  1. There is no way the season starts with anyone under center but Lee. That’s a given. Should the guy turn out to be ineffective, however, say through the first four games of the season, how much rope would the coaching staff give him? Would it be time to forget Lee and let Green learn on the job so to speak? I know it seems like Lee has had a good camp, but nothing is certain until games are actually played. Let’s be honest in saying that if he was the clear cut leader among the Qbs all along, he would have gotten into the game against Clemson instead of Witt.
  2. Chadron State beat Northern Colorado a couple years ago...and it wasn't even close. Got to love KU for getting those toughies on the sched!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. I can remember when most of the games were on RADIO ONLY. For people that live in western Nebraska, the pay-per-view option is a vast improvement over no tv at all. Save for the people who live within close driving distance of Lincoln, going to the stadium isn't an option, so $30 to buy the game is reasonable. There was a time when NU was televised against one out-of-conference team and maybe two conference schools. That was prior to the Big 12 days. Imagine those days, three of 10 regular season games televised, plus one bowl game. As it stands now, the Huskers will be televised for six games, not including the Big 12 title game if we can get there. It is hard for me to believe that Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Kansas won't be regular cable options. And there could very well be more pay-per-view options. People can buy pay-per-vew or go to bars so there is actually a chance for fans to see nearly every game NU plays.
  4. That is a common thought outside the program. The thinking is that we should have never been good anyway...or that we were never really good anyway, which is crazed......and, as such, we will never be able to re-attain that kind of glory ever again. Back to that star-based recruit talk, but there are still people who believe those at the top of the rivals recruit board are the best in the nation. We simply aren't up there enough for them to have that opinion of us.
  5. Some people seem to be prone to suffering this injury. Wasn' t there a D-lineman from some years ago that suffered knee injury after knee injury? Can't seem to remember that guy's name.
  6. Upon seeing this thread, I decided to do a little bit of Rivals research and see what kind of pace our recruiting is on now compared to other years. Here is what I found out. If you look at the Big 12 conference standings for recruiting today, Texas stands alone with 19, most of which are four-star guys. Oklahoma is second with 20 commits, half of which are four-star. Then it’s A&M with 20 total and seven of them four-star and Oklahoma State with 15 commits, two of them four-star. Kansas leads the North with 11 commits, one of which is four-star. We have five commits, three of which are four-star. Eight schools have double-digit total recruit totals. We have single digits along with Iowa State, Colorado and Kansas State. If you look at that, it’s time to panic. Now the good news. I took two years and examined when recruits committed. The sample was 2007 and 2009. I threw out 2008 due to the coach change. In 2007 with Bill C firmly in command of the program, the Huskers posted 27 recruits. Six of those guys were committed by this time in 2006. One was added in August, two in September, one in October, four in November and 13 in December or after. So 21 of the 27 were in August or after and the lion’s share in December or after. In 2009, with Bo firmly in command of the program, the Huskers posted 20 recruits. Seven of those guys were committed by this time in 2008. Two were added in August, three in October, one in November and seven in December or after. Over half of the recruits, 13 were added in August or after with the lion’s share in December or after. Looking back further, the Huskers got 16 of 22 commits for the 2006 class in August or after and scored 24 of 32 commits for the 2005 class in August or after. Judging by those numbers, the recruiting process has yet to heat up for the Huskers and will do so in the next few months. Hold judgment until then. We could still be in on some pretty heavy hitting guys.
  7. I am sure Bo would cheer for NU baseball, but they were not at the CWS. Thanks Coach Mike!
  8. You are dead on with pressure being the key. The line can help us do that by making it harder to account for blitzers. I would just love to see teams feel like they had to get at least some help to block Allen in addition to blocking Suh with two guys. Imagine this....Allen goes on an inside rush, crushes that tackle into the middle of the pile and Thenarse comes off the edge right at the QB just as he's taking the snap from center. ROCK!!!!!
