  1. with all the getting thrown around, I'm kinda surprised Tom Rathman and Gene Huey haven't been mentioned yet. Rathman just re-upped with the new 49er staff. what about Makovicka (iirc he was a grad assistant with Virginia a few years back). maybe i should put another one of these up just in case. though Gene was just let go by he Colts and I don't know what he's up to for 2011
  2. Kind of funny seeing people so shocked about football in March. At least the all star game variety. I had been looking up Huskers who have played in all star/senior games and came across a couple examples of all star games played in the Summer. Coaches All-America Game, 1961-1976: Played in JUNE. apparently the only reason they stopped was because by that time the participants had already joined their NFL clubs. which is what probably also led to the end of... The College All Star Game, 1934-1976: an college all star team vs the winner of the NFL championship. Game was played in July/August. Devaney and the Husker staff coached vs the Cowboys in 1972. Maybe many of you remember this but the whole concept of this type of game isn't even imaginable to me. Why March, I don't know. But its got to be a better start than the "Dixie" game pretending they could have played in the middle of college pbowl season.
  3. I guess that's not surprising. The Texas game seems to have more NFL connections and exposure since the Eastham game is so new. So that's two guys that were in one game but opted for a better one (Allen and now Hagg).
  4. It changed. Eric Hagg and DeJon Gomes will play for Texas in the NFLPA/Texas vs Nation game http://www.texasvsthenation.com/press/news/175-nfl-players-association-game-finalizes-rosters- FWIW, Nathan Enderle will play QB for the Nation. Its not exactly the Senior Bowl but according to their site, "93% of the 2009 roster went on to sign NFL contracts, 111 out of 119". So its not a bad gig. Still no word on who, if any Huskers will be in the Dixie game. Frankly I'm kind of wondering if they'll get enough responses to their invitations to even have a game.
  5. There were several teams that had issues with kickers this year in the NFL. Henery will be drafted, it may be late but a few teams will want his services. The Huskers could potentially have 7+ players drafted. We had 7 in 1999 & 2001 and 8 in 1997. Its been a while since we've had that many prospects.
  6. Actually TO hated Husker tradition. That's why Michael Booker wore #20 in the '90s. Solich and Pelini, too with Josh Bullocks. C'mon folks i know Callahan=the devil for a lot of fans but deliberately un-retiring numbers? don't know. Boomer Brown's number was only retired in 2004, not all that long ago. It was the same year he went into the NFL Hall of fame and that had a lot to do with it. maybe if that is some kind of standard, Will Shields would be a consideration soon. Certainly there are guys that would be deserving of the honor (Frazier?, Suh?, Rimmington?, even Berringer?) but once you start down that path, where do you stop? there are only so many numbers. BTW, I still think Berringer's number should be given to special players, kind of like #12 for A&M. It seemed like 18 was used like that for a few years after '96.
  7. So far.. Senior Bowl: Alex Henery, Roy Helu (Amukamara has been invited and tweeted that Keith Williams, Mike McNeill, and Niles Paul were also invited) http://www.seniorbowl.com/rosters.asp East/West Shrine: Pierre Allen, Mike Smith http://www.shrinegame.com/en/Teams/Watchlist.aspx A new one, something called the Eastham Energy All Star Game (Tempe AZ). Eric Hagg, DJ Jones, Ricky Henry, Joe Moglia will coach (vs Hal Mumme) http://www.easthamallstargame.com/stars.php Another new game, no rosters announced yet. My guess is this may be the first and last game from this one. The people running this one have already shown they weren't very bright when they initially schedule the game for 1/1/11 because there were no other all-star games to contend with. but they apparently forgot about the BOWL GAMES that were still going on. http://s94823118.onlinehome.us/dixiegridironclassic.com/rosters.php Texas vs the Nation (or is it the "NFLPA Game"?)- no rosters yet. http://www.texasvsthenation.com/
  8. Noticed Sam Koch was the top vote-getter for punter in the AFC! About time he got some recognition and I hope he gets to the pro bowl. The guy has been Balimore's Alex Henery as a punter.
  9. Various News Reports from '95-96 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWzkqBbST6c?fs=1&hl=en_US http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aIWEZ73Y4U?fs=1&hl=en_US http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue-2xYgnCes?fs=1&hl=en_US
  10. iirc we would be playing USC if they weren't banned from bowl games. ND, Boise St or USC = this game is very easily sold out days ago. regardless of the bowl game or location. Can't cite washington state for "not taking care of business". really can only blame ourselves for not doing that vs OU.
