  1. Why would this statement from Riley disqualify Frost from coming to NU as OC? Are you saying Frost couldn't adapt an offense to fit the personnel we have now?
  2. If you were Frost, would you take the Nebraska OC job tomorrow (assuming it is available to him) when it looking like your Ducks will be heading in to the first ever college football finals with a 50:50 shot at getting in the championship game (or better yet winning the whole thing)? I am not saying it would be enough for him not to take the job, but would it give you pause to take it until after your final game (playoff game or championship)? I agree...he has an opportunity within a month or so to win his first championship ring as a coach. I don't see the incentive for him to leave unless its to become a HC somewhere. Also, just a general question...Frost is running an up-tempo pass heavy offense. It definitely is fun to watch and scores a lot of points. Wisconsin also scores a lot of points, with a run-heavy attack. NU has traditionally focused on the run. Would you prefer to model Oregon's system or Wisconsins? As long as we have an offense that scores lots of points, why does it matter what kind of offense we run?
  3. It's unfortunate that this even needs to be said. Huge understatement. Huge.
  4. I prefer a balanced attack on offense. I believe a balanced attack keeps your opponent guessing, he never knows for sure what's coming next. That said, ANY offense when run correctly can be a thing of true beauty. Osborne's power run game in the 90's was awesome to watch as it steamrolled its way to 3 National titles. Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense was frigging incredible. How many times over the years did we hear "Montana to Rice!" Watching a Mike Leach offense pick apart a defenses secondary is pretty fantastic also. I don't get to pick what kind of offense we'll run. In the end, all I really want is to see our team play like they know what they're doing and be competitive. Everything else is gravy. Why couldn't we win with a pro-style offense? We just need the right athletes to run the offense and coaches who can develop and coach. And as Teach says, they need to be boss recruiters also. That part isn't optional, not if you want to compete for hardware. Combine our 2009, 2010, maybe even 2011 and 2013 defenses with our 2008 PRO STYLE offense and we would have won a bunch of games. Exactly. Especially so in 09 and 10. Even a mediocre offense in those two years means we win lots. Our offense was so terrible. /shudder

  6. Let me say that I agree about Warren and Brown...and maybe even Orgeron. However this insistence with Frost at OC has got to end. Yes, he was a great player for us. Yes he is from Nebraska. But let's give the guy a few years with players he has developed himself before we decide he's an excellent coordinator. Let's not forget that Oregon's former offensive coordinator is now the head coach...so how much does Frost really have to do with the offense or the play calling? I'm not sure. I do know that it was clear that Solich wasn't primarily responsible for the Husker offense, and this was evident once Osborne left. And by the way....there is nothing to indicate Frost would leave to make a lateral move just because he's from Nebraska. Solich was never an offensive coordinator. He was the running backs coach for years before being named as assistant head coach. I've read that Frost does indeed call the plays at Oregon and he has input on the game plan each week. Frost is a smart guy and he knows football. Frost has developed players, it's not like he has never been a position coach before.
  7. No, I don't think so. If Bo had the record he had here sans a few of the blowouts and the blowups, and ran the whole show with the same embracing, positive vibe that Tim Miles did or Mike Riley seems to, I think Bo would still be coaching here -- and that's 7 years without a conference championship. Our past two ADs both cited "the way we lost" when referring to on field performance. So if Riley stays true to Riley and produces 7 Bo-like seasons: a few contending teams, no conference titles, and no total trainwrecks -- I think his seat would be heating up, but he probably escapes the axe unless his recruiting is just not up to par. Fair enough... Conversely would this fan base stuck with Riley if he had the same record here like he had at OSU? Honestly, I don't think that is going to happen but if it did, he'd get fired.
  8. This. I voted for Riley. Why? Because I'm a Husker fan and Riley is now a Husker.
  9. From what I read that's a maybe, if he gets offered the OSU HC gig he won't be coming.
  10. I'm as surprised as anyone by this hire but I find the level of angst over this hire kinda silly. The last Oregon State HC to leave with a winning record (prior to Riley who went 93-80 in two stints as HC at OSU) was Tommy Prothro who left in 1964. Apparently winning isn't easy in Corvallis Oregon, but Riley managed it. So we'll see how he does here.
  11. We're entering the crucial "let it go" period, Polo. Everyone lets go in their own time, we don't get to tell others when it's time for them to let go.
  12. I have to ask, why in the world does Tom Osborne need to assist in a coaching search of any kind? This is the Athletic Directors job. So you'd take Eichorst at his word, when TO's probably forgotten more about football than SE can remember... Part of Eichorst's job as AD is the hiring, evaluation and firing of coaches. Name one other University other than Nebraska where former coaches help with coaching searches. And let's not forget that Tom Osborne picked both No Pelini and Frank Solich as head coaches. We can see how well both of those choices worked out. So again, why does TO need to help with a coaching search? If I think about it, makes total sense. TO has the booster's ears, is well respected, can galvanize support from the $$ folks, and SE just fired TO's hire. If SE wants to own this decision, TO is the one guy to keep in the loop. By doing so, TO will feel the dept. is in goods hands and will be the voice of reason with the boosters. Management 101, imo. I say all this as someone who competely agrees with OP. I have NO confidence SE will get this right and I think we are screwed. Unfortunately, I think SE is handling TO very adeptly - keep TO more involved than others but keep most critical info to himself (SE). Except, Osborne has made two pretty bad choices for HC in the past, that doesn't speak well for any choice Osborne may make in the future. Osborne is no longer employed by the university in any fashion so why should he get ANY say in what the University does or doesn't do? Shawn Eichorst already owns the decision to fire Pelini and he will own the decision when he hires a new coach. If we can't trust our AD with hiring decisions then why is he on the University's payroll? Another huge part of the AD's job is dealing boosters. How about we let him do his job w/o putting undo constraints on that job? You know, like having a former employee determine who we hire now. Someday Osborne will no longer be with us, what then? Will you be calling for his return from the grave every time a decision needs to be made in the athletic department? Osborne is retired, how about we let him stay retired and stop living in the past?

