  1. I have a preconceived "issue" with simply hiring guys who used to play for us. The skills required to be a good player are much different than those necessary to be a good coach. Tommie Frazier is the first example that comes to mind. None of our old DBs are seasoned coaches. I'd like to see a guy come in that can make an impact teaching our secondary solid coverage skills while at the same time having good recruiting skills and contacts. Maybe Minter meets that bill, but I don't think we need to solely focus on "our people." I think that's a dangerous thing to do.
  2. You can accuse Obama of lots of things, and be correct. But "idiot" is not one of those things. The guy is really, really smart. That doesn't automatically equate to "great president," but he's certainly not an idiot. The closest thing we've had to an idiot in the presidency, at least in recent memory, is George Bush. The second one.
  3. While the Catholic Church has much to answer for over the course of the last millennium and a half, there are some gross historical inaccuracies in this post. The Catholic Church did not found the Knights Templar. They were founded by a few knights in the Holy Land, and gained favor with the Church some time later. They were not controlled by or beholden to the Church - they were their own separate entity, and never an arm of Catholicism. The Templars weren't back-stabbed by the Church. They grew to a large and powerful organization based on the perception that they were God's Soldiers, blessed by him with the ability to keep the Holy Land safe for pilgrims. When the Holy Land was overrun by the Saracens, the Templars lost much of their clout. They were also heavily involved in usury in Europe to fund their organization, and King Phillip of France ended up owing them more money than he could repay. His solution was to declare them outlaws, seize their castles and absorb their wealth. He persecuted many of them, although it's debatable whether they deserved what they got. The demise of the Knights Templar had far more to do with Philip of France than with the Church. The Catholic Church did not "help start the Dark Ages." The Dark Ages were a period of poverty throughout Europe, and while it is certainly true that the Catholic Church didn't give up its wealth to feed the poor, it is not true that they caused the Dark Ages, unless you believe the Catholic Church could create a mini Ice Age for a couple hundred years, or you believe they had some nefarious reason to do so. Now, could they have made it better? Absolutely. But they did not create it, nor did they sustain it. They profited by it by perpetuating the ignorance of the masses and thus keeping themselves in charge, but the same could be said of most every major and minor royal of the time, too. The fall of Constantinople was as much political as it was a failure of the Catholic Church. The Church was heavily involved in politics at the time, and it is true that the Eastern Orthodoxy was in opposition to that of the West, whose seat was Rome, and this is entirely not in keeping with the teachings of Jesus that the Church claims to follow. Be that as it may, there is simply no historical accuracy to the idea that Muslims "conquered much of eastern Europe." I believe you're speaking of the Mongols, who were an unstoppable force as far as the West was concerned, and had the Mongols chosen to continue pushing West there is little or nothing The Church could have done to stop them. The Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople, but again this is a far more complicated situation than simply stating that The Church didn't help. The Eastern Empire was a shell of its former self, the Western Empire was as devastated by the effects of the Dark Ages and the Black Plague as the East, and it's unlikely, again, that had the western Church wanted to do anything to stop the Turks from conquering Constantinople that they could have. Medieval Europe simply wasn't capable at the time of resisting the Turkish forces as they conquered Constantinople. Again, there's a lot of wrong to discuss with the Church over the years. But if we're going to discuss them, we should be as accurate as is reasonable.
  4. Frank the Tank compiled some numbers for the 2011 season in both football and Men's basketball. We definitely moved up in viewership by joining the B1G. There's a full PDF with lots more data, and some more analysis of the numbers on the blog. LINK
  5. From everything I've read, the Athletic Department has the funds to pay a guy like Zook the kind of money it would take to get him here as an assistant. It'll be interesting to see where we go. I know zip about Minter's ability to coach or recruit. Like a lot of people, I'm concerned with the lack of proven coaching/recruiting already on the staff, so I'm not overly excited about Minter or Warfield. Not against either, just not excited.
  6. Which is why we need to implement kchusker_chris organizational structure designed for the Huskers. Time to do something different. This is a fact of life yet we still run the program like they are going to be here forever...in the end we're just a training ground for coaching talent. We're the Kansas City Royals of coaching. No, we don't run the program like they're going to be here forever. In fact, Bo has more than once stated that he intends to help his assistants continue their careers. I'm not understanding where you're coming from with that statement. EDIT - Saw a Husker Locker blog where the guy said we should go after Ron Zook, name him co-Defensive Coordinator, and hit the ground running in both coaching and recruiting. Interesting idea.
  7. Meant to say "FOR ten years." As in, I doubt he's here five years from now. Sorry about that.
  8. McWilson was recruited by Papuchis, so there's not a great correlation between Raymond leaving and him decommitting. Dixon may leave, but we got Aaron Curry when Kaz came over. So it goes. And there's a lot of time left. Better he left now and took Dixon than at the end of the season. Good point. If Dixon's going to go to LSU, better that happens soon.
  9. I cannot believe there isn't better camera coverage of that wreck. How is every square inch of that track not covered by a camera?
  10. McWilson was recruited by Papuchis, so there's not a great correlation between Raymond leaving and him decommitting. Dixon may leave, but we got Aaron Curry when Kaz came over. So it goes.
  11. Early reports say Fonzie just ran a 4.51 40 at the Combine. Dion Caputi ‏ @nfldraftupdate Nice change of direction + catch from #Nebraska CB Alfonzo Dennard. Keeps a low base. Dion Caputi ‏ @nfldraftupdate #Nebraska CB Alfonzo Dennard was a little stiff earlier but short-area acceleration and movement is real nice. Ideal zone-cover guy.
  12. I think your wish is unlikely to come true. Top-notch coaches are going to be in demand. If we have coaches that other teams don't want, that's a problem. The idea of coaches just staying here forever, or for most of their career, is probably over, too. Most teams don't keep their coaches around this long. The business of coaching has dramatically changed since we had long-term assistants under Osborne. It's doubtful we'll have anything remotely like that ever again. Heck - honest opinion, I doubt Bo is here in ten years.
  13. List of things for which there is no proof that they are real or not real: God Allah Flying Spaghetti Monster Manwë Unicorns G-Spot Nick Saban's integrity The Big Bang Note - list is not all-inclusive.
  14. Yes, I would give it back. But then, I would have told them that I wasn't my twin brother, that he wasn't there (or whatever the deal was) in the first place. Maybe they'd have let him take the shot anyway, and maybe he'd have legitimately won it. It's pretty easy to tell the truth. These guys got it right, even if it did take them a minute to get there. They're good kids, sounds like.
  15. Some things about the avatars that may interest you. They interest me, anyway. The blue color for the Scout Team avatars came from Kenny Bell's scout team jersey in this pic: I cropped the pic down to just the blue jersey, then used PhotoShop's "average" filter to get a good, even blue. I then took the entire pic and used the same filter, and ended up with the gray for the Walk-On team. If anyone else has PhotoShop they should be able to get the same color by using the same filter on this pic. I did a similar trick to get the black for the Blackshirts avatars, as well as the D-Coordinator. That came from a shirt Carl was wearing (but I seem to have lost that pic?). The Coaches avatars are pretty much a copypasta of a section of one of Bo's sweatshirts, from one of last year's games. Didn't do any filtering or altering. The stripes on everyone's "jerseys" are from an OWH pic of Rex. Can't remember which game, though. But I pretty much just copypasta'd the stripes right off his jersey and pasted them into the avatar. The red came from Rex's jersey in that pic as well. So, short story long, all the colors in all the avatars came from actual pics of actual players and coaches.
  16. If the man wants to go home, and leave the "Harvard of football," then let him go. Time for Bo to show us how great that rolodex is. And how deep UNL's pockets are.
  17. A chronically injured Marcel Jones is not an indictment of our whole Offensive Line. Yes, we have O Line problems. Marcel Jones is not the poster-boy of those problems.
  18. Do we have a Niles Paul thread? If so, someone link me to it. Here's Niles showing off his athleticism in a workout.
  19. One of the Lincoln writers was saying Lavonte bulked up to 233 for the Combine, which may have cost him some speed. He played at 225 here at Nebraska.
  20. David's first 40 time was 4.66 If that's correct, that's surprisingly slow. But anyone not drafting him based on his 40 is a fool. Dude is a legit football talent.

