his hat on the ref.
  20. Public perception is harder to defend when everyone sees it...Ribbing from co-workers about what my old school will put up with... is just a nuisance...May be a very slight factor in a job interview if my simple desire of living vicariously through my favourite team makes the HR guy wonder if I would ever condone violence...(Was sometimes in the back of my mind while defending Phillips or Christian Peter). Yeah...I was hoping for some sort of link since I've been away in AZ half of my life...But it's pretty easy to believe after seeing him on national TV. I tried to focus on the ''Entertainment value'' in Bo's tirades, and maybe even loved him for NOT being Callahan. but I also had great concern at his inability to move on to the next play...or even the rest of the game or... season... if he got pissed. I AM surprised he's going to LSU...It will be interesting to see how his hatred of recruiting meshes with Orgeron's love for it, but I still wonder if Bo is near as good a DC without Carl...Having him at DONU instead of Chinander might have helped Scott Frost evolve faster into a complete coach and putting some sort of value in stopping the other team rather than just trying to outscore them, (Something I also felt about Callahan at times)..Hopefully that won't be necessary..
  21. I grew up about 350 miles from KC and ~360 miles from Denver....With roughly the same number of relatives living in either city. Most of our neighborhood sandlot games and the occasional once or twice a year challenge from one of the other three grade schools in town would have everyone show up for games sporting our favourite team's helmets...Except me..By the time I decided to make a career in professional football, Hilsabecks' Sporting Goods store only had some orange helmets in stock, which I later found out represented the Cleveland Browns... That was around the same time that Bob Devaney won his first MNC and I soon became a bandwagon fan of DONU...Listening to Husker games on my transistor radio every Saturday, leaving a mark on at least one of my ears...Writing the scores down for whatever reason after each game. The older kid across the street who loved giving everyone nicknames always called me ''Unitas'' even though I only recall being a QB half the time... I never really followed the NFL...unless a Husker played for them and I personally knew them...I think Strasburger and Novacek were the last two I played with or against (for the lowly Cowboys)...Or maybe Jamie Williams for the 49rs...My cousin who was a year ahead of me in highschool, walked on at UNL, Redshirted, Started 3 years, mainly running in play calls from Osborne.. was drafted by Detroit back when they had a dozen or so rounds, but ended up playing with Gill in the CFL. Who's playing again?
  22. I very vaguely remember back in the '80s, when I had a cousin and some friends scoring TDs for us talking about something similar..Getting envelopes with cash at parties thrown by boosters... And the reports that Johnny Rodgers was considering having his son Terry (Who we offered instead of Barry Sanders?) give back his scholarship, so he could legally pursue a part time job (from JR iirc) so he could afford to take a girl on a date...er something... The NCAA and most schools make so much money off these guys...And if you believe some of these ''COLLEGE FOOTBALL 150'' episodes, They used to think paying coaches or offering scholarships should wipe out their amature status....We've come a long ways since then, but we've also fallen behind in trying to satisfy our collective entertainment itch. Average careers (if any) are usually so short...I do secretly wish there was more done for these players.