  14. It's certainly an experienced staff - with plenty of years at Fresno St, Greeley, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah State, Cal Poly and Arizona State under their belts. But ,only a couple have every spent more than a year or two at a P5 school, another the last 12 years in the NFL. These aren't a bunch of recruiting powerhouses. It's a different game at Nebraska. And it's a world dominated by recruiting. "I spent 14 years in Greeley, Colorado, then another 9 at Wyoming" isn't exactly the line that leads a 4* southern recruit to flock to Nebraska. This guy has some recruiting connections I'm sure, lot of talent here.... With the exception of one year, his freshman season as an Idaho State player, has spent his entire football life on the Front Range, between Denver and Laramie. We're still talking about Jim McElwain right? Reason I ask is that McElwain played for Eastern Washington, coached at Montana St., University of Louisville, MSU, He also coached for the Raiders for one year before going to Fresno St. After that he went to Alabama as Saban's OC. After 3 years at Alabama he was offered his current job at CSU. Last time I checked a map, the only one of those places is between Denver and Laramie. We're talking about the staff that he is going to bring along (hence the quoted response/question of yours). Those 9 guys that actually matter on the recruiting trail...and on Saturdays. The 9 guys that power the ship. He could be the greatest HC out there, but those 9 and the recruits they can bring in are what matter at the end of the day. To be fair, it's the same reason I have concerns about Frost. But at least with Frost he's going searching, not pilfering Oregon. McElwain would likely just transition most of his staff. Well, I have no idea who you were talking about then because you don't mention a single name in that post.

  16. I'd be excited about McElwain, but working for Saban and 1 good season at CSU doesn't constitute "proof" that he is going to be a successful coach here. He might be, he might not. I'd feel a lot better about a few other guys getting us over the hump. And honestly, I'm more interested in the guys he's going to bring with him than the HC himself. Would you feel good with CSU's entire staff? Because you'll likely be getting most of them w/ a change. Anyone cared to look into them? Probably not. But those are they guys you'll all be bitching about a year from now. Hahahaha! Any season in which CSU wins more than they lose is a good season in Fort Collins. *Edit* Why wouldn't we want him to bring his staff with him? That staff just helped him turn around a perpetual loser.
  17. I've seen his wiki pages and read his bios - he's been talked about on here for the last 2 weeks - you're way late to the party. You're insinuating that a 10-2 record at CSU is proof that he can go 12-2 or 13-1 at Nebraska. I'm saying it doesn't prove anything. He's a good coach, probably towards the top of any list I'd put out there, but basing your opinion on his Wiki page isn't a very valid argument to me. All I'm saying is that getting over that hump is difficult. And he's never done that yet either. I'm not insinuating anything of the sort. I'm simply showing his previous record as a coach because that's ALL we have to go on. Whether or not he can take us from where we are now, barely a Top 25 team, to a team competing for championships remains to be seen. However, his record shows him to be a winner and he's worked with good coaches like Nick Saban. Taking a team that went 16-33 in their previous 4 years to a 10-2 record in 3 years is a pretty impressive feat, especially since he did it in Fort Collins.
  18. Bo got us about that far as well, it was that next hump that he couldn't get us over. I have no opinion on McElwain one way or the other - but the only thing he's proven is that he can turn a "loser" football team into a competitive one. For the most part, we've already got one of those. Maybe he gets us 1 more win a year? Or can he get us 2-3? I don't think there's any proof that he can get us 2-3. What constitutes enough proof for you? And you didn't even look at his Wiki page for his accomplishments to date. There simply wasn't enough time between when I posted and you did. No one is going to have to rebuild the Nebraska program from the ground up.
  19. No on all, I would hope that there is surely a better proven coach out there then these 3. McElwain is 4-8, 8-4, 10-2. CSU was 3 - 8 the previous year and 16-33 over the previous 4 years. McElwain took a complete loser football team and turned them into winners in 2 years. He was also an OC under Nick Saban. How much more proof do you require? Here's his Wiki page that details his career.
  20. I wish Bo's teams had been more competitive on the field. I understand that he did the best he knew how. I do appreciate the fact that he ran a clean program and the kids all went to class like they were supposed to. Bo certainly did these things right and more and for that I am grateful.
  21. He would be much further down the list, thats for sure. I agree, he'd be much further down the list. Frost is certainly going to be a HC someday, somewhere, and based on his past performance as a player and a coach I think he'll make a good one.
  22. I have to ask, why in the world does Tom Osborne need to assist in a coaching search of any kind? This is the Athletic Directors job.
  23. Board software told me I was quoting to many quotes. Whatever. I haven't seen anyone attribute Oregon's success to Scott Frost. And it would be pretty dumb to do so considering Oregon was having success before Frost was hired there.
