  1. My comment comes from the past few years, with this year being an exception (and we are seeing the problems of not developing our own pitchers). There have been several JUCO players brought in to pitch. My reference is my brother who went to a camp and tried out for the team as a pitcher while Bingham was the pitching coach and was told quote "in the BIG XII we like to have hard throwing pitchers" which admittedly my brother is not, he is a control pitcher. The coach (an assistant who is not there anymore, not Bingham) then proceeded to say that we don't see that in Nebraska and they usually go the JUCO route to fill those needs. They explained that they like to have hard throwing pitchers and do not want to work to much with finesse pitchers and quote "if you can't throw 90-98 on every pitch and we dont want to see your offspead or breaing pitches." This comment astounds me as someone who has coached baseball for years, specifically with pitchers. I have worked with several players, my brother included, and have developed several breaking, and off speed pitchers that are very affective. I have personally always thought that you can have the greatest bullpen pitcher in the world but if they cant pitch to live batters then they have got nothing. You can't really evaluate someones whole abilitiy on a perspective that is so narrow. This all shows to be inability to evaluate talent. As a pitching coach I have seen some great young pitchers come through our system and get miss used (being stuck in the bull pen) and some that I thought weren't worth a lick get thrust into the starting role. I am not going to drop names because they are gone by now. And before a bias is brought up we understood going in that he would be fighting an uphill battle not being a hard thrower (getting in the mid to upper 80s consistently) but we have worked up a very good set of complimentary pitches (a curve with late break, slider, 2 seam fastball with good break, and a slider). I am not looking at everything from a brother perspective but as a pitching coach who cannot believe that an entire pitch set wasn't evaluated. That to me explains some of the issues in recruiting. They admittedly try to fill spots with JUCO players and do not try and develop young pitchers. They simply try and plug spots with players who are throwers, which explains a little of the control problems that we are having (BBs and HBPs) which seem to be somewhat high this year. Several things go into being able to pitch effectively and I believe that the staff now is not doing a very good job of evaluating and improving all those factors, which is why we are seeing so many problems with our staff. The point about the recruiting may have finally changed for the future and I hope it does. But we are now seeing the problems of the past few years in just trying to fill spots. Plugging spots is never good for long term solutions.
  2. 2 problems 1. Dave Bingham is no longer the pitching coach 2. Anderson has done way to much recruiting of JUCO players and not enough developing of their own players. You need to develop your own talent rather then recruit someone elses players in order to have succesfull pitching. Pitching is the one area that you have to have your guys, doing your techniques. If you pull a player who has had 2 years at another school, they are not in your system and it is probably to late to develop them into what you want them to be. I am not bashing JUCO coaches but simply saying a difference in philosophy is the difference between competing in the Big XII and being okay in the Big XII.
  3. Mike Anderson needs to be fired. I have been saying this for the last few years. And this isn't what have you done for me lately type of thinking, if you refer to our past discussion havoc, I brought the stats and figures to PROVE that he has done NOTHING of significance. How can you honestly say that a 10 game losing streak in conference is acceptable. In those 10 games we have been outscored 95 - 31. At this point, Anderson can't even stake claim to acceptable coaching. Isn't he still the hitting coach for the team? If thats the case you can't be outscored by 64 runs (not to mention the 15-0 beat down by Creighton in the midst of the streak) and think that he is still doing an ok job. The argument could be made that we did lose games to teams that are ranked in the top 25, and those can be considered acceptable losses due to talent differences between the two clubs. But that does not justify the run differential in the losses. The closest games we have played during that time frame are two 2 run games, one each to Texas and K-State. I have not been following the team the past week as I have been out of town and away from a computer. Those types of losses do not reflect upon "1 bad inning" being our problem. There are bigger problems on this ball team, and there have been for quite a while now. We have some bright young talent, probably not MLB caliber however, that should be playing at a higher level then this. IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!
  4. Ive said for years that Anderson is a terrible manager and needs to go. He's a good coach, just a terrible manager. For Nebraska baseball to be taken serious we need a change.
  5. It was Josh Davis, who was the #1 I-Back for a brief while when he was here.
  6. I had a friend who used that method a few years ago and it was a pain. The ticket takers, bless their hearts, looked at it like it was written in greek, then had to call their supervisor to find out what they were suppose to do. They ended up sending my friend to a different side of the stadium just to have them looked at. I hope the system has improved in the last few years.
  7. Unfortunately the Arena League is "taking a season off" which doesn't look promising for the future. Which stinks because i actually enjoyed watching that.
