What's the point? Everyone bitched when Callahan burned redshirts. Just let them be. We need to see the big picture, not just the here-and-now. Quote Link to comment

huskersals24
doesn't their progress go toward the bigger picture? i'm not saying put them on the field...i simply asked what the word on them was. and not everyone bitched. Quote Link to comment
Red Storm Brewing
I saw Mason Wald completely lay out a Hokie TE on the kickoff after Swift's return and then take on said TE and another Hokie twice his size in a little in your face shoving match and loved every second of it. Also recall a touchback against New Mexico St. where only one Aggie was on his back with Mason standing over him. Seriously watch this kid sometime on a kickoff, it is worth the burnt redshirt. Pedro Guerrero
For the people saying lets be patient with the Frosh, I ask did you watch Alabama? They have no problem playing them. As far as the big picture goes wouldn't it help if more of the guys that are the "future" go to play if the "here and now" guys don't cut it. Look at Miami they play so many Frosh and sure they are going to take their lumps this year but I'm telling you in 2 year they are going to be money. Stoops, Carroll, Meyer, Saban, Miles, Tressel, Richt, don't have problems playing the young guys so why should we? Quote Link to comment

I don't remember anybody bitching when he burned redshirts, because he rarely did except for special teams. I don't think that is what he was referring to. I remember people bitching that the offense was too difficult and freshman couldn't grasp it in time to see the field right away. If Pete Carroll, Mack Brownl, Bob Stoops, Nick Saben, Urban Meyer, and Les Miles think it works, I don't see what they problem is with it. Quote Link to comment

zoogs
Fisher has seen PT. Baker's in line for a redshirt, and I'd say PJ Smith just isn't ready to play - Pelini's staff reportedly told safety visitors this past week that they wouldn't be coming here to redshirt just because we're so short of depth. Their recruits are more developed by the nature of the caliber of player they are. Every school you mentioned has a bunch of Blue Chip kids who are farther along than the typical recruit (the likes of which NU gets). Simply put, we do not land enough recruits who are capable of playing as freshman --- the top programs do. Quote Link to comment

Pedro Guerrero
Fisher has seen PT. thanks for answering my original question. He hasn't play since the first game and that was only on kickoff coverage. So he really hasn't seen any good PT. Quote Link to comment

Lets take a look at those programs, they are all in, or near, the top 10 and fighting for a national title. They play freshmen because they have a chance to win it all this year. In 3-4 years if we get back on track and are in the top 10 and bringing in top 10 recruiting classes like those you mentioned above, you will see more true freshman playing. Until then there really isn't a reason to. With that said, Wald has been a wild man on special teams, and Dennard has really impressed me with his blocking on kickoff returns, he guided Paul to his return for TD and seems to get after it even if he doesn't receive the kick. These freshmen will have a year of good coaching under their belts, and will be hungry to rip someone's head off next year. Bo knows we aren't a top 25 team this year, so why not build for the future? Quote Link to comment
