Los Angeles, CA -- A camera phone captured a UCLA student being shocked with a stun gun by a police officer after he allegedly refused repeated requests to show his student identification and would not leave a campus library, university police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday after police did a routine check of student identifications at the University of California, Los Angeles' Powell Library computer lab.

"This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours," said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

She said police tried to escort Mostafa Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide ID and would not leave.

Tabatabainejad, who was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer, was later released on his own recognizance.

"As the officers attempted to escort him out, he went limp and continued to refuse to cooperate with officers or leave the building," Greenstein said.

Instead, Greenstein said, Tabatabainejad encouraged others at the library to join his resistance. When a crowd began to gather they used the stun gun on him.

The arrest was recorded on another student's camera phone and showed Tabatabainejad screaming while on the floor of the computer lab. The video also showed the student shouting, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your ... abuse of power," according to the campus newspaper, the Daily Bruin.

There is no phone listing for Tabatabainejad and neither he nor his attorney could be located for comment.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams promised that an investigation of the incident and the officer's action will be "thorough, vigorous and fair."

"The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to me," Abrams said in a statement.

I love my little yellow X26 Taser. You pull that sucker out and they will either comply or ride the lightning for 8 seconds! Either way it's a win/win situation! :) I did laugh at some of the comments that were posted on Youtube. Especially the one about the "guy not being able to control his muscles after they engaged the Taser. I have personally been hit with one, yes it takes you down but the moment the zapping stops you are able to move around. The thing that get's me about people that have no understanding about Police work is the minute a Officer steps in to do his job it's abuse! This moron was cleary in violation of some type of trespassing, disorderly conduct, or college rule being broken. So the Officer's stepped in and did what they were supposed to do. Restore order with the minimum amount of force necessary to effect the arrest. Isn't Police work just grand???!!!! You know what they say about public servants....Everyone loves to see a fireman but hates to see a Cop!

dude....society better be glad I'm not a cop

I have a totally different view on keeping order in my city. I think most cops are way too soft on criminals. Someone runs from me or spits in my face....I'll f'ing' deck the guy and keep beating on him like there's no tomorrow. He molests/rapes a child or a woman...I'll f'ing pull out my gun and shoot him in the leg/arm/balls.

I got your judge, jury and executioner right here, buddy.

I saw this on a couple of news channels the other night. Interesting that both had an entirely different take on the subect. Both interviewed students who were in the library when this event happened. Both students said that the student who got tasered was asked to leave. He said that he would, but he just had to pack up his books. Immediatley he was tasered. He was then asked to leave again, but could not (HE JUST GOT TASERED)! The police just kept on tasering him over and over again (4 times while handcuffed), while the kid screamed "what did I do?"," I am not resisting!", and "I have a medical condition". Other students in the library were yelling at the guards to stop. In doing so, the police threatened to taser them as well.

Here is the link to the video on you tube. Judge for yourselves......

If anybody on this board believes this to be appropriate use of power or even in the vacinity of funny, you really need help.

Wow! Here's to the U.S. Constitution and to Habeas Corpus. Is this a "Judge Dredd" reenactment or a "Boyz in the Hood" reenactment?

That maybe true but you heard the kid say over and over don't touch me. To me that is resisting. In fact most Police Dept policies state that a Taser is just like placing your hands on some one. What I mean by that is, you ask the person nicely ONCE. In most Use Of Force Continuuims....First is Verbal commands, Second is hands on i.e the Taser. Also.....there are facts that back up the use of a Taser that has lessened the amount of injuries not only to Police Officers but to SUSPECTS as well. Here is the model that I am talking about.

We only viewed the aftermath of what happened. We never viewed the steps which led up to the Taser. By his screaming "don't f'ing touch me" would deem the kid to be displaying a "Passive Resistant" manner. Therefore, control/restraints come into play. Also, most kids these days despise the Cops for one reason or another. You interview just about anyone that views Police Officer arrest where resistance is displayed, and 9 times out of 10 you will hear that the "Police caused it all". I try to go by the code when I work that "You cause my actions". In other words if I have to take "you" down, it is because "you" caused me to do so. That is your Use of Force lesson for the day. There are also factors that we didn't see. Was the guy "tweaking" or intoxicated? I have personally got into a sh#t storm with people on Meth and they can be down right out of control at times. So, we only see bits and pieces of the entire incident. Don't worry there will not be a quiz afterwards!

See that's the problems these days with people. They are quick to blame the police and don't know all of the facts leading up to it. I'm not saying that some police officers get out of control sometimes because they do. However, people need to wait and no all the facts of the incident before they pass judgement. Good graph there Blackshirtsguru, took me back to the police academy!!!!

My responses where a direct response to posters on this board. Guru, you said "We only viewed the aftermath of what happened. We never viewed the steps which led up to the Taser" ........exactly! We don't know the whole story we were not there. People were very quick to judge the student as well. Here are some of the comments:

"Sounds like your typical anti-government, anti-police moron"

" This moron was cleary in violation of some type of trespassing"

"I got your judge, jury and executioner right here, buddy"

You also said "most kids these days despise the Cops for one reason or another". Maybe the police should be asking themselves why. People respect actions, not uniforms. People do not respect 4 officers tasering a student 4 times while he is already in restraints.

Oh please.....I am not going to look at myself and the mirror and ask myself why people hate me because of my profession. To be honest, I could give two sh#ts what other's thought of me. Just because a person is in restraints does not save him from being "dry stunned". Again people do not know the laws regarding Official Opression and Unlawful Restraint. He was not complying, he was being Tased....End of Story!!!!!!