  8. I personally would love to see him RS this season, then give him playing time in 2010 to get experience. Then hand him the reigns for three years. My biggest thing is just wanting to see a starting QB the same for 3 years, its been a LONG time since we have had that. I think that just helps consistency of the program.
  9. This is already in the other thread
  10. After all of this character stuff...who brought up the possibility of him teaching the wrong signals? Sounds kind of possible at this point. What a shame
  11. Was hard to hear the tunnel walk last season. We need to make sure the opponents know that Big Red is coming and a can of whup a$$ has been opened. T_O_B I think I remember hearing something about when they redo the East Stadium Balcony with the club seating stuff they are going to try and centralize some speakers. At least I thought i remembered hearing that...maybe I was just dreaming though. ha ha ha
  12. Ill do what I can, looks cool.
  13. Last August I told friends we needed to watch out for Baylor and they just laughed at me. I am sticking by that this game in Waco won't be the walk in the park of years past.
  14. What's a BIL? (Boy I like?) Anyone notice the partial person wearing a limegreen vest behind and to the right of the drum major? (Looks like) West sideline on the 20 yd line toward the North side of the field. Ghosts? Not quite "seamless" photography. On the north 20 yd line, there is a headless band member playing the sax. Somebody should have told the band not to move during the photo op The problem is they took the picture in various stages of pregame. It should have all been taken during the national anthem for the most stillness in the stadium. That said, there are some funny images. I think this is sooooo cool.
  15. Not speaking of these two specifically but this scenario when it comes up. I dont want a premadonna who expects the position handed to him. I want a kid who knows he has to compete for that job week in and week out. Give me someone who is tough as nails and will work their tails off anyday of the week. Heart is huge in football. Just look at the turnaround from 2007 to 2008. Heart is a HUGE difference. If any recruit is mad that they have to fight for a job then don't let the door hit ya on the way out. As far as the coaches being deceptive, didn't they say from the beginning Green is THE QB in the class but Martinez will have a chance to compete? How's that lying to the kid. Just my two cents.
  16. Didn't he play both ways in HS? I thought that went into the rating...how good the player was in general.
  17. Totally found myself. Right near the big 38 on the wall. ha ha ha
  18. You really think Sanchez made this decision without any thought? If you do, I would say you're nuts. Let me clarify, I was referring to PC's advice. I know he had to weigh his options, think about it long and hard before making his decision. I don't blame him for declaring, just saying that I can see both sides. Totally agree. I think PC knows his stuff about the NFL. Wonder what kind of report he'll give to coaches that call and ask about Sanchez.
  19. Didn't a Southern Miss player break his leg in a game in Memorial Stadium? Or maybe that was PITT? Either way it was disgusting to see in person.
  20. I can honestly see Sanchez struggling in the NFL. I don't think he is far enough along to leave, but I dont blame him for going. He needs a solid QB coach in the pros or he will struggle. Think about it though....leave now and be the #2 in a weak QB draft class. Or compete with McCoy, Tebow, and possibly Bradford (who still has 2 years of eligibility i believe). Being the 4th QB taken would be a huge hit in the pocketbook from the 2 spot. Like I said, I don't blame the guy.
  21. Anyone see the porn mustache he was rockin? Yikes...at least he doesn't have the long hair, i just wasn't a fan
  22. Totally agree with the 2010 comment. The recruiting is a beast in college baseball. The NCAA hampers teams with the 35 man roster. THe thing that Anderson could do at UNL is to use the club system to replace those players that bolt early. Some of the best players at UNL are playing club baseball because they are not given a shot to walk on with the main team. I know from personal experience that Anderson rarely acceptys walk-ons. What I believe should happen is the big team should put together a club team of kids that want to play and constantly be evaluating the talent playing in that league. There is a level of arrogance among the baseball team that is shooting themselves in the foot. I am not bashing the players that are there because I think they do get quality guys. The problem, as we learned in football, is sometimes the best talent doesnt pan out...sometimes it takes the biggest heart. Most of these kids are here to get to the next level and God bless them for that but we need a few more players that are here for the University rather then themselves. Not saying we need a whole team...but some role players would be nice. If they would just look around the club teams they would find some outstanding talent that could benefit the big club.
  23. well... Per-GopherSports.com Hey I was simply pointing out it had been a rumor for a LONG time. Im surprised anyone would covet Coz that much. Good luck to them and lets schedule Minnesota sometime soon