  9. Step up the LB and DB play.....how is that going to happen against the spread? Let's see, if the line is blocked, then we can't blitz and get to the QB. If we line up linebackers over WRs in those four and five WR wide open sets, well, then somebody is always going to be open. If the D-line steps up, there won't be as many four and five WR open sets because the offense will have to protect its QB. The math is pretty simple. We have four D-lineman and one LB against their OL plus an LB to spy the running QB out of the spread. The DBs are then man-up against the WRs. It's very hard to run zones when you are spread out all over the field. If our four-man line covers the O-line up front, one LB should have a free run at the QB and the other should be free to pursue the QBs escape angle. If the O-line blocks the front four and puts a body on an LB then the QB has time. If the spy LB gets caught up in traffic and the QB leaves the pocket....well, it could be a huge play.
  10. Suh is a beast. I just want those other guys to take advantage when the attention is on the middle of the line. I am hoping that guy is Allen.
  11. Beach Buff, Funny story. I went to Boulder for the first time a few years ago. All the way to the stadium I was thinking that I might get some rotten treatment, because that was all I was hearing from people. I would say, I am going to Boulder and they would say....look out, they treat NU fans like dirt. Got to say though, I had a great time. No one gave me any grief, outside of the good natured ribbing....God, that red shirt is ugly....kind of thing. But they said it with a smile and everyone laughed. That was before the game. Nebraska won going away, 30-3. You might remember that the CU students threw some bottles and had a "Riot" outside the stadium. Well, after the game a few CU fans told me that they were going to stay for a while and let the traffic die down a bit. We visited. They told me that they thought my team played a good game. When we all got ready to leave, they told me to have a safe trip home. I would go again for sure. And for all the NU fans who say nothing happens in Lincoln. I was there when we played KSU and you could hear people yelling at the QB....a Nebraska kid that was playing in Manhattan, about how he F'N sucked and was no good. Same for Gabbert. Then there was the guy that flew the bird at some busses pulling up to South Stadium and said....Gee, I hope that was the USC team. These things happen. By and large, Nebraska fans are very welcoming and friendly. I try to be. There are jerks though. By the same token, I think a lot of CU fans get a bad rep from a few jackasses. Lastly, I have already made the case for CU and NU as rivals on this site and I think it does exsist, but lets get real, fans are looking for their team to have a good season, not a good game against just one team.
  12. In my eyes, here is how the defense sizes up. Nebraska has returners at DB and safety, but coverage was less than stellar at times last year. The LBs might be talented, but they are young and need a good defensive line to protect them so they can create havoc instead of worrying about shedding blocks all the dang time. The defensive line is centered around Suh, but there are question marks. Who will start opposite Suh and can that guy make an impact? Barry Turner is back from injury, but how quickly will he be a factor? That's why they key to the defense is......Pierre Allen. He really blossomed last year and looks primed to step into the spotlight this year. If he does, the pressure is on the O-Line to find a way to block Suh and keep the defensive end from taking an inside rush right to the QB. A worried line won't be as able to block our linebackers on run plays and blitz pick ups. There will be more pressure on the QB, and, as a result, the DBs will have an easier job. If Allen doesn't step forward, then teams will just double Ducky and the Huskers will have a hard time getting a consistent push against non-cupcakes, making it harder for everyone else to do their jobs. Just my feeling. Any other thoughts?
  13. I think this is a special record because it is a fan thing, not an athlete thing. When we were ranked in the AP every game for only God knows how long, there wasn't a big celebration. The success was a function of the program and athletes, being somewhat superstitious, might have wanted to avoid talking about it for fear that it would jinx the thing. A sell out streak however is contingent on fans continuing to have interest and buy tickets. Giving them a little nod every once and a while tells them that no matter how long the streak goes on, UNL is thankful they still choose to buy the tickets. Every 50 games must sound like a good mark to celebrate. I think we had celebrations at 200 and 250. P.S. And it is about the only streak we have left. Thanks Pedy and Billy C.
