  1. As a side note with some correlation to NU: Charlie Strong is having a disastrous season at Texas. His defense is on the field 35 minutes a game, and they are getting trounced. However, that is a defense that will be tough next year because of this... experience is never a bad thing.
  2. No Not ten years Even if 1 year.... very slight no. The dude could not continue to be the face of the program at NEBRASKA
  3. Pelini's 2009 defense was one of the best ever at NU. Better than the Alabama defense of the same year. Bo was inflexible and dogmatic. There were no adjustments. Brutal D when you have the guys to man up. Exposed when you dont. But if the guys rose up like they did in 2008, 2009 that was a defense that would go out and win you the game including scoring for you when the offense couldnt.
  4. I remember some games the Callahan crew would put together a masterful show of plan and play calling, then other weeks it was like a 3 hour purgatory.
  5. After the hire I posted that coaching changes usually result in a not so good record first year. Several members here emphatically stated that I was wrong and 10 wins should be expected based on the schedule. Where are those guys now?
  6. Riley is a good coach. His system is not going to work at NU. The secondary coaches need fired if we dont start covering receivers. Put Riley at QB coach for the Chargers or simething and let him have a happy bon voyage
  7. Try this on for size: we are going to have to steal one W just to make it into the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.
  8. Thats optimistic. This will be closer: Illinois - W 38-27 Wisconsin - L 35-24 Minnesota - L 42-36 Northwestern - L 42-24 Purdue - W 31-17 Michigan St L 56-28 Rutgers - W 38-24 Iowa - L. 41-31
  9. I've often wondered about Illinois. Some years in the past they haven't been too bad, many times not that good. I agree with the poster above about lather rinse repeat. One of the most intelligent (but not perfect... sorry bud) friends I have had was schooling me on a video football game. He said when something isn't working, keep trying something different.
  10. I saw the stadium clear full of Red today to watch a 1-2 team play Souther Miss and my initial thought was that there is definitely not much to do around Lincoln this time of year.
  11. Harbaugh has done a better job to date. Michigan was clearly organized and on a singular mission today soundly beating the team that beat us. Michigan is looking like Michigan again. Adding that Harbaugh is a good fit there, much better fit than Riley is here. Riley doesnt have Nebraska playing Nebraska football. Not even close.
  12. As much as I dont like this style of football, I cant deny the fact that Riley is a very good coach. You dont get to be HC of the Chargers, envied by USC, and win the Grey cup unless you know your stuff. I wonder why teams like ours dont open the doors to some younger hungrier assistants.(looking at Banker, and the O line coach. When PSU got good again ad JOPA got into his last few years, wasnt it some fresh faces adding some juice?
  13. Diehard husker fan but for some reason I am really into this BYU Michigan game. Metrics say BYU by the widest margin of any of the ESPen college pick em games this week, but UM with that 14 ranked Scoring D at home pounding the rock. We will see what kind of guts BYU has and vise versa.
  14. Riley has already made this his program. I remember watching OSU get drubbed by good Pac 12 teams. I remember watching the 20 yd outs chucked in vain on 3rd and 12 many times when he was there. He didnt have an NFL QB there at the time, and he doesnt have one here now. But Riley isnt the problem in its entirety. Absolutely husker fans should be worried. There is a generation of adults now whos only recollection of Husker greatness is the 2001 NC game with the U. Thats scary. Its been too long this program has been languishing. The fans will lose interest. The leadership at Nebraska cant seem to understand that Coaches arent plug and play. You've got to get the right fit. Rodriguez at UM didnt work. Harbaugh will work. Meyer at THE OSU will work. Riley at NU will not work. The coach has to fit into the identity of the program. You are what you are. What are the Cornhuskers of Lincoln? This is a team at a University with high academic and character values instilled by past coaches and staff. Not many NCAA violations. Lots of Academic AA. Good enough for the Big 10. We do it the right way. This school and town could never attract a 3 deep stable of studs from Alabama, Texas, and Florida to run the Offense of the Rileys, Callahans, of the world. When you try that here with 3 star dudes, the team runs into a buzz saw of better talent. It takes your team 3 months to figure out the playbook, but it takes the other team 3 days. And the fans (money) dont respect it. It doesnt look like Devaney and Tom did it. The last few years playing Wisconsins running attack and crowding defense I have to admit they looked more like Huskers than we did (Alvarez). I dont know what abomination that Martinez Beck offense was. Nebraska football will rise again when we get the guy who understands that here at NU we need to recruit guys for OUR system that really want to be huskers period. He needs to understand that at Lincoln you do this by emphasizing power running, play action pass and some type of option (read option, or other) out of multiple sets. Now that we are in the Big 14 I dont know that a speedy 43 is the answer but the Key is UNRELENTING RUN FIRST DEFENSE. When we get a coach that understands this to the core, NU will return to national prominence. There was a metaphorical great book of football knowledge in the football offices at Nebraska. In it were the keys to domination at NU. Emblazoned on its large leatherbound cover were 5 national titles. Callahan tossed that book in the trash and no one has bothered to look for it since.
  15. Frank Beemer made a name for himself and VT football by caring very much about special teams. Thursday nights you could watch as VT flipped the field, blocked a punt, and the crowd went insane.
  16. During our last couple years in the Big 12 I was watching the Big 10. It was obvious to me at that point that the Big 10 was a meat grinder. Week in, week out it was a grind. And I thought that at least our team doesnt have to deal with that. Now that we do, I can see why the Conf title is so elusive. You have to be UP for a physical game every week. It wears on a team.
  17. You go stand beside them when that happens and call them liars, I want to see that. If it was Ditka against the 95 Huskers on a nuetral field. I'd take NU by one. But I gotta go theres a sausage lodged in my heart.
  18. Interesting, so when the 95 team comes onto the new turf with their children is it wrong to tell them "I won all my games for 3 years on THIS field"?
  19. Yeah lets not compare... Its not like they wear the same red N on the hat or play on the same field or anything.
  20. This is a youtube link to watch if you want a reminder of what NU football should look like. For you under 25 crowd the voice you hear is Keith Jackson. A great iconic announcer from a time when a catch was a catch, and we had the safeties enforcing the middle to sort that kind of thing out instead of replay. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d98gjoLv-m0 Riley knows this kind of football but his heart isnt in it.
  21. Switch coaching staffs with THE OSU and we would be talking about at least one possible heisman candidate. There is enough talent here that Urban and Co would win at least ten.
  22. Here is the real problem. Nebraska has strayed from real Nebraska football. A west coast offense coach is never gonna come in here and restore the dominance. Never gonna happen. You cant grow 275 bushel corn on a sand dune. And you can't grow a top of the universe pass happy world beater in Lincoln NE. You CAN come up with big beefy country boys who can pancake block. You CAN come up with awesome option quarterbacks like the Cardale Jones's, JT Barrets of the world who nobody else wants. You CAN commit to the walk ons and create a great team. You CANT outcompete 35 other teams we all could name for the next pro prospect. You can go get the kids who would die to be a Husker. Are there any of those left?