  11. Jimmy Williams worked as LB coach when Pelini was DC for Solich in 2003. So they are at least somewhat familiar with eachother. Jimmy had a falling out with Turner Gill when he was on the Buffalo staff. "philosophical differences". http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-21693061.html I couldn't find anything on what he may be doing now. No idea if he's even interested in coaching any more if he were to even be considered for the position. That said, I would love to see Doug Colman back at Nebraska.
  12. If its Adidas vs Nike. Adidas all the way. Nike is all name and flash and nothing else. I would love to see flashback uniforms more often but it doesn't matter who's making the jerseys. obiously Adidas will make flashback's if the university asks them to. Personally, I wouldn't mind see this come back I had always remembered the coaches uniforms were from a company called Apex so when I saw your post I had to look it up on Google and came across this: jersey history Its interesting actually. I never knew or noticed that Nebraska players were wearing two different jerseys in the Orange Bowl vs Miami! Also, Russell Athletic may have made the players' unis up through '94 but the coaches wore Apex before that. here's a pic from 1993. And a pic from 1994 with RA on the players and Apex on Osborne: both logos Its really amazing how the company making the jerseys is such a big deal now. just look at this thread! a decade and 1/2 ago the logos were practically hidden.
  13. Translation: "Missouri, please stop calling us. Its getting creepy."
  14. Regardless of how Bo meant it, Jack Arute said basically that very thing on Sirius radio today. Unfortunatly I was only able to listen for a few minutes but from the little that i did catch... Arute, an ABC sideline reporter for years, said something to the effect that it's pretty common for coaches/asst coaches to yell at players like that. that the only real difference here was that Pelini/TMart was caught with a "wide angle lens". at the moment, that question may rank up there with "what is the meaning of life?"
  15. Was listingin to Mike Leach on his Sirius radio show the other day and they were discussing Dennis Erickson getting fined by the Pac 10 for commenting on a bad call (a call the Pac 10 admitted was a bad one btw). Jack Arute asked if he'd been fined or reprimanded while at Tech and Leach went off about a badly called game in which he more or less accused a ref of being a Longhorm homer. I assume it was from the 2007 game vs the 'horns. IIRC Mangino had also been fined for ranting against refs after a game vs Texas. Is it a deliberate conspiracy? Realistically:No I don't think so. (disclaimer: At least not in the regular season, we'll see what awaits us in the championship game should we get there-- see 2009) IMO this league packed with poor refs who also have a Texas/South div bias (be it the longhorns or whoever). The numbers certainly look like that bias has been very kind to whomever happens to be playing us each week. but at the same time, the refs have just been awful in general.
  16. A&M is the only non-Big 8 team i'd "miss". in some way they kind of felt like a fellow Big 8 brethren. If you're still around Aggie, I'm curious to know what you thought of the near-move to the SEC. How did you feel when the rumors were going on at the time and how do you feel about the non-move now? As for us in the Big 10, I was all for it at the time and am still all for it. but i don't think the "last time vs ____" tour that we've done this year will really sink in until next season, or maybe even a couple years from now. No regrets no matter what happens when it finally does sink in though. The program and the school are on much more solid ground now. especially if/when Texas goes independent.
  17. I agree with 1 and 2. I was especially happy because at the time CU's conference switch was like a middle finger to Texas politics talking of replacing them with Baylor. As someone who grew up in Colorado, somehow that seemed a little personal. I still look for them to play us tough like they always have even when they suck (>>2008<<). and a new coach can go a long way in the short term. That said. drudging up the red thing again is pathetic. but i guess what else are they going to do for motivation at this point? Hey coach, you might want to ban purple first.
  18. I think i've only heard/read anything from this guy a select few times but it seems like everytime there's something ridiculous. just a couple off the top of my head-- McCoy > Suh before last year's draft. Forget what's happened so far in their rookie years, that's hindsight and it shouldn't count against McShay. but it was a dumb assertion even at the time. earlier this season, he suggested that at halftime, Nebraska was "struggling" with Washington. Now, I'll give most "draft gurus" the benefit of the doubt because draft expertise is about as an exact science as college football recruiting. but he completely misses the mark even on the obvious! as for the Lions, if Daniel Bullocks had panned out (injury issues too) the Lions would potentially have 4 Huskers starting for them this year. Still, I'm a fan as of 2010-- Go Lions!