  14. Anything to put some pressure on Lee in fall camp. I don't want him to put it in cruise control.
  15. Here is a little something to chew on. Oklahoma, in its hay day, kicked our rears on a regular basis. That game of the century was a thing to behold in large part because we were 7-22 in the previous 29 games with the Sooners. Five of the victories were from 1962 to 1971 Osborne's first win against OU was big beause they had won six straight. From 1979 to 1991 we got beat eight times and won five. Three of those five wins came during the scoring explosion years. We dominated from 1991 to 1997 because OU had fallen off the map. And don't I wish they would have just stayed off the map. Since then we are 1-5 against OU. Colorado owns just as many wins over the Sooners in the same amount of time. Know this... Oklahoma, despite what you might think, does not respect Nebraska. Some of their fans say there is no rivalry with us. They point to the Red River Shoot Out. You are right. Colorado doesn't have our tradition at all. They won one lucky championship. We can certainly say we are better, but history tells us that over the last 20 years we have not been as dominant over CU as we had in the 20 before that. Oh yea, and CU has been to the Big 12 title game more often than us to, which totally sucks. The 70-3 ARSE kicking by Texas kinda makes up for that, but it must be noted that they won the Big 12 title the year that EC won his Heisman. ARRRGGGGHHHHHH
  16. P.S. If all CU had was a lot of smack talk. Nothing else. And was still getting pounded by NU 55-0 year in and year out then it would most definitely not be a rival. I would like that to start soon. Last year was about all I could take. WE SHOULD HAVE KILLED THEM. Why did they come into our house and score two straight early. Why did we let them back in with that stupid fake field goal...oh, yea, I forgot. See above. One more thing to add. About Oklahoma. I know we all just love the other Big Red. They always respected us so much. I love how they attempt to make a grand entrance on our field. I love their Ruff Neks and their stupid fight song. I love Barry Switzer and how he always talked down about us all the time. I just love how Bob Stoops gets hyped as a great coach no matter how many times he loses to Boise State or West Virginia in a bowl game. Wait. No. I HATE OU and all things associated with it. IF they NEVER, EVER WON A GAME OR SCORED A TOUCHDOWN THAT WOULD BE JUST FINE WITH ME. Sorry. Had to get that off my chest. I loath everyone who says how we have respect for OU. Cheap shot bastards. Ask Mickey Joseph. Wait, it hasn't changed, ask Percy Harvin.
  17. One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor. One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect. Check out the scores.....look at the definition of a rival. Now, the coaches might say they don't see this ball game as anything other than the next one on the slate, but I doubt T.O. ever said the Oklahoma game mattered any more than any other either and that one was definitely a rivalry. 1986, lost 20-10 1987, won 24-7 1988, won 7-0 1989, lost 27-21 1990, lost 27-12 1991, tied 19-19 1992, won 52-7 1993, won 21-17 1994, won 24-7 1995, won 44-21 1996, won 17-12 1997, won 27-24 1998, won 16-14 1999, won 33-30 OT 2000, won 34-32 2001, lost 62-36 2002, lost 28-13 2003, won 31-22 2004, lost 26-20 2005, won 30-3 2006, won 37-14 2007, lost 65-51 2008, won 40-31 1980-1985 Huskers won those games by a combined 254-54 Something began to change about this series in 1986. Colorado beat Nebraska, then proceeded to build a 20-plus year history of playing the Huskers close. How many games in this series have come down to a field goal, or a play at the end. Take a snap shot of the years of 1996-2000 and compare it to 1980-85. Nebraska won by a combined 127-112. That's right, roughly two touchdowns or 3 points per year. Rivalries are built over time. They are built on fantastic finishes and nail-biting games. You are right. Nebraska and Colorado isn't a rival just because one person said it. The rivalry isn't because Bill McCartney said so or Colorado fans want it. And it certainly isn't because Sal died or any of the events that surrounded that. I brought those events up because Colorado attempted to use them to make the game with the Huskers a rivalry. It took making history. It took 20 years. Now think of NU vs. OU. Outside of the Crouch-Collins-Stuntz-Crouch play in 2001 there simply hasn't been a lot of NU-OU games that have come down to the wire. Plus....every Husker fan freaks out and gets all defensive about there not being a rivalry. That may be the biggest evidence of all. But, added to that, I have had more Husker fans than I care to mention say, "Man, I hope we beat the stupid Puffs this year." As a Husker fan, I want to win ALL the games. I don't want to win some or just OU or just CU or any other. I always tell them....who freaking cares if we beat CU if we have a 6-5 record. I want to win the Big 12. Hell, I don't even want to "win the north." I want to win the Big 12.....PERIOD. Still, those fans will protest and say...yea, but I really hate Colorado. Case Closed.
