That's a good way of putting the question. I'd probably take Riley in that situation. Although it was with the Canadian Football League, he's at least won a championship as a head coach, something none of the other three have done. I believe Solich was a few fumbles away from a NC in 99.

That game was such a roller coaster ride of emotions for me. Not once after the kick was missed did I ever think of blaming the loss on Bennett. The opportunity to even have the kick was luck and it just wasn't meant to be. I also agree with Ellis. That miss was actually GOOD for the program.

Or even losing by X amount of points You have no chance in winning a game if it isn't within 10. Being behind by 10 to a team you shouldn't be is a problem not a victory.

I for one don't care how we get our yards/scores. UCLA was the perfect opponent to execute a run first mentality. Due to injury and other reasons, they were horrible at defending the run. If our recruits are better suited to the pass, then we should focus on that. If TA is our QB next year, we have to be a run first offense or we will once again take him out of his comfort zone and set him up for disaster. Having said all of this, I think in the long run we can get more (and better) recruits that fit a power run system than a west coast variant.

Not to be negative but why would anyone in their right mind pick Nebraska? Or even UCLA by less than a couple touchdowns. I hope we do well but hope isn't worth much these days. All indications are that it should be an ugly lopsided victory for the Bruins......unless they just aren't motivated to be there. I completely agree and was of the same opinion in the Michigan State game. I didn't think we had a prayer. Beating UCLA would not surprise me. On the other hand, losing the game wouldn't surprise me either.

If he still has speech issues from prior concussions, it sounds like he is not fully healed. As much as we want him to play (he looked great in the SG), we don't want him to get re-injured. Hopefully this kid heals 100% first, then maybe we can think about him in a real game. As far as the scholarship...I'd rather honor his spot even though it may hurt us. It's the Nebraska way.

Sorry to tell you, but Solich had already achieved mediocrity. Pederson tried to reverse that but he could not. Solich was making moves to correct things. Remember he actually fired the DC & pulled in Pelini to be the DC in 2003. Solich was in the NC game in 2001. Yes, Miami kicked the crap out of NU that year, but this was a '01 Canes team that most consider a top 5 all-time team. Most on this board would put them only behind the '95 & '71 Husker teams. IMO Perlman & Pederson were the direct downfall to NU football. They listened to the talking heads & made the decison that ended the offensive identity to NU football & it has never recovered. ^This times 1 million. Agree. Firing Solich was the biggest mistake ever made in college football. And yet he had trouble finding a job until a MAC school took a chance on him. Guess all those P5 AD's were fools. My memory may be a bit foggy, but I remember several colleges who had interest in Solich who were higher profile than Ohio. Just about every writer and pundit was left scratching their head after the firing... Army was the only one I remember, not a P5 school though, only the uninformed were left scratching Your post does make it sound like Ohio was his only choice which is not accurate... This is exactly the problem. That style of play is incredibly unsafe. It's no use arguing about the impact of concussions, I'm not going to change any minds. Football is by far the most exciting sport in the world, and if you want it to continue you'd better get on board with keeping the players safe. That includes calling a penalty for a hit above the shoulders even if unintentional, calling a foul for hitting a defenseless player, etc. That play Gerry got ejected for against Iowa? Properly called. Need to discourage players from doing that. What else could he have done on that play? Absolutely nothing. Give up the play and move on. Football has moved towards that and it SHOULD continue to move towards that. Keep the game as safe as possible even if you perceive it to be 'watered' down. What Gerry did was not even remotely Chuck Cecil like... So how do you discourage people from doing something that could not have been prevented? You go to make plays and get a penalty as well as kicked out of the game...for what? A play where you could do absolutely nothing differently? I suppose he could not tackle ball carriers or just hesitate enough to let ball carriers go down by themselves? The play was not malicious and trying to cause injury. That in my book should not be flagged or cause an ejection.

Wow, sad thing is this took some time to think about. I didnt agree with the Callahan hire, but solich needed to go. So let's get over that 13 year gripe. Second of all, who really gives a rats behind what offense we run. If a coach came in here and threw the ball 70 times and won a national championship or two no one would care we only ran the ball 10 times a game. Who cares, Just win Sorry don't agree...

If we make a come back and score 33 points to tie it, it's simply because Miami made find mistakes and we still suck. I think that UCLA will have no problem piling up points against NU's D. I think Rosen picks Banker's D apart. The only way NU keeps it close is if the offense keeps scoring with them, like NU did against Michigan State.There's no basis for thinking we'll get blown out. Thinking we'll lose, yes. Right. We hadn't played a game yet with the new staff. We haven't been blown out this year. We could get blown out by UCLA but nothing that has happened this season indicates that will happen. The Miami game was a blowout for 3 quarters, and then they went brain dead, and let NU back in it. Purdue was also a blowout, until NU put up some late points in the 4th quarter. It's a fallacy to say that NU wasn't blown out in any games this year. Until is a pretty important word, eh? The Miami game went to OT. Anyone who says that game was a blow out is a moron. The Miami game WAS a blowout. Penalties and Miami's undisciplined play let us back in the game. To say otherwise is just being delusional. I see that you are accepting that the Purdue game was a blowout.

At least we agree on it being a mistake that we fired Solich. I disagree that NU's path to consistent success lies along the road that MSU has taken. What exactly is our path to consistent success? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say having four different coaches in the past 15 years isn't the correct path. For various reasons, we will not be able to recruit top 10 or probably even top 15 recruiting classes year in and year out. There are several programs that will out recruit us year in and year out. One of the reasons we were able to keep it rolling for so long under TO was because rarely did we lose someone from the staff. We need to pick a staff and stick with them. 100% agree that part of our winning ways were due to the same stable staff. Another was we ran a different style of offense where we were not competing against other schools for the best recruits. We did not need the best QB or receivers. No matter what though, you do need stars on both lines... What ever happened to the local pipeline of O-line talent?

I just watched Alabama convert a 4th and 2 with a roll out play action pass to the flats. Play calling wasn't the issue vs. Iowa. Tommy had Cethan Carter (TE) wide open on the play. Tommy's lack of vision and ability to check down prevented us from converting on that 4th down. He just made a terrible decision and everyone knows it. A good offensive coordinator knows how to put an offense in position to succeed. I wonder if ANY play we needed a yard or two if Cross or Jano would have been a more viable option than ANY pass play?Not with the offensive line we had.That's because the coaches prefer pass protection. Jerald Foster is our best run blocking O-lineman, and he didn't sniff the field.No, they prefer well rounded players that can do it all,not just run block. Foster will see the field next fall though.They prefer guys who are better at pass blocking over run blocking. They also don't rotate because that's their philosophy from their NFL days, not because of any supposed lack of talent.Uncle Milt didn't rotate either. He subbed not anymore than Cav. More players played because we won by bigger margins and the second, third and sometimes the forth string played. What you are claiming is just flat out wrong. Go and watch some of the old big bowl games where the game was not yet decided. You will definitely see more rotation on the O-line than you do today.

Purdue was a blowout, penalties and the O against Iowa were both awful Penalties were ok that were penalities, The Offense was pretty damn good overall. 10 points was a blowout? What did you call all of those games under our former coach??? interesting! Miami blew a 23 point lead against us. We were down to Purdue by 26 points at one point in the game. Let that sink in for a bit... Turnovers are way up FYI. I do like your optimism with this coaching staff though.