  19. What a fantastic drive that was. What ever happened to him though? Did he go to the draft early or something? Early?? he was a juco transfer. he had two years, he played two years. He had been with the Bengals last season but at last check was a free agent in the NFL. I will be nervous no metter who is under center but if TMart plays, I am infinately more comfortable with this game. but the same could be said of the KU game, the CU game, the Big IIX game (fingers crossed) and a bowl game.
  20. while everyone is dancing on CU's grave and pondering the next head coach (IMO Mike Leach would be perfect)... Am I the only one who is always nervous when playing CU? With Hawkins in there at least we knew they sucked. especially on the road. but with a new interim head coach, maybe a bit of a wildcard factor? I just read they are 0-17 on the road. Without looking it up, I assume that includes a road loss from a certain 57-yard FG... In a game that never should have been that close. CU is bad, but so was SD State and Texas. or maybe I'm still just scarred from all the close games from '96-2000 and '08. That said. I feel sorry for some of the 2008 recruits that jumped the Husker ship for the Buffs: Doug Rippy, Josh Williams and especially Bryce Givens.
  21. To be fair to the Rams, Bradford is looking like a pretty good pick. They needed a QB much much more than they needed a DT, and Bradford hasn't done too bad for a rookie QB thrown into an awful situation with really no mentors. Suh on the other hand, screw being the #1 pick. he is in a much better situation than he would have been with the Rams. Having Vanden Bosch and CWilliams on the DLine with him. Its a historically bad franchise showing signs of a Saints-like turnaround in the next couple seasons. Good coaching staff, etc. I don't think Suh could have landed in a better situation. Very happy he's there with two Husker/Lion captains: KVB and Raiola.
  22. Kind of surprised this hasn't come up yet as it usually does in most "I hate Musburger" threads. Broadecast: 1995 vs Oklahoma. BM used the Huskers' offensive performance in that game as an example why Penn State would have won had they played in 1994. again, the 1995 Nebraska offense. serously. PSU losing 3 games in '95 had no bearing on the previous year but Nebraska's 52-points-a-game Tommie Frazier-led O could only put up 23 vs OU (Blackshirts added a couple TDs, 37-0 final). and with that, Brent declared that PSU was the true 1994 MNC. A moronic assertion on so many levels. but typical musburger. Is he anti-Nebraska? No. he's just a douche. They need to clone Keith Jackson.
  23. His head isn't "pointing downwards" so much as his body is leaning forward and his head/neck are inline with the angle of his body. maybe he should have just run at Gabbert with a straightened back. Or better yet, avoid any remote contact with Gabbert's helmet and just go at his legs. That would clearly be a better way to avoid concussions. Of course Gabberts career might be over from a knee injury, but hey, that's not the popular injury of the day anyway. I didn't say that... about the intent to injure part- that was not directed specifically at your comment! after re-reading it does sound that way but was not intended. there was a missouri writer and some message board fans who had suggested CO had an intent to injure Gabbert. which, of course, is ludicrous. Really interesting note here, I'm sorry if this has been posted, i didn't see it yet: http://huskersgameday.com/2010/11/01/mizzous-gary-pinkel-wants-big-12-to-assess-courtney-osborne-hit-on-blaine-gabbert/ Check out the 2007 video (not 2009 as noted in the story) in which our good buddy Cunningham rails against a mizzou player for a hit that was launching/helmet crown. For the record, IMO this was definately a penalty, but an expulsion? c'mon. I think of Oregon's Blount when I think of acts that deserve expulsion/suspension. not this, as dirty as it may look in the video its what the personal foul penalty is intended for. Cunningham's crusade against aggressive tackling is apparnetly nothing new.

  25. Random thoughts... *Osborne should be suspended..... for his helmet to helmet hit on Dennard! this suspension is made even more obvious by the fact that Dennard sustained a concussion which clearly shows there was an intent to injure. Osborne is just a head hunting punk! *It was a "flagrant" fumble. Does that get reviewed? *How is it Mizzou finds a way to whine about a hit on their QB for a 2nd year in a row when it was OUR guy who got knocked out for half the game? *Their DL went at TMart's legs when he was taken out-- it was a blatent intent to injure i tell you!! *Good thing Asante graduated before this year. He'd have missed most of the season. *Good thing Suh graduated before this year, too. Pefect target for the Big 12's little anti-tackle-football campaign. *Who does the Big 12 target next? Allen? Crick? David? Prince? Burkhead?