  18. I know it is hard for the people on this board to believe, but the Nebraska-Colorado game is a rival game for the Huskers. First off, the two teams face each other every year. Secondly, the two teams have a history going back to the late 1980s that includes mostly tight games and a couple of blow outs in favor of both sides. Plus, just like any rivalry, you can throw out the records. No matter what the records are, the games are tight. What we can talk about is the origin of the rivalry....the relationship that existed back in 1986. Nebraska was a superior team to Colorado. The Buffaloes talked up a rivalry that didn't exist back then and they didn't care how ridiculous the conversation became. Sal was a victim of that era. Tragically he became ill at a very young age and was used as a slogan for a team in its march toward beating Nebraska first and then the national title. What was especially aggravating for Husker fans was that the Colorado team was No. 1 a pretender and No. 2 a slogan making machine that valued smack talk over actual on-the-field performances. When they lost to Nebraska, they always said they were victimized somehow and when they won they conducted themselves in the same classless manner. If you were to walk on to the campus this year and ask about Sal, I feel as though most people would not know what his significance was to the Colorado program. If you walk on to the campus in Lincoln and ask about Brook, you will not only find people who know what his significance is, you will also find a statue outside of North stadium and hear about a citizenship team created in his name. A special effort was not made to make a slogan out of Brook's death back then. T.O. rejected that notion in favor of real long lasting honors. Sal, to my knowledge, is not honored in such ways by CU. Colorado went about it wrong and that's why Nebraska fans rolled their eyes. Sadly, it would not be a surprise at all if the sign disparaging Sal was painted by a CU fan in the first place.
  19. Speed is necessary to win a title. Yes...true. When did we figure this out again.....circa 1985
  20. Here's the scene..... Callahan's first year....we are at home.....against Southern Miss. We have all the momentum, up two scores and the clock winding down in the third Q Instead of letting the clock run out.... Callahan calls a pass play. Dailey throws a pick. Southern Miss gets an instant pick-me-up and goes on to win the game. We were supposed to win that game....dumbest call ever. 2nd place....going to Ames the same year, taking on a horrid run defense and deciding to pass the ball instead. Result, another loss.
  21. The option just wasn't clicking on that night. Our D certainly played well enough, but Scott didn't have the feel of when to keep and when to pitch. Then there were the fumble problems for Green. It seemed like we had a recurring problem with fumbles in the late 90s. Seems like I can remember coaches talking about how they didn't want to over-stress ball security only to have that lead to tentative running by our backs.
  22. Bill isn't here, so we won't have to hear about training camp anymore. He always called fall practices training camp. Which is funny, because it seems that we didn't do much training at all during his tenure at NU.
  23. There was something about the test that made the information less than reliable in court. Do those devices have a failure rate. Maybe the result was so close to being legal that the difference fell within the failure rate for the device.
  24. Yes, the countdown is on to football. 30 days is a big date. Bad news, about double that until the season starts.....sigh
  25. We had to live with this loss for over a decade. And we heard about it everytime Dr. Tom tried to win the title. I remember the intro video to the Orange Bowl the year that we finally won the NC. The script said that Nebraska's story was a repetitive one....time and time again turned away from the national title, just like in 1983. And, when the game got hot late, the broadcasters kept saying....Nebraska has been here before, and lost. We played well back in 1983, but, let's not forget, we should have won that game. That was one of the best NU teams ever. Ask the players and they will tell you that they don't look back on that game and think that the loss was OK. They are still disappointed about it. So am I.