Christopherson noted that David bulked up to 233lbs for the Combine, perhaps cutting some speed. Hard to say.

    3. GSG

      GSG

I'd be more interested in his shuttle times. Says he did 19 reps on bench and had 36.5 vert

    4. HuskerFowler

      HuskerFowler

Did a 4.56 on his second try, ranks him around 5-6 for Lbs, pretty darn good.

  21. Here's hoping your good friend is correct.
  22. People support a winner, pretty simple. If the men's team starts winning, they'll get more support. But when the university itself doesn't care, there's no way the fans will. Nebraska is also a Volleyball school, and fan support here is among the best in the nation, with only Hawaii putting more butts in seats over the past decade than us (although look for that to change when the team moves to the Bob). We've had some awesome fan support for baseball when they were playing well, but the last few years have been pretty dismal, and support once again fell off. Football does reign supreme in Nebraska, and that's not likely to ever change. But other sports could make their own noise. As far as the site goes, we've had subforums for other sports (most notably Volleyball), but traffic to those other forum isn't always high, so when we redesigned the board a couple of years ago we axed the individual sports forums. Maybe if/when interest builds we'll bring them back.
  23. Those freshmen are going to be pretty darned good in the next few years. Yori should be able to keep recruiting momentum going with the facilities she's recruiting to, with her resume, and with her track record of winning. The women's team is in pretty good shape right now.
